Xiphactinus audax is the largest macropredatory osteichthyan ever known (Everhart et al., 2010). Some of the largest specimens exceed 5 m in total length, although the discovery of a few large, isolated teeth suggests that this teleost could reach even larger body sizes (Vavrek et al., 2016, and references therein). Fossil remains of this species have only been reported from the Upper Cretaceous of North America, across the Western Interior Basin (Schwimmer et al., 1997; Vavrek et al., 2016). Abstract In this study the spontaneous in vitro cytotoxic activity to tumour cell lines, (K562), by unstimulated sea bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax ) leukocytes was examined by trypan blue exclusion test and lactate dehydrogenase release assay. A high anti-tumour cell line activity of resident peritoneal leukocytes was found at an effector to target ratio (E:T) of 25:1 after incubation for 2 h at 18° C. Rabbit and sheep erythrocytes were not lysed. A low activity was displayed by head kidney and spleen cell populations whereas blood leukocytes revealed no significant activity. Glucocorticoid hormone receptors (GR), members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily, are ligand-dependent transcription factors expressed in various tissues by binding to specific DNA sequences. Since glucocorticoids have a role in maintaining the homeostatic status in fish, we previously cloned and sequenced a GR (DlGR1) of adult Dicentrarchus labrax; we also showed mRNA expression (in situ hybridization) and tissue immunohistochemical localization of DlGR1 in several organs. This work has now been extended to the examination of the expression, tissue distribution, and cytolocalization of DlGR1 in larval developmental stages by similar methods to those used for the adult organs. Abstract The karyotypes of five species of Scorpaenidae (genera Scorpenopsis, Dendrochirus and Pterois) from the Indian Ocean were analysed using various banding methods and in situ hybridisation with a ribosomal probe. All the species investigated are characterised by a diploid set of 48 chromosomes (mainly acrocentric and/or subtelocentric) and by a NOR location on the small arm of a medium‐sized pair. All the chromosomes stained uniformly with DAPI, whereas C‐banding evidenced a small amount of hete‐rochromatin. Bacteria associated with winter mortalities in laboratory-reared common dentex (Dentex dentex L.)

A pathological study was conducted on laboratory-reared juvenile common dentex (Dentex dentex) suffering trickling and continuous mortalities. During a 3-month period (October-December), water temperature, clinical signs and mortalities were recorded. Moribund or dead fish were examined for bacteria and parasites. Bacteria were isolated from head kidney and external ulcers, and samples from the gills, intestine, stomach, trunk kidney, gall bladder and liver were taken for histology. Cumulative mortality reached 73%, and 80% of fish examined were positive for bacteria (102 isolates). This study describes a new aporocotylid genus and species, Skoulekia meningialis n. gen., n. sp. which was detected in the ectomeningeal veins surrounding the optic lobes of the brain of the common two-banded seabream Diplodus vulgaris (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817) from the Gulf of Valencia (Mediterranean Sea). The monogenean Ligophorus chabaudi was originally described on the gills of the flathead mullet, Mugil cephalus, and was subsequently reported on the So-iuy mullet, Mugil soiuy. However, the morphology of sclerotized parts and multivariate statistical analyses suggest that the form from the So-iuy mullet represents a new species. Zeuxapta seriolae (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) infection was associated with important mortalities of amberjacks (Seriola dumerili) reared in tanks in the experimental facilities of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (Western Mediterranean) during the period 1998–2000. Fish infested by this parasite presented characteristics similar to those described for Seriola quinqueradiata parasitized by Heteraxine heterocerca in Japan. All dead amberjacks had high parasite abundance (mean abundance±S.D.=686.7±125.4) and egg strings entangled in gills.
