A Design-Oriented Analysis of Multimodality in English as a Foreign Language

This empirical article investigates multimodality in English as a foreign language, both as seen in the use of multimodal texts as artefacts and pedagogical texts for learning, and through an analysis of the multimodal learning designs. We present observations from a year 10 classroom in Norway that worked with the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Alexie, 2007). We explore a four-week teaching sequence, asking how different modes were involved when the educator designed literacy events around the novel, and how multimodality is present in the students’ meaning making. Inklusiivinen opetus on yleistymässä suomalaisissa kouluissa myös vieraan kielen tunneilla. Oppilaiden hyvin erilaiset taitotasot luovat opettajalle haasteen toteuttaa kaikille sopivaa opetusta samassa tilassa. Lisäksi erilaiset oppimisvaikeudet tulisi ottaa huomioon opetusta suunniteltaessa ja toteuttaessa. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää laadullisen kyselytutkimuksen avulla suomalaisten vieraan kielen opettajien käyttämiä sekä tehokkaaksi kokemia opetusmenetelmiä. Prospective elementary teachers’ perceptions of the processes of modeling: A case study

In this paper we discuss a study on the approaches to modeling of students of the 4-year elementary school teacher program at the University of Palermo, Italy. The answers to a specially designed questionnaire are analyzed on the basis of an a priori analysis made using a general scheme of reference on the epistemology of mathematics and physics. The study is performed by using quantitative data analysis methods, i.e. factorial analysis of the correspondences and implicative analysis. Actual and Potential Pedagogical Use of Tablets in Schools

This study reviews the potential of tablet technology for teaching and learning. In autumn 2012, we conducted a focused survey comprising quantitative and qualitative questions with Finnish teachers (N = 171, from 54 schools). We focused on perceived pedagogical opportunities and the actualized pedagogical potential of tablets at schools. The survey results indicate that the actual usefulness of tablets in schools was significantly less than what teachers perceived as the pedagogical potential. However, the results demonstrate the positive impact these devices are having on teaching and learning, as well as prompting changes in pedagogical perspectives. Tämän proseminaari-työn tarkoitus oli tutkia, miten suuri vaikutus englanninopettajalla on oppilaidensa opiskelumotivaatioon sekä selvittää, mitkä motivointitekniikat oppilaat kokevat tehokkaimmiksi tavoiksi nostaa omaa opiskelumotivaatiotaan. Opiskelumotivaatio määrittelee sen, miksi opiskelemme sekä sen, miten määrätietoisesti ja innokkaasti haluamme oppia.
