Uncovering value through exploration of barriers:A perspective on intellectual property rights in a national innovation system

2023

Although for a long time policy has emphasized the role of intellectual property rights as a growth agent facilitating innovation, the literature has called into question this relationship. Critical studies have focused on studying policy frames and protection modes that could transform the intellectual property rights system to be more beneficial. Studies have not, however, focused on the intellectual property rights system stakeholders in cocreating the system. Our study contributes to the literature by uncovering the tensions in developing a national-level intellectual property rights strategy. Using the Delphi method, we draw from a broad stakeholder dialogue to show the barriers for in…

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEM) of a Customized Stent-Graft for Endovascular (EVAR) Treatment of Abdominal Aorti…

2023

Background: The treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is today commonly treated by inserting a stent-graft by the endovascular route, without resorting to open surgery. However, some clinical cases do not allow this less invasive approach, meaning that the stent-graft cannot be inserted and open surgery is used. Methods: In the study, we propose a fluid–structure interaction (FSI) analysis of an aneurysmatic aorta that could not be treated with Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). The vessel is reconstructed through segmentation from CT scans and subsequently modeled on CAD software to create the surface and thickness of the vessel itself. Subsequently, we proceeded to carry out Comp…

Image classification based on 2D feature motifs

2013

The classification of raw data often involves the problem of selecting the appropriate set of features to represent the input data. In general, various features can be extracted from the input dataset, but only some of them are actually relevant for the classification process. Since relevant features are often unknown in real-world problems, many candidate features are usually introduced. This degrades both the speed and the predictive accuracy of the classifier due to the presence of redundancy in the candidate feature set. In this paper, we study the capability of a special class of motifs previously introduced in the literature, i.e. 2D irredundant motifs, when they are exploited as feat…

Bakalaura darbs sastāv no četrām daļām. Darba kopējais apjoms ir 77 lpp, kas sevī ietver 5 tabulas, 29 attēlus un 50 izmantos literatūras avotus. Identification of various retention/release behaviours of odorant molecules in dairy and pectin gels: the role of structural features

2014

Reducing the fat content in food requires a reformulation by adding thickeners that may cause a different perception of aroma. Maintaining an adequate level of acceptability of these reformulated products for consumers requires a better understanding of the mechanisms that control the retention/release balance of odorant molecules in food matrices. [1]. Although pectins are commonly employed as thickeners [2], their effect on the retention of odorant molecules in nonhomogeneous products [3, 4] has been examined more frequently than their effect on the retention of odorant molecules in simple model gels [5]. The purpose of this study was to explore and compare the effects of pectin in differ…

Reconceptualising the Role of Talk in CLIL

2011

This theoretical paper offers a reconceptualisation of talk in CLIL based on sociocultural and dialogic theories of education. Building on these educational theories and the experiences of an on-going CLIL project, this paper presents a pedagogical model for the navigation of the ‘talkscape’ of the CLIL classroom. This model comprises a total of seven talk-types: organisational, social, critical, expert, exploratory, meta and pedagogic. In addition to these talk-types, the paper introduces the notion of a ‘transitional dynamic’. This notion aims to capture the transition from first language to foreign language use in CLIL both within the context of individual courses and across a broader CL…

Pedagogical approaches for e-assessment with authentication and authorship verification in Higher Education

2019

Checking the identity of students and authorship of their online submissions is a major concern in Higher Education due to the increasing amount of plagiarism and cheating using the Internet. The literature on the effects of e-authentication systems for teaching staff is very limited because it is a novel procedure for them. A considerable gap is to understand teaching staff' views regarding the use of e-authentication instruments and how they impact trust in e-assessment. This mixed-method study examines the concerns and practices of 108 teaching staff who used the TeSLA—Adaptive Trust-based e-Assessment System in six countries: the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Finland and Turkey.…

Teachers’ pedagogical and relational identity negotiation in the Finnish CLIL context

2017

Abstract This study explores the professional identity of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) teachers in Finnish primary education. It aims at explaining how CLIL teachers negotiate their pedagogical and relational identity, and how identity agency is exercised in negotiating a more encompassing professional identity. Thematic analysis of thirteen interviews outlines the bi-directional process of identity negotiation between personal and professional resources, and social contexts at work. The results highlight a connection between professional identity and agency, and suggest that identity negotiation is a process of working and sharing with others, but also individually.

Constructing a pedagogical practice across disciplines in pre-service teacher education

2019

In this paper we report a qualitative case study of a teaching intervention in which a pre-service subject teacher pair planned and conducted a course integrating Finnish language and ethics in a multilingual setting. Audio-recorded planning sessions and interviews including learning diaries were analysed using qualitative content analysis to identify the dynamics of collaborative cross-curricular pedagogical practice development and pedagogical language knowledge. The analysis revealed tensions in crossing the boundary between language and content knowledge. The study suggests that when creating cross-curricular practices, student teachers benefit from longer-term processes and theory-base…

Lastentarhanopettajaopiskelijoiden kokemuksia erilaisista pedagogisista lähestymistavoista koulutuksen sisällöissä

2014

Varhaiskasvatussuunnitelman perusteissa (2005) erilaiset pedagogiset lähestymistavat on nostettu omaksi luvukseen. Varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilaisilta voidaan siis odottaa aiheen tuntemusta. Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin lastentarhanopettajaopiskelijoiden kokemuksia erilaisten pedagogisten lähestymistapojen käsittelystä koulutuksen sisällöissä. Kyseisistä lähestymistavoista tutkimukseen valittiin Reggiolainen lähestymistapa, Steinerpedagogiikka, Freinet-pedagogiikka sekä Montessoripedagogiikka. Tutkimuksessa haettiin vastauksia seuraaviin tutkimuskysymyksiin; Miten riittävänä opiskelijat kokivat saamansa tiedon määrän koskien erilaisia pedagogisia lähestymistapoja? Missä ja mitä tietoa op…
