Exotic Ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) Invading Mediterranean Europe: a Brief Summary over About 200 Years of Documented Introductions
2019
Exotic ants have emerged as a relevant topic worldwide because of their remarkable impacts on native ecosystems and human activities. A first regional overview is given on the dozens of exotic ant species recorded in Mediterranean Europe since the end of the 19th century. About 39 exotic ant species, belonging to 17 genera and originating from 5 different biogeographical realms, are currently believed to be established in this region. The genera Nylanderia and Tetramorium are those hosting the larger proportion of species, while the Afrotropical realm is the prevalent source of taxa. According to the available data, France, Greece, Italy and Spain all host a high number of exotic species, w…
Individual and Environmental Determinants of Daily Black Grouse Nest Survival Rates at Variable Predator Densities
2010
Nest predation in ground nesting black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) inhabiting managed boreal forests is arguably the single most important cause of nesting failure. Little is known, however, about indirect effects of other factors, such as maternal or environmental properties, and to what extent maternal and habitat qualities interact with varying levels of predator densities. Using an information-theoretical approach, we studied maternal and environmental determinants of daily nest survival rates under variable predator densities of 210 individual black grouse hens in central Finland. Environmental determinants were far more important than maternal ones, and the effects were more apparent at hi…
Paternity, copulation disturbance and female choice in lekking black grouse
1996
Female copulation behaviour in the black grouse, Tetrao tetrix, was studied by detailed observations of individually marked birds together with DNA fingerprinting analyses for paternity assessment. For each breeding occasion females typically mated only once with one male, and did not mate outside the lek arena. They re-mated with the same or another male usually only if the initial copulation was disturbed and was probably unsuccessful in sperm transfer. The willingness of females to copulate only once with one male suggests that multiple mating with several males incurs a cost that more than outweighs any possible fertility or sperm competition benefits. Attempts by neighbouring males to …
Data from: Genetic and ecotypic differentiation in a Californian plant polyploid complex (Grindelia, Asteraceae)
2015
Studies of ecotypic differentiation in the California Floristic Province have contributed greatly to plant evolutionary biology since the pioneering work of Clausen, Keck, and Hiesey. The extent of gene flow and genetic differentiation across interfertile ecotypes that span major habitats in the California Floristic Province is understudied, however, and is important for understanding the prospects for local adaptation to evolve or persist in the face of potential gene flow across populations in different ecological settings. We used microsatellite data to examine local differentiation in one of these lineages, the Pacific Coast polyploid complex of the plant genus Grindelia (Asteraceae). W…
On the nature of organic electron density transfer complexes within molecular electron density theory.
2019
The structural features of a series of organic molecular complexes formed between the strong electrophilic tetracyanoethylene and twelve benzene derivatives with increased nucleophilic character, herein called Electron Density Transfer Complexes (EDTCs), have been studied using Molecular Electron Density Theory. The favourable nucleophilic/electrophilic interactions, which favour the global electron density transfer (GEDT) towards the electrophile, are responsible for the formation of these species. Molecular complexes presenting a GEDT above 0.05e are classified as EDTCs. Analysis of the Parr functions of the separated reagents and the topological analysis of the electron density of the ED…
How does the global electron density transfer diminish activation energies in polar cycloaddition reactions? A Molecular Electron Density Theory study
2017
Abstract The key role of the Global Electron Density Transfer (GEDT) in polar cycloaddition reactions is analysed within the Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT) using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations at the MPWB1K/6-311G(d) computational level. A comparative MEDT study of the non-polar Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene (Cp) and ethylene and the polar Diels-Alder reaction between Cp and tetracyanoethylene makes it possible to establish that the GEDT taking place in the direction of the transition state structures favours the bonding changes required for the formation of the new C C single bonds along polar cycloaddition reactions. Analysis of the reactivity indice…
Theoretical study of the molecular structure and the stability of neutral and reduced tetracyanoethylene
2003
Abstract The molecular structure and the stability of neutral, anionic, and dianionic tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) have been studied with MP2, coupled-cluster (CC), and density functional theory (DFT) procedures. The optimized geometries are in agreement with the available experimental data, although significant deviations for the CN bond distance have been obtained at the MP2 level. The adiabatic electron affinity of TCNE calculated with the B3LYP method is overestimated by 0.32 eV. In the light of the CC results, the source of such an overestimation is suggested to lie on the theoretical approach, rather than on a too low experimental value.
Nature of the ring-closure process along the rearrangement of octa-1,3,5,7-tetraene to cycloocta-1,3,5-triene from the perspective of the electron lo…
2011
We analyze the behavior of the energy profile of the ring-closure process for the transformation of (3Z,5Z)-octa-1,3,5,7-tetraene 5 to (1Z,3Z,5Z)-cycloocta-1,3,5-triene 6 through a combination of electron localization function (ELF) and catastrophe theory (CT). From this analysis, concepts such as bond breaking/forming processes, formation/annihilation of lone pairs, and other electron pair rearrangements arise naturally through the reaction progress simply in terms of the different ways of pairing up the electrons. A relationship between the topology and the nature of the bond breaking/forming processes along this rearrangement is reported. The different domains of structural stability of …
Changing the size of a cavity via an electron-transfer: synthesis and reduction of 1,5,22,26-tetraoxa-[5,5]-(2,8)-dibenzo[a,e]cylooctatetraenophane
1989
Abstract The synthesis and electron transfer reactions of the title compound, the first macrocycle incorporating two cyclooctatetraene units, are described.
Preconcentration and speciation of chromium in waters using solid-phase extraction and atomic absorption spectrometry
2000
Abstract A method for the preconcentration and speciation of chromium was developed. After formation of an anionic compound with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (CrY − ), Cr (VI) and Cr (III) are retained on a strong anionic phase (SAX) and controlled elution with 0.5 M NaCl permits their speciation. The retention and elution conditions were optimised, and interferences due to the presence of other ions such as Mg(II), Mn(II), Sn(II), Fe(III), Ba(II), Al(III), Ca(II), chloride, iodine, bromide, fluoride, sulphate, phosphate, bicarbonate and nitrate were studied. The detection limits were 0.4 μg l −1 and 1.1 μg l −1 for Cr(III) and Cr(VI), respectively, and reproducibility was 9%. The result…
