Photothermal excitation setup for a modified commercial atomic force microscope
2014
High-resolution imaging in liquids using frequency modulation atomic force microscopy is known to suffer from additional peaks in the resonance spectrum that are unrelated to the cantilever resonance. These unwanted peaks are caused by acoustic modes of the liquid and the setup arising from the indirect oscillation excitation by a piezoelectric transducer. Photothermal excitation has been identified as a suitable method for exciting the cantilever in a direct manner. Here, we present a simple design for implementing photothermal excitation in a modified Multimode scan head from Bruker. Our approach is based on adding a few components only to keep the modifications as simple as possible and …
Experimental investigation of the cutting temperature when turning with coated indexable inserts
1999
Abstract This paper deals with an experimental investigation into the different factors which influence the temperature which occur at the coating/substrate–chip interface when machining a medium carbon steel and an austenitic stainless steel. Both flat-faced and grooved inserts coated with TiC, TiC/TiN and TiC/Al 2 O 3 /TiN were used. A standard K-type thermocouple embedded in the workpiece was used to convert measured efms to the interfacial temperature. Some optimal coating structures for high speed machining of these steels corresponding to the minimum interface temperature were selected. In particular, it was observed that by the proper selection of the thermal properties of the coatin…
The role of coatings in controlling the cutting process when turning with coated indexable inserts
1998
Abstract This paper is concerned with the variations in the specific cutting pressure and the tool–chip interface temperature that occur when machining a medium carbon steel and an austenitic stainless steel with TiC-, TiC/TiN- and TiC/Al2O3/TiN- coated inserts. Extensive experimental studies involving the cutting force and the interface temperature were performed. A standard thermocouple embedded in the workpiece was used to determine the cutting temperature. Two new parameters were introduced in order to compare both the mechanical and thermal loadings of the tool–chip contact for coated flat-faced and grooved inserts. Some optimal coating structures for high speed machining of these stee…
Study of Coating/Work Material Interaction in Turning with Chip Forming Inserts
1997
This paper presents some interesting and novel results of an experimental study on the influence of the coating structure on the behaviour of the tribo-contact between the tool and the chip. The experiments involved TiC, TiC/TiN and TiC/Al2O3/TiN — coated flat-faced and grooved inserts in conjunction with a medium carbon steel and an austenitic stainless steel. Extensive experimental studies involving the cutting force and the tool-chip interface temperature were carried out. Two new parameters were introduced in order to compare both the mechanical and thermal loadings of the tool-chip contact for the two shapes of the rake face. Some optimal coating structures for high speed machining of …
Atomic layer deposition of Ti-Nb-O thin films onto electrospun fibers for fibrous and tubular catalyst support structures
2018
Here, the authors report on the preparation of core-shell carbon-ceramic fibrous as well as ceramic tubular catalyst supports utilizing electrospinning and atomic layer deposition (ALD). In this paper, ALD of Ti-Nb-O thin films using TiCl4, Nb(OEt)5, and H2O as precursors is demonstrated. According to the time-of-flight-elastic recoil detection analysis and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, carbon and hydrogen impurities were relatively low, but depend on the pulsing ratio of the precursors. Optimized ALD process was used for coating of sacrificial electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) template fibers to yield tubular Ti-Nb-O structures after thermal or solution based PVA removal. Anoth…
Optical and Vibrational Spectra of CsCl-Enriched GeS2-Ga2S3 Glasses
2016
Optical and FTIR spectroscopy was employed to study the properties of 80GeS2-20Ga2S3-CsCl chalcohalide glasses with CsCl additives in a temperature range of 77–293 K. It is shown that CsCl content results in the shift of fundamental absorption edge in the visible region. Vibrational bands in FTIR spectra of (80GeS2-20Ga2S3)100 − х (СsCl) x (x = 5, 10, and 15) are identified near 2500 cm−1, 3700 cm−1,, around 1580 cm−1, and a feature at 1100 cm−1. Low energy shifts of vibrational frequencies in glasses with a higher amount of CsCl can be caused by possible thermal expansion of the lattice and nanovoid agglomeration formed by CsCl additives in the inner structure of the Ge-Ga-S glass.
Thermal and moisture adsorption/desorption properties for a selection of vegetal insulation materials
2019
Natural, or ‘green’ insulation materials, have become more popular for the ‘ecologisation’ of construction activities. The ecological aspects for such materials are being widely analysed, but experimental data about their physical properties when installed in building constructions remains lacking. In this study, pressed samples of three locally wild grown agricultural materials – rye, reed, and hemp – are analysed. Thermal conductivity measurements were carried out using the hot plate device. Comparison with widely used mineral insulation materials shows that thermal conductivity for simple pressed materials are roughly three times higher, and are comparable to plywood and cross-laminated …
Hydrothermal Synthesis of Cobalt Ferrite Nanosized Powders
2015
Cobalt ferrite powders are synthesized by the co-precipitation technology, combined with the hydrothermal synthesis method and crystallite size, specific surface area (SSA), magnetic properties of synthesized products are obtained. All the synthesized ferrites are nanocrystalline single phase materials with crystallite size of 10-16 nm the SSA of 60±5 m2/g and the calculated particle size of 20±2 nm. Synthesized Co ferrites are characterized by the saturation magnetization MS of 59-60 emu/g, remanent magnetization Mr of 23 emu/g and coercivity Hc of 570-650 Oe.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Sn(II) and Sn(IV) Iodide Perovskites and Study of Their Structural, Chemical, Thermal, Optical and Electrical Properties
2019
Phase‐pure CsSnI3, FASnI3, Cs(PbSn)I3, FA(PbSn)I3 perovskites (FA = formamidinium = HC(NH2)2+) as well as the analogous so‐called vacancy‐ordered double perovskites Cs2SnI6 and FA2SnI6 are mechanochemically synthesized. The addition of SnF2 is found to be crucial for the synthesis of Cs‐containing perovskites but unnecessary for hybrid ones. All compounds show an absorption onset in the near‐infrared (NIR) region, which makes them especially relevant for photovoltaic applications. The addition of Pb(II) and SnF2 is crucial to improve the electronic properties in 3D Sn(II)‐based perovskites, in particular their charge carriers mobility (≈0.2 cm2 Vs−1) which is enhanced upon reduction of the …
