Effects of Mangifera indica L. aqueous extract (Vimang) on primary culture of rat hepatocytes.

2007

Abstract Vimang is an aqueous extract from stem bark of Mangifera indica L. (Mango) with pharmacological properties. It is a mixture of polyphenols (as main components), terpenoids, steroids, fatty acids and microelements. In the present work we studied the cytotoxic effects of Vimang on rat hepatocytes, possible interactions of the extract with drug-metabolizing enzymes and its effects on GSH levels and lipid peroxidation. No cytotoxic effects were observed after 24 h exposure to Vimang of up to 1000 μg/mL, while a moderate cytotoxicity was observed after 48 and 72 h of exposure at higher concentrations (500 and 1000 μg/mL). The effect of the extract (50–400 μg/mL) on several P450 isozymes…

Antispasmodic Effects and Structure−Activity Relationships of Labdane Diterpenoids from Marrubium globosum ssp. libanoticum

2009

Marrubium globosum ssp. libanoticum is a medicinal plant used in Lebanon to reduce pain and smooth muscle spasms. A chloroform extract obtained from M. globosum aerial parts reduced acetylcholine-induced contractions in the isolated mouse ileum. The purification of this extract identified, among 12 isolated labdane diterpenoids, four new compounds, named 13-epicyllenin A (4), 13,15-diepicyllenin A (5), marrulibacetal (9), and marrulactone (11). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods. Compound 9, which exerted antispasmodic activity, is likely the active ingredient of the extract. Preliminary structure-activity relationships for this class of compounds are suggested.

Phytochemical and pharmacological studies on the acetonic extract of Marrubium globosum ssp. libanoticum

2006

A new natural labdane diterpene, marrulibanoside, was isolated from the acetonic extract of aerial parts of M. globosum Montbr. et Auch. ex Benth. ssp. libanoticum Boiss. (Lamiaceae). Its structure was determined by spectroscopic methods such as 1D and 2D NMR and mass spectrometry. Pharmacological studies have shown that the extract of M. globosum exerts anti-inflammatory effects in the rat paw oedema induced by carrageenin resulting in reduced paw swelling. This activity, which seems due to marrulibanoside, is a consequence of iNOS and COX-2 activities inhibition.

2,9-Dimethylpicene: Synthesis, Mutagenic Activity, and Identification in Natural Samples

1990

Abstract 2,9-Dimethylpicene (2,9-DMPic) has been conveniently synthesized via a new route involving oxidative photocyclization of suitable substituted diarylethylenes and has been characterized by high-resolution 400-MHz 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, 2,9-DMPic exhibits a typical line narrowed emission spectrum in n-decane matrix frozen at 15 K (Shpol'skii effect). Its unambiguous identification in a natural sample has been performed by this technique, providing strong evidence for the formation of this compound through aromatization of triterpenoid natural precursors. The mutagenicity of this naturally occurring methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) has been examined in six h…

Stability of biogenic metal(loid) nanomaterials related to the colloidal stabilization theory of chemical nanostructures

2018

In the last 15 years, the exploitation of biological systems (i.e. plants, bacteria, mycelial fungi, yeasts, and algae) to produce metal(loid) (Me)-based nanomaterials has been evaluated as eco-friendly and a cost-effective alternative to the chemical synthesis processes. Although the biological mechanisms of biogenic Me-nanomaterial (Bio-Me-nanomaterials) production are not yet completely elucidated, a key advantage of such bio-nanostructures over those chemically synthesized is related to their natural thermodynamic stability, with several studies ascribed to the presence of an organic layer surrounding these Bio-Me-nanostructures. Different macromolecules (e.g. proteins, peptides, lipids…

Biological Profiling of Semisynthetic C19-Functionalized Ferruginol and Sugiol Analogues

2021

[EN] The abietane-type diterpenoids are significant bioactive compounds exhibiting a varied range of pharmacological properties. In this study, the first synthesis and biological investigation of the new abietane-diterpenoid (+)-4-epi-liquiditerpenoid acid (8a) together with several of its analogs are reported. The compounds were generated from the readily available methyl callitrisate (7), which was obtained from callitrisic acid present in Moroccan Sandarac resin. A biological evaluation was conducted to determine the effects of the different functional groups present in these molecules, providing basic structure-activity relationship (SAR) elements. In particular, the ferruginol and sugi…

The genus Centaurea is recognized in folk medicine for anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, antitussive, purgative, astringent, and tonic activities. To study the chemical determinant for antimicrobial activity essential oils (EOs), five Centaurea species were analyzed including: C. scoparia, C. calcitrapa, C. glomerata, C. lipii and C. alexandrina. Conventional hydro-distillation (HD) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), as new green technologies, were compared for the extraction of essential oils. GC/MS analysis identified 120 EOs including mostly terpenoid except from C. lipii and C. alexandrina in which nonterpenoids were the major constituents. Major terpenoids included spathulenol, caryo…

Pursaethosides A-E, triterpene saponins from Entada pursaetha.

2005

Five new triterpenoid saponins, pursaethosides A-E (1-5), were isolated from the n-BuOH extract of the seed kernels of Entada pursaetha along with the known phaseoloidin. The structures of 1-5 were elucidated mainly by spectroscopic data interpretation and chemical degradation. Pursaethosides C-E (3-5) possess as a common structural feature entagenic acid as aglycon, which is rare among triterpene saponins. Compounds 2-4 and phaesolidin were found to be not cytotoxic when tested against HCT 116 and HT-29 human colon cancer cells.

Information entropy-based classification of triterpenoids and steroids from Ganoderma

2015

Abstract A set of 71 triterpenoid and steroid compounds from Ganoderma were periodically classified using a procedure based on information entropy with artificial intelligence. Six features were used in hierarchical order to classify the triterpenoids and steroids structurally. The phytochemicals belonging to the same group in the periodic table present similar antioxidant activity, and those compounds belonging to the same period exhibit maximum resemblance. The periodic classification is related to the experimental bioactivity and antioxidant potency data that are available in the literature: a steroid with a three-ketone group conjugated with two carbon–carbon double bonds in the right s…

Molecular composition and chemotaxonomic aspects of Eocene amber from the Ameki Formation, Nigeria

2012

The molecular composition of fossil resin from the Eocene Ameki Formation, southern Nigeria has been analyzed by infrared spectroscopy, pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and thermochemolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry to determine the structural class and botanical source of the resin. The pyrolysis products were dominated by bicyclic products derived from regular labdatriene structure and lacked succinic acid indicating Class Ib type amber. The biomarker compositions in the pyrolysates are dominated by sesquiterpenoids of the cadinane and bisabolane classes that are common constituents of higher plants and labdane type diterpenoids. The exclusive presence of labdane …
