Analysis and design of sequencing rules for car sequencing
2009
Abstract This paper presents novel approaches for generating sequencing rules for the car sequencing (CS) problem in cases of two and multiple processing times per station. The CS problem decides on the succession of different car models launched down a mixed-model assembly line. It aims to avoid work overloads at the stations of the line by applying so-called sequencing rules, which restrict the maximum occurrence of labor-intensive options in a subsequence of a certain length. Thus to successfully avoid work overloads, suitable sequencing rules are essential. The paper shows that the only existing rule generation approach leads to sequencing rules which misclassify feasible sequences. We …

Reducing the Human Effort in Text Line Segmentation for Historical Documents
2021
Labeling the layout in historical documents for preparing training data for machine learning techniques is an arduous task that requires great human effort. A draft of the layout can be obtained by using a document layout analysis (DLA) system that later can be corrected by the user with less effort than doing it from scratch. We research in this paper an iterative process in which the user only supervises and corrects the given draft for the pages automatically selected by the DLA system with the aim of reducing the required human effort. The results obtained show that similar DLA quality can be achieved by reducing the number of pages that the user has to annote and that the accumulated h…
On-line assessment of comprehension processes
2009
In this paper we describe a new version of a former paper-and-pencil standardized comprehension test called Test of Comprehension Processes (Vidal-Abarca, Gilabert, Martínez, & Sellés, 2007). The new version has been adapted to a computer-based environment based on the moving window technique. It can be used to assess comprehension strategies of students from fifth to tenth grades (11 to 16 years old). Comprehension strategies are registered on-line using reading times and visits to relevant sections of the text during the question-answering process. Data show that the computerbased version draws similar results to those provided by the paper-and-pencil version. In addition, we identify the…
The Prima Vista Line by Line Research Method
2012
In this article I argue for the justification of an experimental research method in poetry response in English as a foreign language. I claim that to exploit the resources of student readers in a better way, a method is needed to elicit uncensored primary responses that are often lost in the classroom. Unless student readers are allowed to encounter a poem personally and sincerely, and read it line by line, the primary reactions will be lost and language learning through poetry will be hampered. The primary reactions include the readers’ experiences in terms of knowledge of language and poetic devices, in addition to emotional and psychological reactions during the reading of a poem in Engl…
Performance of the First ANTARES Detector Line
2009
In this paper we report on the data recorded with the first Antares detector line. The line was deployed on the 14th of February 2006 and was connected to the readout two weeks later. Environmental data for one and a half years of running are shown. Measurements of atmospheric muons from data taken from selected runs during the first six months of operation are presented. Performance figures in terms of time residuals and angular resolution are given. Finally the angular distribution of atmospheric muons is presented and from this the depth profile of the muon intensity is derived.
A Mediated Tolerance of Violence: An Analysis of Online Newspaper Articles and “Below-the-line” Comments in the Latvian Media
2020
A mediated tolerance of violence: an analysis of online newspaper articles and “below-the-line” comments in the Latvian media This article analyses the framing of tolerance of violence in Latvian newspaper articles published online and the reader response “below-the-line” comments to these and how these frames may negatively present and impact those who suffer violence. It makes visible the language used and concepts employed in such cases where someone supports, justifies, or positively perceives violence. The text is based on qualitative media content analysis of 3,166 documents in the Latvian, Russian and English languages from Latvian news sources online published between 2010 and 2018…
The middle house or the middle floor: Bisecting horizontal and vertical mental number lines in neglect
2007
Abstract This study explores the processing of mental number lines and physical lines in five patients with left unilateral neglect. Three tasks were used: mental number bisection (‘report the middle number between two numbers’), physical line bisection (‘mark the middle of a line’), and a landmark task (‘is the mark on the line to the left/right or higher/lower than the middle of the line?’). We manipulated the number line orientation purely by task instruction: neglect patients were told that the number-pairs represented either houses on a street (horizontal condition) or floors in a building (vertical condition). We also manipulated physical line orientation for comparison. All five negl…
Animation attracts: The attraction effect in an on-line shopping environment
2006
Two studies examine the attraction effect - an inconsistent choice behavior typically observed when consumers are presented with two products (target and competitor), both good for different reasons, and a worse "decoy" - in the context of on-line consumer decisions with different product displays (animated or static). The experiments, with different participant populations, show that the attraction effect in an on-line shopping environment depends on the animation format of the products. Experiment 1 (with Italian participants) suggests that the attraction effect is eliminated when target and competitor are both animated and is accentuated when the target is animated and the competitor is …
Comparing cetacean abundance estimates derived from spatial models and design-based line transect methods
2007
Spatial modelling is increasingly being used as an alternative to conventional design- based line transect sampling to estimate cetacean abundance. This new method combines line transect sampling with spatial analysis to predict animal abundance based on the relationship of ani- mals observed to environmental factors. It presents several advantages including: (1) the ability to use data collected from 'platforms of opportunity', (2) the ability to estimate abundance for any defined subarea within the study area, and (3) the possibility for increased precision if covariates explain sufficient variability in the data. One study has been conducted to compare spatial modelling with conventional…
