Assessment of the microbiological quality and wash treatments of lettuce served in University restaurants

Abstract One hundred and forty-four samples of lettuce from 16 University restaurants were analyzed. The mesophilic aerobic counts of all samples ranged from 3.01 to 7.81 log 10 CFU g −1 . Results of total coliforms ranged from 3.38 log 10 most probable number (MPN) g −1 . Of the lettuce samples, 25.7% harbored Escherichia coli , 22.9% Staphylococcus aureus and 84% group D streptococci. Similarly, 10.4% of the samples harbored Aeromonas hydrophila , 2.8% Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and coliforms such as 14.6% Citrobacter freundii , 8.3% Klebsiella pneumoniae , 4.2% Enterobacter cloacae and 1.4% Providencia spp. Salmonella , Shigella and E. coli O157:H7 were not detected. A novel heterobimetallic system, 1∞[LCuIICoII(NCS)2] (1), was obtained by reacting the neutral mononuclear complex [LCu] with cobalt(II) acetate in the presence of potassium thiocyanate (L is the dianion of the Schiff base resulting from the 2 ∶ 1 condensation of 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde with 1,3-propanediamine). The crystallographic investigation of 1 reveals a one-dimensional alternating zig-zag chain-like structure, made of dinuclear {LCuCo} units linked by thiocyanate bridges. The copper(II) ion is pentacoordinate to the N2O2 donor set of the Schiff base ligand in the basal plane, with the apical position occupied by the sulfur atom. : The topical antiandrogenic activity of potassium canrenoate (CAK), compared with that of spironolactone (SP), was assayed in vivo in female golden Syrian hamsters whose flank organs were stimulated by subcutaneous administration of testosterone propionate. Sebaceous glands and hair were measured by a computerized image analyzer. Pigmented spots, sebaceous gland areas, and the diameter of hairs of the treated flank organs were smaller in the groups that received CAK (1·6 mg/day) and SP (0·4 mg/day). Potassium availability affects drought responses in plants through several metabolic roles, among which stomatal regulation, cell growth and xylem hydraulics. Vitis vinifera L. is a highly valuable crop and several genotypes have been selected during its millennial cultivation. Plant xylem hydraulic conductance varies with changes in sap solute concentrations, particularly potassium, a phenomenon known as 'ionic effect'. In well-watered Laurus nobilis plants, short term potassium fertilization increased xylem sap potassium concentration, resulting in an increase in plant hydraulic conductance (Kplant), leaf-specific conductivity of the shoot (kshoot) and transpiration rate (Eplant).
