An Experimental Investigation of Residual Stresses in Hard Machining of AISI 52100 Steel

2011

In this paper an experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effects of the tool cutting-edge geometry, workpiece hardness, cutting speed, and microstructural changes (white and dark layers) on the residual stresses in dry orthogonal hard machining of AISI 52100 steel. X-ray diffraction technique was used to obtain in-depth residual stresses profiles in both axial and circumferential directions. The results show that tool geometry, workpiece hardness and cutting parameters significantly affect the surface residual stress, maximum compressive residual stress below the machined surface and its location. Moreover, microstructural analysis shows that thermally-induced phase transf…

Preparation of photocatalytic brookite thin films

2007

Pure brookite films were deposited from a brookite dispersion obtained by peptizing a mixture brookite–rutile prepared by thermolysis of TiCl4 in a HCl solution. The films were characterised by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The photoactivity of the samples was tested by using the photo-oxidation of 2-propanol in gas–solid regime as a probe reaction. The brookite films efficiently degraded 2-propanol under UV illumination.

Sol-gel synthesis and photocatalytic activity of ZnO-SnO2 nanocomposites

2014

Abstract ZnO–SnO 2 nanocomposites were synthesized by a facile sol–gel synthesis route and characterized through X-ray diffraction, BET specific surface area analysis, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was tested using the degradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV light as model reaction. The ZnO/SnO 2 molar ratio was varied in order to study its influence on the photoefficiency of the samples. The ZnO–SnO 2 nanocomposites showed higher photoactivity than the pure oxides and in particular the sample with ZnO/SnO 2 mol…

Photocatalytic behaviour of metal-loaded TiO2 aqueous dispersions and films

2007

Abstract Titanium dioxide nanoparticles loaded with Ce, Co, Eu, Sm, W and Yb species were prepared by coprecipitation in mild conditions using TiCl 4 as precursor with the aim to enhance the photocatalytic activity, especially under visible light irradiation. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area (SSA) determination and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the powders of pure and loaded TiO 2 was investigated by employing the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol as probe reaction in a liquid–solid system. Loading with suitable amounts of W, Co and Sm resulted in a significan…

Innovative user defined density profile approach to fsw of aluminium foam

2007

Metallic foams are one of the most exciting materials in the world of mechanical industry due to their reduced mass and the good mechanical, thermal and acoustic characteristics. Consequently, their application, is increasing day by day even with the important drawbacks that reduce their suitability and diffusion such as high manufacturing cost and difficulty in processing. An innovative approach is outlined in this paper that enables the production of complex shapes taking advantage of deformation processing and friction stir welding (FSW). The aim is to create customized tailored manufactured parts. The cellular construction of foams makes this approach rather challenging as the cell wall…

HPLC profile and evolution during storage of triglycerides and diglycerides in virgin olive oils

2008

High-performance liquid chromatography has been used for determining the triglyceridice and diglyceridice composition of olive oils from main, minor and neglected Sicilians cultivars. The HPLC analysis has allowed the identification and the quantification of 16 triglycerides. Among these, OOO, POO+SOL, OOL and POL, have shown a content higher than 84% of the total area of peaks in the chromatographic profile. Dioleine (OO) and oleopalmitine (OP) resulted the most representative diglycerides. Analyses have been made in January 2007 and repeated after six months, submitting samples to a simulation of shelf life, to verify as the storage conditions may influence the hydrolitic processes of tri…

Production Planning in Production Networks: Models for Medium and Short-term Planning

2008

Distributed production networks are structures which are considered able to provide the organisational agility and efficiency necessary to compete in the global market. The performance of such organisations heavily depends on the ability of those involved in the network to coordinate their activities. Two approaches are available for managing complex distributed production networks: a centralised approach, where a unique entity (the planner, for instance) has all the necessary information to make planning decisions for the entire network; or a decentralised approach where each entity in the network has the necessary information and knowledge to make autonomous planning decisions, while the …

On the finite element simulation of thermal phenomena in machining processes

2007

Machining processes are frequently investigated by numerical simulations. Usually 2D analyses are carried out in order to reduce CPU times, considering orthogonal cutting conditions. In this way, the computational time sharply reduces and many process variables may be calculated (i.e. forces, chip morphology, shear angle, contact length). On the other hand, the analysis of thermal aspects involved in machining, for instance the temperature distribution reached in tool, still represents an open problem. Finite element codes are able to simulate a very short process time that is not sufficient to reach steady state conditions. Several approaches have been proposed to overcome this problem: in…

The Existence of Nitrate Radicals in Irradiated TiO 2 Aqueous Suspensions in the Presence of Nitrate Ions

2018

Evidence of the existence of nitrate radical in irradiated aqueous TiO2 suspensions in the presence of nitrate ions are reported for the first time. The joint use of UV/Vis and EPR spectroscopy showed that nitrate radicals are formed by hole induced oxidation of nitrate ions. Photocatalytic degradation of a model alkene compound allowed to highlight the presence of an intermediate organic nitrate deriving from nitrate radical attack to the double bond of the substrate. These results not only allow deeper understanding of photocatalytic processes, but open the route to new green photocatalytic syntheses initiated by nitrate radicals and to new insights in the field of atmospheric chemistry.
