Paysandisia archon: Taxonomy, distribution, biology and life cycle
2017
The taxonomic position of the family Castniidae within the order Lepidoptera has changed over time. Initially, it was classified in the superfamily Sesioidea, and then it was grouped in a large assemblage including the Cossoidea, Sesioidea, and Zygaenoidea. Recent studies have included it in the superfamily Cossoidea. In Europe, the palm borer moth (PBM) Paysandisia archon is the only species of the Castniidae. This moth, native to South America (Argentina and Uruguay), was first reported in Europe (France and Spain) in 2001, but it is believed to have been introduced before 1995 on palm trees imported from Argentina. Since then, the moth has been reported in Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus Islan…
Integrative taxonomy demonstrates the unexpected synonymy between two predatory mite species: Cydnodromus idaeus and C. picanus (Acari: Phytoseiidae)
2011
Contact: tixier@supagro.inra.fr; Species of the mite family Phytoseiidae are well known as predators of mite pests all over the world. Their identification is thus of great interest for biological control. The specimens examined in this study belong to the species Cydnodromus idaeus (described from Brazil) and C. picanus (described from Chile). They were collected together on the same plant in Argentina. These species are mainly differentiated by the presence/absence of the dorsal solenostomes (gland openings) gd2. Some morphometric differences were observed between the Argentinian specimens and the type material of C. idaeus and C. picanus; however, they were not sufficient to support a sp…
Pseudomonas salomonii sp. nov., pathogenic on garlic, and Pseudomonas palleroniara sp. nov., isolated from rice
2002
International audience; A total of 26 strains, including 15 strains isolated from garlic plants with the typical symptoms of 'Café au lait' disease and 11 strains isolated from diseased or healthy rice seeds and sheaths infested by Pseudomonas fuscovaginae, were compared with 70 type or reference strains of oxidase-positive pathogenic or non-pathogenic fluorescent pseudomonads. The strains were characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Numerical taxonomy of phenotypic characteristics showed that the garlic and rice strains were related to each other. However, they clustered into separate phenons, distinct from those of the other strains tested, and were different in several nu…
American Trypanosomiasis Chagas disease : one hundred years of research
2017
Abstract In understanding biodiversity, taxonomy and systematics work together, although the two terms are often confused. The objective of systematics is to understand the natural mechanisms responsible for the biodiversity, while the task of taxonomy is to set up a useful classification of the organisms concerned. The Triatominae (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) are the vectors of Chagas disease. Their classification faces frequent divergence between the modern concepts of systematics and the traditional, morphologically-based, classification. This chapter revises the main concepts of species in general, and their application to the Triatominae. We summarize the current classification of the vecto…

An integrative approach to unravel the Ceratitis FAR (Diptera, Tephritidae) cryptic species complex: a review
2015
Abstract This paper reviews all information gathered from different disciplines and studies to resolve the species status within the Ceratitis FAR (Ceratitis fasciventris, Ceratitis anonae, Ceratitis rosa) complex, a group of polyphagous fruit fly pest species (Diptera, Tephritidae) from Africa. It includes information on larval and adult morphology, wing morphometrics, cuticular hydrocarbons, pheromones, microsatellites, developmental physiology and geographic distribution. The general consensus is that the FAR complex comprises Ceratitis anonae, two species within Ceratitis rosa (so-called R1 and R2) and two putatitve species under Ceratitis fasciventris. The information regarding the lat…
Nuclear rDNA-based molecular clock of the evolution of Triatominae (Hemiptera : Reduviidae), vectors of Chagas disease
2000
The evolutionary history and times of divergence of triatomine bug lineages are estimated from molecular clocks inferred from nucleotide sequences of the small subunit SSU (18S) and the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA of these reduviids. The 18S rDNA molecular clock rate in Triatominae, and Prosorrhynchan Hemiptera in general, appears to be of 1.8% per 100 million years (my). The ITS-2 molecular clock rate in Triatominae is estimated to be around 0.4-1% per 1 my, indicating that ITS-2 evolves 23-55 times faster than 18S rDNA. Inferred chronological data about the evolution of Triatominae fit well with current hypotheses on their evolutionary histories…
Hettangian ammonites from the old iron mine of Beauregard (Thoste, Côte-d’Or, France).
2012
The ammonite fauna of the old iron mine of Beauregard is reviewed. Only nine specimens from this locality are presently known. They are housed in the collections of the “Musée de Semur-en-Auxois”, of the “Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle” (Paris) and of the “Ecole Nationale Supérieuredes Mines” (Claude Bernard University, Lyon 1). The age, or possibly the ages, of these ammonites remain to precise in a coarsely defined time-span including the upper part of the early Hettangian and the middle Hettangian (pro parte?). These fossils, usually finely preserved, were collected during the nineteenth century thanks to intensive mining in the Thoste-Beauregard area. They are illustrated uniforml…
«Amor y Psique.
The present article focuses on studying the argumentative structure of the fable of Amor and Psyche in Calderón’s play Ni amor se libra de amor. The analysis is based on three aspects: the reference to taxonomies within the iconic tradition; meta-theatre; the iconological dimension with respect to the status of the image.
