Influence of Foot Type on the Clinical Outcome of Minimally Invasive Surgery for Metatarsalgia. A Prospective Pilot Study

2021

Background and aims: Surgical procedures for central metatarsalgia seek to harmonise the metatarsal parabola with osteotomies that can be performed by minimally invasive techniques. However, the possible relationship of the foot type and the mid-term postoperative outcome is poorly described. The objective of this prospective pilot study was therefore to determine whether the foot type (pronate, neutral, or supinate) conditions the postoperative mid-term functional outcome. Methods: A series of 28 patients (6 men, 22 women) were treated for primary central metatarsalgia by means of minimally invasive distal metaphyseal osteotomy (DMMO).Results: Their functional outcomes at 6 and 12 months we…

Chimeric Free Vascularized Metatarsophalangeal Joint With Toe Fillet Flap: A Technique for Reconstruction of the Posttraumatic Metacarpophalangeal Jo…

2018

For painful, dysfunctional, posttraumatic metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints, the free vascularized toe joint transfer may represent a good solution. Successful reconstruction is potentially limited, however, by 2 features of the traditional vascularized metatarsophalangeal (MTP) transfer: inadequate arc of flexion and insufficient soft tissue coverage. The solution to both of these dilemmas lies in the manner of utilizing the donor site. Because of its innate hyperextensibility, rotating the MTP 180° volar to dorsal provides the greatest arc of flexion in the reconstructed MCP. Excellent soft tissue coverage can be provided by elevating the skin paddle of the transferred second toe as a chim…

Effectiveness and Duration of Plantar Pressure Off-loading by Two Designs of Felt Padding: A Preliminary Study.

2019

Background: The aim of this study was to observe the pressure changes in the felt padding used to off-load pressure from the first metatarsal head, the effects obtained by different designs, and the loss of effectiveness over time. Method: With a study population of 17 persons, two types of 5-mm semicompressed felt padding were tested: one was C-shaped, with an aperture cutout at the first metatarsophalangeal joint, and the other was U-shaped. Pressures on the sole of the foot were evaluated with a platform pressure measurement system at three time points: before fitting the felt padding, immediately afterward, and 3 days later. Results: In terms of decreased mean pressure on the first met…

Autonomiczna Republika Krymu: pogranicze ukraińsko-rosyjskie

2014

2017

W niniejszym artykule zostaje wprowadzone do obiegu naukowego nowe źródło do badań nad historią armii litewskiej w okresie wielkiej wojny północnej (1700–1721), którym jest projekt komputu z 1703 r. Znajduje się on w Bibliotece Kórnickiej Polskiej Akademii Nauk w rękopisie o sygnaturze 985. W inwentarzu rękopisów biblioteki widnieje natomiast jako komput z 1706 r. Trudno jednak ustalić faktyczną datę jego powstania. Możliwe jest jedynie oszacowanie pewnych cezur. Sporządzony został na pewno przed 27 listopada 1703 r. (wprowadzenie w życie postanowień rady senatu w Jaworowie o pozbawieniu urzędów Sapiehów). Natomiast prawdopodobnie powstał przed lub w trakcie sejmu lubelskiego (11 czerwca – …

Na Ujbackim stepie... Kreacje Tatarów w poematach Tomasza Augusta Olizarowskiego

2016

The article presents literary images of Tatars, which can be found in two poetic novels by the forgotten Romantic author, Tomasz August Olizarowski (1811-1879). The first of them, printed in 1836, is Krzyż w Peredylu. Pieśń wołyńska (The Cross in Peredil. A Volhynian Song), published for the second time in a revised version as Topir-Góra. Powieść wołyńska. Wedle miejscowego podania (Topir-Mountain. A Volhynian Novel. According to a Local Folk Tale). The second one, which in its title already refers to the Tatars, is Car-dziewica. Powieść tatarska (The Virgin-Tsar. A Tatar Novel), written in 1866. In Krzyż w Peredylu and in Topir-Góra, the poet shows Tatar people as representatives of the no…

Radiographic Outcomes of Hallux Valgus Deformity Correction With Chevron and Scarf Osteotomies

2023

There is no gold standard in the treatment of hallux valgus deformity. The purpose of our study was to compare various aspects of radiographic assessment following scarf and chevron osteotomies and try to determine which technique helps achieve a more pronounced intermetatarsal angle (IMA) and hallux valgus angle (HVA) correction and produces lower rates of complications, including adjacent-joint arthritis. This study included patients who underwent hallux valgus correction with the scarf (n = 32) or chevron (n = 181) method with a follow-up period of over 3 years. We evaluated the following parameters: HVA, IMA, duration of hospital stay, complications, development of adjacent-joint arthri…

Stress fractures in elite male football players

2010

The objective was to investigate the incidence, type and distribution of stress fractures in professional male football players. Fifty-four football teams, comprising 2379 players, were followed prospectively for 189 team seasons during the years 2001-2009. Team medical staff recorded individual player exposure and time-loss injuries. The first team squads of 24 clubs selected by UEFA as belonging to the 50 best European teams, 15 teams of the Swedish Super League and 15 teams playing their home matches on artificial turf pitches were included. In total, 51 stress fractures occurred during 1,180,000 h of exposure, giving an injury incidence of 0.04 injuries/1000 h. A team of 25 players can …

Osteosarcoma of the Trapezium

2021

Osteogenic sarcoma is a malignant tumor that rarely affects the hand. When it does, it most often involves the phalanges or metacarpal heads. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman with a low-grade osteosarcoma affecting the trapezium bone of her left hand. A total trapeziectomy with partial removal of the first metatarsal, scaphoid, trapezoid, and capitate bones was performed, and no adjuvant therapy was administered. Six years after the intervention, the patient is disease-free, with excellent functionality and yearly imaging tests showing no signs of recurrence.
