Hydrothermal circulation on Ischia Island (Southern Italy), revealed by an integrated geochemical, geophysical and geological approach

2011

Volcano-hosted hydrothermal systems are complex geological objects, whose thorough characterisation requires extensive and interdisciplinary work. Indeed, even thought geological, geochemical and geophysical observations offer highly significant but independent information, only an integrated multidisciplinary approach can yield a comprehensive characterisation of the chemical/physical structure of hydrothermal systems. Notwithstanding the extensive application of geological, geochemical and geophysical techniques in geothermal research, there are only a few examples in the literature of concurrent use of the three techniques [Finizola et al., 2002; Zlotnicki et al., 2009]; these studies ov…

Synthesis and characterization of a novel high luminescent gold-2-mercapto-1-methyl-imidazole complex

2010

Synthesis and characterization of a new gold-2-mercapto-1-methyl imidazole are reported. This new organic material shows an extraordinary fluorescence activity (superfluorescence) up to 220°C with an unusual quantum yield of 0.2. Both fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy were applied to understand the behavior of the gold-2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole complex. Results suggest that the superfluorescence activity can be attributed to the shrinking of the HOMO-LUMO band gap energy following complexation of the organic imidazole system with gold. MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING–GUIDED FOCUSED ULTRASOUND THALAMOTOMY IN PATIENT WITH TREMOR COMBINED WITH PARKINSONISM: RETREATMENT AFTER BENEFIT DECAY

2019

Background In recent years, transcranial Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused UltraSounds (tcMRgFUS) treatments for functional neurological disorders are giving a new thrust to the field of therapeutic brain lesioning. This technique has been proven safe and effective in selected patients. Here we present the case of a patient affected by tremor combined with parkinsonism who underwent a second tcMRgFUS thalamotomy because of relapsing tremor after a few months from the first tcMRgFUS treatment. Materials and Methods A 72-year-old, right-handed man, who came to our observation because of a disabling tremor affecting mainly his upper right limb and refusing any invasive surgical procedure. His …

Structural behaviour differences in low methoxy pectin solutions in the presence of divalent cations (Ca 2+ and Zn 2+ ): a process driven by the bind…

2014

International audience; In this paper, we compare the interactions between low methoxy pectin (LMP) and either Ca2+ or Zn2+ in semi-dilute solutions. Intrinsic viscosity and turbidity measurements reveal that pectin-calcium solutions are more viscous, but yet less turbid, than pectin-zinc ones. To get a molecular understanding on the origin of this rather unexpected behavior, we further performed isothermal titration calorimetry, small angle neutron scattering experiments, as well as molecular dynamics simulations. Our results suggest that calcium cations induce the formation of a more homogeneous network of pectin than zinc cations do. The molecular dynamics simulations indicate that this …

Impact of electron beam irradiation on fish gelatin film properties

2016

International audience; The objective of this work was to display the effect of electron beam accelerator doses on properties of plasticized fish gelatin film. Electron spin resonance indicates free radical formation during irradiation, which might induce intermolecular cross-linking. Tensile strength for gelatin film significantly increases after irradiation (improved by 30% for 60 kGy). The vapour permeability is weakly affected by irradiation. Surface tension and its polar component increase significantly and are in accordance with the increase of wettability. So, irradiation may change the orientation of polar groups of gelatin at the film surface and crosslink the hydrophobic amino aci…

Coupling tyrosol, quercetin or ferulic acid and electron beam irradiation to cross-link chitosan–gelatin films: A structure–function approach

2015

International audience; Marine industry by-products, chitosan and fish gelatin, entrapping natural antioxidants (ferulic acid, quercetin and tyrosol) were used to prepare edible active films by casting. The films were composed of chitosan and fish gelatin (1:1 w:w) and incorporating antioxidants (∼50 mg/g). After solvent evaporation (drying), the films were irradiated at 60 kGy by electron beam. This treatment aims at investigating the coupled effect of irradiation with the presence of active compound on the structure and functional properties of the films. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) unravelled free radical formation during irradiation in films containing ferulic acid or tyrosol which fa…

Muscular Strength Imbalances Are not Associated with Skin Temperature Asymmetries in Soccer Players

2020

Although strength imbalances using isokinetic dynamometer have been examined for injury risk screening in soccer players, it is very expensive and time-consuming, making the evaluation of new methods appealing. The aim of the study was to analyze the agreement between muscular strength imbalances and skin temperature bilateral asymmetries as well as skin temperature differences in the hamstrings and quadriceps. The skin temperature of the anterior and posterior thigh of 59 healthy male soccer athletes was assessed at baseline using infrared thermography for the identification of hamstrings-quadriceps skin temperature differences and thermal asymmetries (&gt

Efficient stabilisation of a dihydrogenphosphate tetramer and a dihydrogenpyrophosphate dimer by a cyclic pseudopeptide containing 1,4-disubstituted …

2017

A cyclic pseudooctapeptide 2 is described containing 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole moieties. This compound features eight converging hydrogen bond donors along the ring, namely four amide NH and four triazole CH groups, which enable 2 to engage in interactions with anions. While fully deprotonated sulfate anions exhibit only moderate affinity for 2, protonated anions such as dihydrogenpyrophosphate and dihydrogenphosphate anions are strongly bound. Complexation of the phosphate-derived anions involves sandwiching of a dihydrogenpyrophosphate dimer or a dihydrogenphosphate tetramer between two pseudopeptide rings. X-ray crystallography provided structural information, while 1H NMR spectro…

Testing warm Comptonization models for the origin of the soft X-ray excess in AGNs

2018

The X-ray spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGN) show a soft X-ray excess below 1-2 keV on top of the extrapolated high- energy power law. The origin of this component is uncertain. It could be a signature of relativistically blurred, ionized reflection, or the high-energy tail of thermal Comptonization in a warm (kT $\sim$ 1 keV), optically thick ($\tau\simeq$ 10-20) corona producing the optical/UV to soft X-ray emission. The purpose of the present paper is to test the warm corona model on a statistically significant sample of unabsorbed, radio-quiet AGN with XMM-newton archival data, providing simultaneous optical/UV and X-ray coverage. The sample has 22 objects and 100 observations…
