Imaging of long head biceps tendon. A multimodality pictorial essay
2019
The aim of this article is to provide an imaging review of normal anatomy, most common anatomical variants and pathologies of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHB) encountered during the daily practice. (www.actabiomedica.it).
Exploration of muscle–tendon biomechanics one year after Achilles tendon rupture and the compensatory role of flexor hallucis longus
2023
Achilles tendon (AT) rupture leads to long-term structural and functional impairments. Currently, the predictors of good recovery after rupture are poorly known. Thus, we aimed to explore the interconnections between structural, mechanical, and neuromuscular parameters and their associations with factors that could explain good recovery in patients with non-surgically treated AT rupture. A total of 35 patients with unilateral rupture (6 females) participated in this study. Muscle-tendon structural, mechanical, and neuromuscular parameters were measured 1-year after rupture. Interconnections between the inter-limb differences (Δ) were explored using partial correlations, followed by multivar…
The use of ultrasound to study muscle–tendon function in human posture and locomotion
2013
Analysis of human movement has traditionally relied on measures such as kinematics, kinetics and electromyography. These measures provide valuable information about movement performance and make it possible to draw inferences about muscle and tendon function. Musculoskeletal models are also used frequently to examine the relationship between joint kinematics and muscle-tendon behaviour, and have provided important insights into both healthy and clinical gait. However, muscles interact with compliant tendons during movement, which complicates interpretation of muscle and tendon function based on external measures such as joint kinematics. Accordingly, methods have been developed that enable …
Similar biomechanical properties of four tripled tendon graft models for ACL reconstruction
2021
Abstract Purpose The present study tested and compared the biomechanical properties of four different triplicate graft tendon techniques. Methods 32 tripled tendons from the common extensor muscle of bovine fingers were tested on a material testing machine, passing the end loop over a metal rod of a clevis connected to the load cell on the upper side, and fixing the lower end to a clamp. The samples were divided into four groups: (A) tripled with a free end sutured only to one of the two fixed bundles (B) tripled with a free end positioned between the two fixed strands and sutured to both (C) tripled with an S-shape and all the three strands sutured together at the upper and lower extremiti…
Load progression criteria in exercise programmes in lower limb tendinopathy: a systematic review
2020
ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to summarise and analyse the current literature about what progression criteria are applied in loading exercise programmes in lower limb tendinopathies and their evidence and effectiveness.DesignSystematic review.MethodsPubMed, Embase, Scopus and PEDrowere searched from inception to 24 September 2020. The inclusion criteria were randomised controlled trials that included patients with midportion Achilles, patellar or gluteal tendinopathy; assessed function, pain or performance; included at least one group where progressive physical exercise was administered as monotherapy; included at least a control group. We excluded studies that included subjects w…
Ultrastructural causes of rupture of hand tendons in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. A transmission and scanning electron microscopic study.
1993
To identify the cause of rupture of hand tendons in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, we studied the underlying ultrastructural changes of the collagenous fibril systems. Samples of the flexor digitorum superficialis (n = 12) and the extensor digitorum communis (n = 20) were taken during tenosynovectomy. Tendons dissected at necropsy (n = 30) served as controls. Specimens were analysed by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Interfibrillar dysplastic fibrils, "Luse bodies", and intracellular collagen were found in rheumatoid tissues. The diameters of collagen fibrils were significantly reduced compared with the control group (p0.01). The duration of the disease usually correlate…
Influence of sutures configuration on the strength of tendon-patch joints for rotator cuff tears treatment
2019
Abstract Purpose Massive rotator cuff tears are common in the aging population. The incidence of failed rotator cuff repairs is still quite high, especially in the treatment of full-thickness tears or revision repairs. In this context, natural and synthetic meshes can be used as augmentation scaffolds or as devices to close the gap between a retracted tendon and the bone. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the ultimate tensile strength of different tendon-patch joints in order to consider their use in the treatment of massive cuff tears. Materials and methods Porcine tendons and a synthetic low-density polypropylene mesh have been used. A preliminary study on the tensile strength of te…
