Physical and hydraulic characterization of a clay soil at the plot scale

Summary The soil physical and hydraulic properties have to be determined for interpreting and simulating many hydrological processes. An investigation was carried out to determine the physical and hydraulic characteristics of a clay soil at the plot scale. An intensive sampling of the surface soil layer of two plots of 4 × 11 m2 was carried out by measuring, for each plot, dry soil bulk density, ρb, and antecedent soil water content, θi, at 88 sampling points and field-saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Kfs, at 176 sampling points. Empirical determination of the average annual runoff coefficient in the Mediterranean area

Runoff estimation in ungauged basin is a challenge for the hydrological engineers and planners. For an y hydrological study on an ungauged basin, a methodology has to be appropriately selected for the determination of runoff at its outlet. Several meth ods have been used to estimate the basin runoff production. In this study the empirical Kennessey m ethod to determine average annual runoff coefficien t, RC, is tested on 61 Sicilian basins characterized b y different climate conditions, surface permeabilit y, mean slope and vegetation cover. Applying the bootstrap technique for studying soil redistribution by caesium-137 measurements at basin scale

Abstract The use of the bootstrap technique to estimate the reference level of137 Cs in an uneroded site is tested. The analysis is developed using 137Cs measurements made in a small experimental Sicilian basin. In the reference area the 137Cs activity is normally distributed with a known sample mean value, m equal to 94.4 mBq cm−2. Occurrence of fumonisins in organic and conventional cereal-based products commercialized in France, Germany and Spain

A fast and effective method for quantitative determination of fumonisins B1 and B2 (FB1 and FB2) in different cereal-based products was developed. Fumonisins were extracted combining a solid liquid extraction (SLE) pre-treatment and immunoaffinity columns (IACs), which were applied for an effective clean-up. Consecutively, high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometer (QTrap®) was used for the separation, detection and quantification of targeted mycotoxins. Literacy skills seem to fuel literacy enjoyment, rather than vice versa

Children who like to read and write tend to be better at it. This association is typically interpreted as enjoyment impacting engagement in literacy activities, which boosts literacy skills. We fitted direction-of-causation models to partial data of 3690 Finnish twins aged 12. Literacy skills were rated by the twins' teachers and literacy enjoyment by the twins themselves. A bivariate twin model showed substantial genetic influences on literacy skills (70%) and literacy enjoyment (35%). In both skills and enjoyment, shared-environmental influences explained about 20% in each.
