Helping lecturers address and formulate teaching challenges: an exploratory study

2018

International audience; In this paper we present an exploratory study on the kind of questions or difficulties lecturers point out at the beginning of an educational course – to be addressed in it. These questions happen to be very general and are poorly connected to the knowledge to be taught. We suggest a twofold interpretation of this phenomenon. On the one hand, and in the line of the didactic transposition theory, teachers do not allow themselves to raise questions about the knowledge that is supposed to be their main field of expertise. On the other hand, the prevailing institutional pedagogy does not provide teachers with a fruitful enough conceptual frame to formulate this kind of q…

The design of didactic sequences in which it promotes a methological …

“Beyond Weather Regimes”: Descriptors Monitoring Atmospheric Centers of Action. A case study for Aotearoa New Zealand

2021

AbstractThis paper introduces a set of descriptors applied to weather regimes, that allow for a detailed monitoring of the location and intensity of their atmospheric centers of action (e.g. troughs and ridges) and the gradients between them, when applicable. Descriptors are designed to document the effect of climate variability and change in modulating the character of daily weather regimes, rather than merely their occurrence statistics. As a case study, the methodology is applied to Aotearoa New Zealand (ANZ), using ERA5 ensemble reanalysis data for the period 1979-2019. Here, we analyze teleconnections between the regimes and their descriptors, and large-scale climate variability. Result…

Brokers in the tea trade between China and West Africa

2021

Brokers have played important roles in the trade of green tea between China and Mali, from the 19th century when tea first came to Mali up to the present. They mediate between tea buyers and sellers, work on their own account, use soft skills, knowledge and networks and make a living from the commission they gain. This article examines the work of brokers in the tea trade, the social constellations in which they are active and the scope of their activity. Based on extensive field research in Mali and China, this article shows how brokers create their own jobs in a dynamic business landscape, which is often delimited by governmental policies, competing entrepreneurial activities and social …

Developing Online Collaborative Games for e-Learning Environments

2014

Based on our experience, we believe that games, competition and teamwork offer a pleasant and active way of learning. This is much more efficient when the learner has a smile on his face, when he is astonished and curious about next levels and finds the game sufficiently challenging and fun to try again. Our application proposal has the purpose of implementing an e-Learning platform for improving the teaching and learning process in somewhat abstract domains, such as computer architecture or object oriented programming, with the help of games. These games are time-dependent and are able to support collaboration between groups. To this date there are two learning games implemented: a crosswo…

Graduate Studies of Global Change at the University of Latvia

2010

In 2008 the University of Latvia (UL) completed an 18-month project of innovation – design, preparation and pilot-test of a 4-semester programme of trans-disciplinary graduate studies in “science, global change, and technologies for sustainable development” based on the experience the project team had acquired during 1997–2006 endorsing studies in “physics and technologies for sustainable development” and organizing two international conferences on “integrative approaches towards sustainability”. Within the project activities 25 members from faculties of natural sciences of the UL prepared and tested innovative courses of a 2 semester pilot programme comprising 4 modules, the audience being…

Infective Endocarditis: Preliminary Results of a Cohort Study in the Southern Italian Population.

2020

Background Infective endocarditis (IE) is an uncommon disease with an involved interplay of clinical and surgical team management. We aimed to define diagnosis parameters and delineate in-hospital management in patients with IE admitted in a tertiary hospital of Southern Italian. Materials and methods Fifty-six consecutive patients (42 males, 14 females; age range: 34-85 years) admitted for IE in the Infectious Diseases, Cardiac Surgery, and Cardiology units, between January 2011 and August 2017, were enrolled. Demographic data, mortality, comorbidities, specimen type, microscopy results, special histological staining performed, and antimicrobial therapy were collected and analyzed. Any com…

Protein Corona: Prevention of Dominant IgG Adsorption on Nanocarriers in IgG‐Enriched Blood Plasma by Clusterin Precoating (Adv. Sci. 10/2019)

2019

The development of nanocarriers for drug delivery is challenged by individual blood composition fluctuations. In article number 1802199, Svenja Morsbach and co‐workers report the accumulation of immunoglobulins in the protein corona of nanocarriers in IgG‐enriched blood plasma resulting in increased cell uptake. This could be prevented by pre‐coating the nanocarriers with the “stealth” protein clusterin. Cover design by Stefan Schuhmacher.

Coach autonomy support and quality of sport engagement in young soccer players.

2009

Based on the self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000), this study tested a model of the assumed sequential relationships between perceived autonomy support, psychological need satisfaction, self-determined motivation, and enjoyment/boredom. The hypothesized mediational roles of psychological need satisfaction and self-determined motivation were also studied. In a sample of 370 young male soccer players, path analysis results offered support for the proposed model. Total mediation was supported in the case of the psychological need satisfaction in the relationship between autonomy support and self-determined motivation, and partial mediation for self-determined motivation in the lin…

The emergence of drug resistance to targeted cancer therapies: Clinical evidence.

2019

For many decades classical anti-tumor therapies included chemotherapy, radiation and surgery; however, in the last two decades, following the identification of the genomic drivers and main hallmarks of cancer, the introduction of therapies that target specific tumor-promoting oncogenic or non-oncogenic pathways, has revolutionized cancer therapeutics. Despite the significant progress in cancer therapy, clinical oncologists are often facing the primary impediment of anticancer drug resistance, as many cancer patients display either intrinsic chemoresistance from the very beginning of the therapy or after initial responses and upon repeated drug treatment cycles, acquired drug resistance deve…
