Garibaldi popolare. Politiche novecentesche dell’icona risorgimentale
2019
«Hero of the People». Political uses of Garibaldi’s image in the XXth century · Garibaldi epitomizes Italian Risorgimento also on an iconographical level. With particular reference to Sicily in the XXth century, the article aims at analyzing first some aspects of an often thaumaturgic Garibaldi’s figure within subaltern culture, chiefly through handcratfs, political tattoos, painted scenes pertaining to traditional puppet theatre as well as to ornate carts. All these contexts show a dense circulation between ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture. Poetics of the "savage" : practice of tattooing in the modern world
2012
Ancient as it may be the popularity for tattoo does not seem to wane in the West. Indeed, we can find a great number of tattoo studios, exhibitions or magazines in our cities. The iconography of the brand seems to be the result of an amazing syncretism of which the "wild" imagery is an important part. Maori tattoos, Arabic calligraphy, dragons and wild animals, not from Western culture, are indeed very popular patterns. True mode of expressions of the skin, the ethnic tattoo indicates a certain view of the world, a view of the Other, as the path one chooses to follow in order to search for a "sense of self". Since the cabinets of curiosities of the sixteenth century, the Western world colle…
Clinicopathological and Immunohistochemical Study of Oral Amalgam Pigmentation
2012
Amalgam tattoo, the most common exogenous oral pigmentation, can sometimes be confused with melanotic lesions, being then biopsied. We present the clinicopathological characteristics of 6 biopsied cases (5 females and 1 male) of oral amalgam pigmentation. The most common location was the gingival mucosa, followed by the buccal and palatal mucosa. Morphology and distribution (stromal, perivascular, perineural, endomysial) of pigmentation was variable; there was only 1 case with fibrous capsular reaction and likewise only a single case of granulomatous foreign body reaction. Morphological variability is conditioned by the timing and amount of the pigment deposit, which is often associated wit…

La Parola di Dio iscritta sulla pelle nella prassi artistica post-concettuale di Douglas Gordon
2021
The paper offers an analysis of how tattoos, although they only very recently established a niche of their own in contemporary art, became an important medium of religious art, particularly for Christianity. A central character is identified in Scottish artist Douglas Gordon, a celebrity of todays art world, who addressed the relationship with the Word of God already in his early works. Indeed, Gordon's tattoos are textual and inscribe the body with words. Penance and faith, possession and salvation are at the center of his creativity and find tattoos to be a convenient vehicle to confer a newly rediscovered sacred dimension to the body. In Gordons works the inscription acquires a religious…

Epidemiology of tattoo skin disease in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from the Sado estuary, Portugal
2003
We report on the epidemiology of tattoo disease in a community of bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from the Sado estuary, Portugal. The presence of tattoos (T++) and tattoo-like (T+) lesions was examined in 586 photographic records of 35 dolphins taken from 1994 to 1997. Images were rated into 3 categories: good (GI), average (AI) and poor (PI). Dolphins positive for T++ lesions were observed in 19 GI. Dolphins with T+ lesions were seen in 39 GI, 23 AI and 6 PI. For statistical analysis the dolphins were divided into 2 age classes (immature and adult) and the data grouped into 2 periods (1994-1995 and 1996-1997). Minimum prevalence of T++ lesions in 32 dolphins was 21.9% in 1994-1995 …
