Music, gender and rituals in the Ancient Mediterranean: revisiting the Punic evidence

2012

Abstract Music, playing instruments and performing rituals are bodily activities and as such they can be studied stressing their corporeal features. Music and sounds are usually essential elements in rites, and bodies play an essential role in bringing together music and rituals. We explore these issues focusing on Punic terracotta figurines playing musical instruments recovered from the island of Ibiza (fifth to third centuries bc).

The Use of Facial Characteristics as Engendering Strategies in Phoenician-Punic Studies

2016

Facial characteristics such as discs on cheeks or exaggerated chins have been traditionally used to interpret Phoenician-Punic materials as representing either females or males. Beards and pointed chins, for instance, have been considered male attributes for terracotta masks, while disks have been interpreted as feminine makeup when present on figurines and ostrich eggshells. However, problems and even paradoxes of interpretation emerge when such characteristics appear on objects already (and perhaps arbitrarily) alternately gendered male or female. Thus, the cosmetic disks on “feminine” figurines become “warts” and “astral symbols” when appearing on “male” masks. Such conundrums show how s…

The production of terracotta figurines in the city of Augustodunum. Presentation of the latest research.

2018

Dioniso a Centuripe: iconografia ‘teatrale’ e imagerie dionisiaca in contesto funerario

2021

The purpose of the paper is to bring together and to assess some strands of the funerary imagery elaborated in Centuripe (Sicily) in 3rd-1st centuries B.C., that until recently have been viewed in total isolation from each other. Dionysian themes and motifs have been variously identified in the local polychrome pottery, since the discovery, early in 20th century, of two impressive vases representing Dionysos himself in a relaxed pose; as opposed to the prevailing “bacchic-orphic” explanation, however, from the second half of past century the nuptial theme was considered to be the most important of the Centuripan vase inventory; finally, some scholars have argued that the repertory was not s…

2017

Classical Archeology Clashing with the World of Diplomacy: the Case of Salomon Reinach in 1881 Studies on the ties between archeology and diplomacy focus mostly on the way a few individuals reconciled a double career and realized the ideal of a hybrid figure: the diplomat as archeologist. Less attention has been paid to the relations, on a daily basis, between classical archeology and the world of consulates and embassies in the Eastern Mediterranean. Most of the time, one relies on the widespread cliché of the archeologist as a victim of bureaucracy. The case studied here is that of Salomon Reinach (1858-1932) and his abundant correspondence, held by the bibliothèque Méjanes (Aix-en-Proven…

Assessing the territorial influence of an Iberian worship site. The chemical characterisation of the terracotta from the Iron Age sanctuary of La Ser…

2017

This paper presents the study of the prestigious terracotta votive figurines from the Iberian Iron Age sanctuary of La Serreta (Alicante province, Spain) composed of 174 items. Portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) was used to identify elemental markers that permit us to observe the differences between local and non-local terracotta figurines and furthermore to evaluate the geographical influence of the La Serreta sanctuary using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLSDA) statistical method was also used to classify the figurines of uncertain geographical origin. The resulting groups were related to typological and stylistic groups of figurines …
