Gamma-radiation ageing of a low density polyethylene. Effects of irradiation temperature and dose rate
1993
Abstract Ageing due to gamma radiation of a low density polyethylene at various dose rates and temperatures is studied; the effect of thermal treatment only is also considered. The modifications induced in the molecular and crystallinity behaviour of the polymer are investigated by means of gel extraction, measurements of intrinsic viscosity and thermal analysis. Results indicate the occurrence of both crosslinking and oxidative degradation; the extent of the latter increases on decreasing the irradiation dose rate and on increasing the irradiation temperature. Some exceptions are found because of the increase in the mobility of free radicals at high temperature. These effects modify also t…
Synthesis and properties of aromatic ionenes
1993
Cationic polyelectrolytes with aromatic segments can be synthesized by a repetitive alkylation reaction. The structure of the products, their synthesis and their solubility are described. All ionenes are not, or only in small amounts, water soluble. The best solubility can be achieved by mixtures of polar protic and aprotic solvents. Variations of the counterion produces sufficient solubility in THF. All ionenes show a typical polyelectrolyte effect. The thermal stability of aromatic ionenes and the glass transition temperature is dominated by the nature of the counterion. The molecular weight of oligomers can be described by using a combination of a conductive titration method and an ion s…
Supramolecular Linear-g-Hyperbranched Graft Polymers: Topology and Binding Strength of Hyperbranched Side Chains
2013
Complex, reversible hyperbranched graft polymer topologies have been obtained by spontaneous self-assembly. Well-defined adamantyl- and β-cyclodextrin-functionalized polymers were employed to generate linear-g-(linear–hyperbranched) supramolecular graft terpolymers. For this purpose the synthesis of monoadamantyl-functionalized linear polyglycerols (Ada-linPG) and hyperbranched polyglycerols (Ada-hbPG) as well as poly(ethylene glycol)-block-linear polyglycerol (Ada-PEG-b-linPG) and poly(ethylene glycol)-block-hyperbranched poly(glycerol) (Ada-PEG-b-hbPG) block copolymers was established. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) with β-cyclodextrin revealed a shielding effect of hyperbranched …
Electrically conductive TCNQ complexes of aromatic ionenes
1995
New types of complex salts of 7,7',8,8'-tetracyanoquinodimethane with aromatic ionenes and their model compounds were prepared. The electrical conductivity and the activation energy were measured and discussed in relation to their structure. The effects of the nature of the aromatic unit, and the flexibility and rigidity of the polymer backbone were compared with the corresponding model compounds. The effects of frequency and temperature are discussed in terms of the molecular structure of the complex. The electroconductivity at room temperature of the 1 :1 polymer complex salts was found to be between 2 x 10 -4 and 7 x 10 -5 S/cm, while that of the model complex salts was between 1.3 x 10 …
Generation and transformation of the [3.3.1]propellane skeleton by thermal rearrangements
1994
Abstract In a sequence of unexpected thermal rearrangements the strained monocyclic alkyne 4 is transformed into the tricyclic system 5 which yields in a flash vacuum pyrolysis again a monocyclic compound 10 .
PBI-based composite membranes for polymer fuel cells
2010
Abstract In the present study poly(2,2-(2,6-pyridin)-5,5-bibenzimidazole) was used for the preparation of novel MEAs for high-temperature polymer fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). We prepared hybrid materials with two types of silica fillers in order to increase the MEA performances using this polymer. The membranes were characterized in terms of their microstructure and thermal stability. Cell operation tests and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the MEAs. A maximum power density of about 80 mW cm−2 was obtained at 300 mA cm−2 by using an imidazole-modified silica filler. The EIS technique showed that the fillers chiefly help to reduce the charge transfer r…
Chemical evolution of ore-forming brines – Basement leaching, metal provenance, and the redox link between barren and ore-bearing hydrothermal veins.…
2019
Abstract Six mineralogically exemplary barren and mineralized hydrothermal veins (with Pb and Zn ores) of Jurassic-Cretaceous and Cenozoic age in the Schwarzwald mining district, SW Germany were chosen to shed light on the origin of their mineralogical diversity. The selection of the veins was guided by the fact that they represent the largest number of veins in the region, are very well known mineralogically and geochemically, and they provide nice examples of barren and mineralized veins of similar age. Fluid inclusion data from the individual veins overlap implying their diverse mineralogy is not caused by different fluid compositions participating during fluid mixing. LA-ICPMS data of s…
Counterion-mediated attraction and kinks on loops of semiflexible polyelectrolyte bundles.
2006
The formation of kinks in a loop of bundled polyelectrolyte filaments is analyzed in terms of the thermal fluctuations of charge density due to polyvalent counterions adsorbed on the polyelectrolyte filaments. It is found that the counterion-mediated attraction energy of filaments depends on their bending. By consideration of curvature elasticity energy and counterion-mediated attraction between polyelectrolyte filaments, the characteristic width of the kink and the number of kinks per loop is found to be in reasonable agreement with existing experimental data for rings of bundled actin filaments.
Rheological behaviour, filmability and mechanical properties of biodegradable polymer films
2014
The rheological properties in shear flow and non isothermal elongational flow of two biodegradable polymers, belonging to two different classes of materials, have been measured and compared with those of a film blowing grade high density polyethylene in order to assess the filmability of these polymers. The mechanical properties of isotropic and anisotropic samples have been also reported.
Nanoparticle dynamics in semidilute polymer solutions: Rings versus linear chains
2021
We study the dynamics of nanoparticles in semidilute solutions of ring and linear polymers using hybrid molecular dynamics–multiparticle collision dynamics simulations. The dynamics of the monomers, the polymer centers-of-mass, and the nanoparticles coincide for these two architectures for solutions of the same monomer concentration. The long time diffusivities of the nanoparticles follow the predictions of a polymer coupling theory [Cai et al., Macromolecules 44, 7853–7863 (2011)], suggesting that nanoparticle dynamics are coupled to segmental relaxations for both polymer architectures examined here. At intermediate time scales, the nanoparticle dynamics are characterized by subdiffusive e…
