Radial phononic thermal conductance in thin membranes in the Casimir limit: Design guidelines for devices

2014

In a previous publication, we discussed the formalism and some computational results for phononic thermal conduction in the suspended membrane geometry for radial heat flow from a central source, which is a common geometry for some low-temperature detectors, for example. We studied the case where only diffusive surface scattering is present, the so called Casimir limit, which can be experimentally relevant at temperatures below $\sim$ 10 K in typical materials, and even higher for ultrathin samples. Here, we extend our studies to much thinner membranes, obtaining numerical results for geometries which are more typical in experiments. In addition, we interpret the results in terms of a small…

Acoustic characterization of Silica aerogel clamped plates for perfect absorption purpose

2017

International audience; Silica aerogel has been widely studied as bulk material for its extremely low density and thermal conductivity. Plates or membranes made of this extremely soft materials exhibits interesting properties for sound absorption. A novel signal processing method for the characterization of an acoustic metamaterial made of silica aerogel clamped plates is presented. The acoustic impedance of a silica aerogel clamped plate is derived from the elastic theory for the flexural waves, while the transfer matrix method is used to model reflection and transmission coefficients of a single plate. Experimental results are obtained by using an acoustic impedance tube. The difference b…

Temperature Measurements as a Method for Monitoring Ropes

2020

Due to an increasing demand for operation at sea depths as low as 3000 m and under, the use of fibre ropes for offshore application in deep sea lifting and mooring is increasing. Consequently, improved knowledge is required regarding these ropes’ thermo-mechanical properties and how these properties change as the rope is being used. This paper presents a 2D model of heat transport in the axial and radial directions along a 28 mm diameter fibre rope typically used for offshore applications. The model is combined with temperature measurements during heating and cooling of the rope, using both thermocouples and a thermal camera. Measurements are performed both on a new rope and on a used that …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations

2003

A tutorial introduction to the technique of Molecular Dynamics (MD) is given, and some characteristic examples of applications are described. The purpose and scope of these simulations and the relation to other simulation methods is discussed, and the basic MD algorithms are described. The sampling of intensive variables (temperature T, pressure p) in runs carried out in the microcanonical (NVE) ensemble (N= particle number, V = volume, E = energy) is discussed, as well as the realization of other ensembles (e.g. the NVT ensemble). For a typical application example, molten SiO2, the estimation of various transport coefficients (self-diffusion constants, viscosity, thermal conductivity) is d…

Charge-Induced Deformation of the 4He Solid-Superfluid Interface

1984

The interface between solid and superfluid 4He has revealed unusual dynamic properties. Characteristic of this quantum system are the very high thermal conductivity of the superfluid phase, and an extremely small heat of fusion below temperatures of about 1 K. As a result, equilibrium at the solid-superfluid 4He interface is established quite rapidly, which gives rise, e.g., to melting — crystallization waves [1,2] — similar in appearance to surface waves on a free liquid surface — and to anomalous transmission of sound [3].

Heat transport of helium II in restricted geometries

1979

The linear heat transport of helium II contained in porous powder samples with mean pore diameters of 1.25µm, 0.17µm and 0.02µm was systematically studied in the temperature range between 0.8 K and 2 K. The effective thermal conductivity was determined by steady-state heat flow measurements and the effective thermal diffusivity by transitory temperature measurements. The experimental results are interpreted by a simple theoretical model. In the framework of this model the linear heat transport consists of two contributions: the laminar flow of the normal fluid (T≳1.4 K) and a diffusion mechanism (T≲1.4 K). At low temperatures (T≲1.2 K) the mean free paths of the elementary excitations of he…

Thermal Diffusion and Partial Molar Enthalpy Variations of n-Butane in Silicalite-1

2008

International audience; We report for the first time the heat of transfer and the Soret coefficient for n-butane in silicalite-1. The heat of transfer was typically 10 kJ/mol. The Soret coefficient was typically 0.006 K−1 at 360 K. Both varied with the temperature and the concentration. The thermal conductivity of the crystal with butane adsorbed was 1.46 ±0.07 W/Km. Literature values of the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption, the concentration at saturation, and the diffusion coefficients were reproduced. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were used to find these results, and a modified heat exchange algorithm, Soft-HEX, was developed for the purpose. Enthalpies of butane were al…

High resolution remote estimation of soil surface water content by a thermal inertia approach

2009

Summary The spatial distribution of soil surface water content in a bare soil was evaluated by a thermal inertia approach from high resolution visible/near infrared (VIS/NIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) airborne data. Given that the relationship between the thermal inertia and the soil water content strongly depends on the accurate estimation of the soil thermal conductivity, two different empirical models were applied to estimate it. Remotely estimated water contents were tested with time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements collected on a 110 × 90 m 2 bare field in coincidence with airborne over-flights. The thermal conductivity model by Johansen (1975) produced more accurate estimates …

Tetragonal tungsten bronzes Nb8−xW9+xO47−δ: optimization strategies and transport properties of a new n-type thermoelectric oxide

2015

Engineering of nanoscaled structures may help controlling the electrical and thermal transport in solids, in particular for thermoelectric applications that require the combination of low thermal conductivity and low electrical resistivity. The tetragonal tungsten bronzes Nb8−xW9+xO47 (TTB) allow a continuous variation of the charge carrier concentration while fulfilling at the same time the concept of a “phonon-glass electron-crystal” through a layered nanostructure defined by intrinsic crystallographic shear planes. The thermoelectric properties of the tetragonal tungsten bronzes Nb8−xW9+xO47−δ (0 < x < 2) were studied in the temperature range from 373 to 973 K. Structural defects and the…

Tailoring of the electrical and thermal properties using ultra-short period non-symmetric superlattices

2016

Thermoelectric modules based on half-Heusler compounds offer a cheap and clean way to create eco-friendly electrical energy from waste heat. Here we study the impact of the period composition on the electrical and thermal properties in non-symmetric superlattices, where the ratio of components varies according to (TiNiSn):(HfNiSn), and 0 n 6 unit cells. The thermal conductivity () showed a strong dependence on the material content achieving a minimum value for n = 3, whereas the highest value of the figure of merit ZT was achieved for n = 4. The measured can be well modeled using non-symmetric strain relaxation applied to the model of the series of thermal resistanc…
