In the first decades of the nineteenth century a form of puppet theater was established in Sicily, specialized in the staging of epic-chivalrous events: the opra î pupi (work of the puppets), which has since enjoyed enormous success among the working classes Sicilians. The work of the pupi has the merit of imploding an articulated complex of traditionally formalized competences (from the material to the expressive level) and at the same time reflecting the socio-symbolic values on which until recently the Sicilian popular culture was founded. High levels of manual skills, good visual-motor coordination, excel‐lent imagination and spatial awareness are the main factors determining the success of neurosurgeons. Proficiency in neurosurgical skills used to be acquired through hands-on training in cadaver labs and in real operating theatres under master neurosurgeon supervision. Woodcuts and Some Words: Edward Gordon Craig’s lasting impressions

This article examines Edward Gordon Craig’s analogy between drama and wood engraving, stage and printed page in his autobiographical handbook on wood engraving, Woodcuts and Some Words (1924). Taking as a premise Craig’s interest in the world of print as materialization of his “new theatre”, it explores the semantic shift of the notion of impression from the symbolist realm of suggestion to that of modernist imprint. It finally seeks to determine the significance of engraving in Craig’s career, a medium that was the matrix, the relic and the archive of the images and of the ideal vision he pursued all his life.

This paper is an attempt to present the parallels between Słowacki’s and Miciński’s dramatic works, with an emphasis on the domains that have not yet been compared. It juxtaposes the following aspects: spectacularity, theatricality, and the presence and functioning of meta-theatrical gags. The anticipatory character of Słowacki’s works with respect to the paradigms of modernist culture was noticed as early as by the end of the 19th century. In this article I discuss theatre’s scope of action after the 2011 terror attacks in Norway (“22. July”), with an emphasis on independent theatre, aesthetic heteronomy and the public sphere. A theatre manager’s (Jon Refsdal Moe) retrospect account of and reflections upon a case of self-censoring is the starting point for my (re-)examination of the arguments and dynamics concerning some of the most prominent contentious 22. July performances. I discuss how the controversies can be understood and dealt with, and how they are connected to theatre’s scope of action and place in society today.
