Optical quality after instillation of eyedrops in dry-eye syndrome
2010
Purpose To study the effect of eyedrop instillation on the optical quality of the air–tear film interface at the anterior cornea in cases of dry eye. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Methods Corneal aberrations (total, spherical-like, and coma-like) were determined from corneal elevation maps and purpose-designed software in cases of dry eye before, immediately after, and 10 minutes after lubricating eyedrop instillation (Blink Intensive Tears). All data were decomposed using Zernike polynomials to yield the root-mean-square wavefront deviations for pupil diameters of 3.0 mm and 5.5 mm. Outcome measures included comparison with clinical tear breakup time (TBUT). Results Wave…
Comparison of two artificial tear formulations for dry eye through high‐resolution optical coherence tomography
2011
Purpose: The aim was to determine the efficacy of two artificial eye-drop formulations by analysing the lower tear film meniscus volume through a commercial high-resolution spectral-domain optical coherence tomographer. Methods: Twenty dry eye patients (12 men, eight women, aged 57.5 ± 8.4 years) with refractive errors from -2.50 to +0.75 D (mean -1.34 ± 1.02 D) and cylinders lower than 1.00 D were examined. Tear meniscus volume was measured before, immediately after and 10, 30 and 60 minutes after instillation using the Copernicus high-resolution spectral-domain optical coherence tomographer (Optopol Tech SA, Zawiercie, Poland). Volume was calculated from the local area obtained from tom…
Schirmer test results: are they associated with topical or systemic medication?
2018
To test whether Schirmer test (ST) results are associated with topical or systemic medication and to evaluate the distribution of tear fluid quantity in a 3-min and 5-min ST.The Gutenberg Health Study is a population-based, prospective, observational cohort study in Germany. ST was assessed in a sub-cohort of 1,999 participants. ST was performed under topical anesthesia for 5 min (ST-5) or of 3 min (ST-3). Anthropometric factors, systemic diseases, use of systemic and eye medications were recorded. We used multivariable quantile regression analysis to assess the influence on ST measurements. The length of wetting of the Schirmer strips for ST-5 was 23.2 ± 9.31 mm for right and 22.9 ± 9.0 mm …
Comparison of the influence of corneo-scleral and scleral lenses on ocular surface and tear film metrics in a presbyopic population
2018
PURPOSE: To assess and compare the effect of the corneo-scleral lenses (C-ScL) and scleral lenses (ScL) on tear film parameters and central corneal thickness (CCT) in healthy presbyopic subjects. METHODS: Thirty subjects wore two contact lenses (CLs), randomly assigned, of neutral power, but of different diameters, 12.7mm (C-ScL) and 18mm (ScL) and being equal in the others parameters: material (HS100) and centre thickness (0.29mm). At baseline, 20min after insertion and at 8h, the tear meniscus area (TMA) and CCT was measured (with optical coherence tomography) as well as tear osmolarity. RESULTS: TMA revealed statistical differences for both lenses at 20min (p<0.001), and also at 8h (p=0.…
OCT applications in contact lens fitting
2022
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive, high-speed, high-resolution imaging technology based in the Michaelson interferometry. A near-infrared light beam is used to register the intensity variations for the light backscattered on each sample layer. Due to the high repeatability on corneal measurements, spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) is the gold standard when talking about in vivo, non-invasive anterior segment imaging. Changes in the morphology of various ocular surfaces such as the cornea, conjunctiva, limbus or tear film with soft (SCL), rigid, corneal or scleral lens (SL) wear can be described by OCT measurements. For instance, evaluation of the corneoscleral region is essenti…

Topical glaucoma medications – Clinical implications for the ocular surface
2022
Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. The use of topical eye drops to reduce intraocular pressure remains the mainstay treatment. These eye drops frequently contain preservatives designed to ensure sterility of the compound. A growing number of clinical and experimental studies report the detrimental effects of not only these preservatives but also the active pharmaceutical compounds on the ocular surface, with resultant tear film instability and dry eye disease. Herein, we critically appraise the published literature exploring the effects of preservatives and pharmaceutical compounds on the ocular surface. publishedVersion
Aggregated neutrophil extracellular traps occlude Meibomian glands during ocular surface inflammation
2021
Abstract Purpose Obstructive Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is one of the leading causes of evaporative dry eye disease. Meibomian glands at the eyelid secrete lipids that prevent evaporation of the aqueous tear film. The pathogenesis of obstructive MGD is incompletely understood to date. Herein, we aim to investigate the pathogenesis of obstructive MGD using murine and human samples with various forms of ocular surface inflammation. Method The presence of Neutrophil extracellular Traps (NETs) was detected with immunofluorescence analysis of ocular surface discharge and biopsy samples from patients with blepharitis. Tear fluid from patients with MGD and blepharitis were evaluated for the…
SELDI-TOF-MS ProteinChip array profiling of tears from patients with dry eye.
2005
Protein and peptides in tears play an important role in ocular surface diseases. In previous studies, changes have been demonstrated in the electrophoretic protein profiles of patients with dry eye. The purpose of this work was to determine the usefulness of surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) ProteinChip Array (Ciphergen Biosystems, Inc., Fremont, CA) technology for the automated analysis of proteins and peptides in tear fluid.Patients with dry eye (DRY, n = 88) and healthy subjects (CTRL, n = 71) were examined. Their tear proteins were analyzed using SELDI-TOF-MS ProteinChip Arrays with three different chromatographic surfaces (CM10…
