The Impact of Internet and Social Media Use on Well-Being

The present research examines the longitudinal average impact of frequency of use of Internet and social networking sites (SNS) on subjective well-being of adolescents in Germany. Based on five-wave panel data that cover a period of nine years, we disentangle between-person and within-person effects of media use on depressive symptomatology and life satisfaction as indicators of subjective well-being. Additionally, we control for confounders such as TV use, self-esteem, and satisfaction with friends. Social television has transformed the traditional role of the television viewers by providing ‘ordinary people’ access to the public stage. This article describes how public access to television affected the dialogues of Finnish tweeters on Twitter during the massive media event of the FIFA World Cup. Through the lens of digital conversation analysis, the study shows how the media publicity of tweets changed the direction of the interaction between tweeters and transformed their roles vis-à-vis the television show, making one of them into a ‘media flasher’ and the others viewers of his or her performance. The main detector components of the Crystal Barrel (CBAR) experiment at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN are two proportional wire chambers, a jet drift chamber and an electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 1380 CsI(Tl) crystals, with a total of 4380 analog channels. A description is given of the use of distributed VME-based microcomputers to collect data from the various subdetectors and to merge the full event information in a global event builder. At this level the data are transferred to a mu VAX for tape storage and monitoring. >
