Diversity in Teams : Perceptions of Team Learning Behaviour in a Military Staff Exercise
2020
The aim of this study is to analyse diversity in team learning behaviour between and among national respondents’ perceptions during a military staff exercise (CJSE). Edmondson’s team learning behaviour model is used as the theoretical basis of the study. The results showed statistically significant differences both between and among national respondents’ perceptions. The research results indicate that team leader coaching, team psychological safety, the importance of obtaining expert knowledge as well as pre-exercise training are perceived to be crucial for team learning behaviour. The study has theoretical and practical implications for a more nuanced understanding of the diversity of team…
Collaborative Problem Solving in Finnish Pre-service Teacher Education: A Case Study
2017
This chapter provides results from a case study utilising the ATC21STM assessment portal in the context of pre-service teacher education in Finland. The results from the portal are combined with a questionnaire regarding teamwork and collaboration dispositions. Twenty-four pre-service teachers completed both these measures. The students of this study were following two divergent teacher education programs that had different profiles in terms of their study contents and methods of studying. The participants of both groups tended to be highly disposed to collaborate and work in teams, and their collaborative problem solving skills can be described as very good. The participants’ measured soci…
Learning mechanisms in multidisciplinary teamwork with real customers and open-ended problems
2015
Recently, there has been a trend towards adding a multidisciplinary or multicultural element to traditional monodisciplinary project courses in computing and engineering. In this article, we examine the implications of multidisciplinarity for students’ learning experiences during a one-semester project course for real customers. We use a qualitative research approach and base our analysis on students’ learning reports on three instances of a project course titled Multidisciplinary working life project. The main contribution of this article is the unified theoretical picture of the learning mechanisms stemming from multidisciplinarity. Our main conclusions are that (1) students generally hav…

Sistēmu Freshdesk un Teamwork savienotājs
2022
2016
This study discusses a teaching experience that has been taking place at the School of Economics and Business at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) since the academic year 2012-2013. We implement a self-evaluation mechanism: students working on group projects are required to deliver a joint declaration in which they asses their individual participation in the accomplishment of the joint task. The importance of this device is twofold. On the one hand, it reduces conflictivity among team members and, on the other hand, it delivers quantitative elements to the lecturer for grading the individual participation to the group report. The results of our experience provide evidence that foreign…
The value trade-off in higher education service: A qualitative intercultural approach to students’ perceptions
2016
Purpose: Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have become a highly competitive market, where consumers (i.e. students) are highly involved in their choices, and managers need to focus on competitive edges. This paper aims to understand the factors that influence international Master students’ choice behaviour and fulfil student expectations of customer value in HEIs. Design/methodology: With qualitative information (five focus groups) collected from international students (of 12 different nationalities) of several universities in Spain, UK and China, the paper investigates the formation of customer value as a trade-off between benefits and costs. This qualitative approach aims first at asse…
“At worst it leads to madness.” A phenomenographic approach on how early childhood education professionals experience emotions in teamwork
2022
Teamwork is a key part of almost any person’s working life. At its best, teamwork embodies a good team spirit and increases employee well-being, but at its worst, a team is characterized by mistrust or competition between members where action and development is not possible. In this study we explored what types of emotions early childhood education professionals experience during teamwork. These questions are answered with the help of a phenomenographic approach. As a theoretical frame, in this study, we utilize Warr’s (2012) Affective circumplex model. According to our results the ECE professional’s experienced emotions can be mostly described through the categories of enthusiasm, anxiety,…

The data come from a videotaped performance of a professional theater, portraying a story about a workplace organization going through a personnel training program. By focusing on four core episodes of the play, the study on the one hand points out to the multiple changes taking place both within and between the different episodes of the play. On the other hand, the episodes of collective action involving the semiotic re…
