Large-N kinetic theory for highly occupied systems

We consider an effective kinetic description for quantum many-body systems, which is not based on a weak-coupling or diluteness expansion. Instead, it employs an expansion in the number of field components N of the underlying scalar quantum field theory. Extending previous studies, we demonstrate that the large-N kinetic theory at next-to-leading order is able to describe important aspects of highly occupied systems, which are beyond standard perturbative kinetic approaches. We analyze the underlying quasiparticle dynamics by computing the effective scattering matrix elements analytically and solve numerically the large-N kinetic equation for a highly occupied system far from equilibrium. Coupling of electromembrane processes with reverse osmosis for seawater desalination: Pilot plant demonstration and testing

Reverse osmosis (RO) is the most widespread technology to produce drinking water from seawater (SW). However, the integration of different membrane processes offers interesting alternatives. In this work, electromembrane processes were integrated with RO to desalinate real seawater in a pilot plant with 25 m3/day capacity. Electrodialysis (ED, either two-stage or single stage), shortcut reverse electrodialysis (scRED) and assisted reverse electrodialysis (ARED) pre-desalinated seawater before RO with the ED-ED-RO, ED-RO, and scRED-ARED-RO process schemes. CFD predictions of the effects of a fiber bundle porosity on shell-side hydrodynamics and mass transfer under conditions of steady laminar flow were obtained. Fluid was assumed to flow around regular hexag-onal or square arrays of cylindrical fibers of different pitch to diameter ratios, yielding bundle porosities ranging from the theoretical minimum up to similar to 1.
