A Tire Model for Off-Highway Vehicle Simulation on Short Wave Irregular Terrain
2010
Manufacturers of construction machinery are challenged in several ways concerning dynamic loads. Considering off-highway dump trucks that travel through high amplitude short wave irregular terrain with considerable speed two aspects concerning dynamics are important. The first is the legal requirements that prescribe the maximum limit on the vibration exposure on the operator which is a measure for ride comfort. The second is the importance of knowing the dynamic loading of the structural parts. In order to use the wide variety of computer-aided design tools to size and optimize mechanical joints, spring-damper elements and the welded structures it is crucial to have information on the time h…
Adding Synthetic Detail to Natural Terrain Using a Wavelet Approach
2002
Terrain representation is a basic topic in the field of interactive graphics. The amount of data required for good quality terrain representation offers an important challenge to developers of such systems. For users of these applications the accuracy of geographical data is less important than their natural visual appearance. This makes it possible to mantain a limited geographical data base for the system and to extend it generating synthetic data.In this paper we combine fractal and wavelet theories to provide extra data which keeps the natural essence of actual information available. The new levels of detail(LOD) for the terrain are obtained applying an inverse Wavelet Transform (WT) to…
Evaluation of different InSAR multi-baseline construction methods over a dam in southern Italy
2018
Monitoring dam displacements using different techniques allows an evaluation of their structural behaviour over time. In this study, dam displacements (for the Castello dam, Agrigento, Italy) have been investigated using different Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) techniques exploiting a freely available dataset from the EU Copernicus Sentinel-1 SAR built by the European Space Agency (ESA). The dataset includes Sentinel 1A (S1A) images acquired in dual-polarization and Interferometric Wide (IW) swath using the Terrain Observation with Progressive Scans SAR (TOPSAR) mode. Three main Multi-Baseline Construction methods based on the identification of Persistent Scatterers (PS) h…
A Novel Self-organizing Neural Technique for Wind Speed Mapping
2009
Systems with high nonlinearities are, in general, very difficult to model. This is particularly true in geostatistics, where the problem of the estimation of a regionalized variable (RV) given only a small amount of measurement stations and a complex terrain surface is very challenging. This paper introduces a novel strategy, which couples the Curvilinear Component Analysis (CCA) and the Generalized Mapping Regressor (GMR). CCA, which is a nonlinear projector of a data manifold, is here used in order to find the intrinsic dimension of the data manifold, just giving an insight on the nonlinearities of the problem. This analysis drives the pre-processing of the data set used for the training …
Heavy Gas Dispersion Modelling Over a Topographically Complex Mesoscale: A CFD Based Approach
2005
Abstract: Potentially dangerous events involving heavy gas dispersion and their severe consequences have been largely publicized by the media. Simplified models have been widely applied to describe the effects of these accidents. However, most simplified models deal with flat terrain scenarios and are based on quite crude simplifications of the complex phenomenology involved. In this paper the possibility of simulating the dispersion of heavy gas clouds over a large topographically complex area (tens of km) by a general purpose computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code is investigated. The aim is that of setting up a tool able to produce a realistic description of such dispersion processes, w…
Interactive Terrain Simulation and Force Distribution Models in Sand Piles
2006
This paper presents an application of Cellular Automata in the field of dry Granular Systems modelling While the study of granular systems is not a recent field, no efficient models exist, from a computational point of view, in classical methodologies Some previous works showed that the use of Cellular Automata is suitable for the development of models that can be used in real time applications This paper extends the existing Cellular Automata models in order to make them interactive A model for the reaction to external forces and a pressure distribution model are presented and analyzed, with numerical examples and simulations.

A Rough-Terrain Casting Robot for the ESA Lunar Robotics Challenge
2009
This paper describes the design and implementation of DAVID, a lunar vehicle developed for the European Space Agency (ESA) Lunar Robotics Challenge, presenting severe terrain negotiation and sample acquisition challenges. We discuss in some detail two of the main innovative aspects of our entry to the challenge, i.e. the locomotion system and the sample acquisition system. Motivated by the challenge specifications, a range of different locomotion systems were considered, among which we chose a simple, rugged and effective wheeled system. We provide an account of the choice of five different types of wheels, which were designed, analyzed and experimentally tested in conditions similar to the…
Small Wind Technology Diffusion in Suburban Areas of Sicily
2015
Among renewable energy resources, wind energy became more attractive in the last decade. Wind farm installations dramatically increased in areas where climatic conditions, topography, and environment have allowed their development. The installation of wind turbines, usually carried out in remote areas, recently began to cover areas identified by a complex terrain such as urban and suburban zones. Although these new plant choices are characterized by lower productivity, there is increasing interest in wind energy production in both urban and suburban areas. In this work the authors have carried out an energy analysis developed from a sample of small wind turbines available on the market. Thi…
