Lower rim arylation of calix[n]arenes with extended perfluorinated domains

Abstract Exhaustive O-arylation of p-tert -butylcalix[ n ]arenes 2 ( n  = 4–8) with an excess of 3-pentadecafluoroheptyl-5-pentafluorophenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole 3 and K 2 CO 3 in refluxing acetonitrile provides an easy entry to a new family of perfluorinated calix[ n ]arenes 1 . The cyclic tetramer furnishes a mixture of cone , partial cone , and 1,2-alternate conformers, while the larger macrocycles afford single products. The structures of all new compounds are substantiated by NMR techniques and MALDI-TOF mass spectral data. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies on the pentamer derivative 1b reveal a distorted cone-in conformation of the calixarene cup.

Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of [Cr2Cu2(bpy)4(ox)5]·2H2O. An oxalato-bridged heterometallic tetramer

A new heterometallic tetramer of formula [Cr2Cu 2(bpy)4(ox)5]·2H2O (1) (bpy=2,2′-bipyridine; ox=oxalate dianion) has been prepared and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements and ESR spectroscopy. The tetranuclear unit in 1 can be viewed as the combination of two terminal [Cr(bpy)2(ox)]- units with a central oxalato-bridged copper(II) dimer. The chromium ions are in a distorted octahedral environment with metal-ligand distances ranging from 1.944(4) to 2.064(5) A. The copper(II) centres lie in an axially distorted octahedron. Optically detected magnetic resonance of triplet states populated by photoexcitation in water-soluble chlorophyll proteins (WSCPs) from Lepidium virginicum has been performed using both absorption and fluorescence detection. Well resolved triplet-singlet (T-S) spectra have been obtained and interpreted in terms of electronic interactions among the four chlorophylls (Chls), forming two dimers in the WSCP tetramer. Localization of the triplet state on a single Chl leads to a redistribution of the oscillator strength in the remaining three Chls of the complex. Water-Soluble Chlorophyll Protein (WSCP) Stably Binds Two or Four Chlorophylls

Water-soluble chlorophyll proteins (WSCPs) of class IIa from Brassicaceae form tetrameric complexes containing one chlorophyll (Chl) per apoprotein but no carotenoids. The complexes are remarkably stable toward dissociation and protein denaturation even at 100 °C and extreme pH values, and the Chls are partially protected against photooxidation. There are several hypotheses that explain the biological role of WSCPs, one of them proposing that they function as a scavenger of Chls set free upon plant senescence or pathogen attack. Abstract This short review paper describes spectroscopic studies on pigment–pigment and pigment–protein interactions of chlorophyll (Chl) a and b bound to the recombinant protein of class IIa water soluble chlorophyll protein (WSCP) from cauliflower. Two Chls form a strongly excitonically coupled open sandwich dimer within the tetrameric protein matrix. In marked contrast to the mode of excitonic coupling of Chl and bacterio-Chl molecules in light harvesting complexes and reaction centers of all photosynthetic organisms, the unique structural pigment array in the Chl dimer of WSCP gives rise to an upper excitonic state with a large oscillator strength. Exciton Interactions and Femtosecond Relaxation in Chlorophyll a−Water and Chlorophyll a−Dioxane Aggregates

Chlorophyll a (Chl a) in hydrocarbon solution with a small amount of dioxane or water shows red-shifted absorption bands at 686 nm and at 700 nm (dioxane) and at 745 nm (water), indicative of self-organized aggregate structures in solution. To study the relationship between the structure and spectral properties of the aggregates, several one-dimensional model structures of Chl a−dioxane and Chl a−water aggregates were computed by the molecular mechanics method.
