Rhetoric and Pragmatics: Suggestions for a Fruitful Dialogue
2013
The aim of this paper is to show that classical rhetoric can provide valuable insights in the contemporary debate in pragmatics. This is especially true for Aristotelian rhetoric, due to its philosophical approach. In the first part of the paper, I discusses the conditions under which ancient rhetoric can be a real partner of current pragmatics: (1) rhetoric must be understood as a type of knowledge (a techne) and not as a “jumbles of techniques”; (2) we need to consider persuasion as an anthropological feature and not only as a specific case of communication; (3) we should not exclude truth from the rhetorical field. The second part of the paper focuses on what can be considered the basic …
Level lifetimes in neutron-rich Ru isotopes
1995
The neutron-rich Ru isotopes are situated between the strongly deformed Sr-Zr region with axial deformation of f l _ 0.40 [1] and the spherical Cd-Sn region. Evidence for triaxiality of even-even Ru isotopes has been presented in [2-5], and lifetimes of some of their 2 + states have been measured in fission studies [6-9]. It seems, however, that in these experiments the nearly identical energies of the 2 + ---* 0 + transitions in l~ and 11~ could not be separated. Therefore, high-resolution measurements are required in order to perceive the evolution of deformation with increasing neutron number. So far only few measurements by the delayed-coincidence method [10] have been performed on chem…
The decay of105Tc to levels in105Ru
1975
Theβ−-decay of 7.6-min105Tc has been investigated byβ- andγ-ray singles and coincidence measurements. The activities have been produced by thermal-neutron-induced fission of235U or239Pu and subsequent chemical separation of the technetium fraction from the fission product mixture. AQβ-value of 3.2±0.2 MeV has been determined. In a delayed coincidence experiment the lifetime of the first excited state in105Ru at 20.55 keV has been measured to be 340±15 nsec. A level scheme of105Ru is proposed and compared with the results of recent nuclear reaction studies like104Ru(d, p) and104Ru(n, γ). From beta branching ratios to levels in105Ru, ground state spin and parity of 5/2+ can be suggested for10…
Technophysis. Le tecniche della natura
2022
A simple method of bronchoprovocation using a valved holding chamber.
2004
This study was undertaken to ascertain whether the use of a valved holding chamber (VHC) during bronchial provocation testing might increase lung deposition and repeatability of the test relative to the tidal breathing method. The 2-min tidal breathing results were compared to five inhalations from a VHC device in patients using the Pari-provoII nebulizer (MMD = 2.1mkm). Lung and mouth deposition, losses though the exhaled air and losses before aerosol delivery to the patient's mouth were measured in patients using a radiolabeled 99Tc-DTPA solution and gamma camera. The study revealed that lung deposition was 67% with the VHC method, and losses with exhaled air were 29% of the inhaled amoun…
Entre théorie et pratique. Aristote et le strabisme de la techne
2017
The Aristotelian reflection on the epistemological status of techne, and more specifically on the definition of rhetoric as a techne, can help us to rethink the very actual cleavage between theory and practice. A good techne, as the rhetoric has to be according to Aristotle, has not to choose between theory and practice, between the universal and the particular, but should be able to look simultaneously in both directions and to keep them together. We will try to show that may be worth to rediscover and to introduce the Aristotelian notion of techne into the contemporary epistemological and philosophical debate.
1937, Palermo: la scoperta del tecneto
2018
The Italian and international scenario of Physics and Chemistry in the thirties will be described, in order to introduce and better understand the successive steps that followed to the discovery of element 43 (Technetium). Of course, more emphasis will be given to the academic life in Palermo, where the discover took place: main characters and bit actors will be treated to give a full picture of the milieu. Finally, a glance will be given to the political events preceding and following the discover, and their consequences on people involved, as the possibility to realize in Palermo a multi disciplinary research team of high level, working on innovative arguments, was deeply compromised by t…
Eros e techne. "Nella mano che trattiene una mano assente"
2011
Come ha scritto Derrida, il tema del "toccare" è centrale nella filosofia di Jean-Luc Nancy. Scopo del saggio è attestare questa verità attraverso due temi cari a Jean-Luc Nancy: l'eros e la tecnica.
G.F.R. measuring with 99mTc-DTPA: limits in obstructive acute renal failure.
1991
After a short introduction on the advantages and limits of G.F.R. determination with Ccr, the radioisotopic methods proposed by Schlegel and Gates for this parameter are described, and as well as ERPF and FF, without blood serial samples being necessary. In a severe renal failure case due to obstruction, the Authors have found a great mismatch in the results between the traditional methods and the radioisotopic ones. After the clinical case description, a possible explanation of this discrepancy is proposed: Schlegel and Gates' methods, which well correlate Ccr in chronic renal failure cases, in severe renal failure on obstructive basis, of recent onset, could not indicate the effective glo…
