a b s t r a c t In this work a careful investigation on the degradation of an organically modified montmorillonite sample (Cloisite 15A) thermal treated under different atmospheres, namely nitrogen, air and oxygen enriched atmosphere was performed. The exposure time of the thermal treatment ranged between 5 and 300 min. Thermal Stability and Flame Retardancy of Polypropylene Composites Containing Siloxane-Silsesquioxane Resins

A novel group of silsesquioxane derivatives, which are siloxane-silsesquioxane resins (S4SQ), was for the first time examined as possible flame retardants in polypropylene (PP) materials. Thermal stability of the PP/S4SQ composites compared to the S4SQ resins and neat PP was estimated using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis under nitrogen and in air atmosphere. Preparation, characterization and in vitro test of composites poly-lactic acid/hydroxyapatite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.

Abstract In this work, the possibility to produce composite Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)/Hydroxyapatite (HA) porous scaffolds via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) for bone tissue engineering applications was investigated. Several PLLA/HA wt/wt ratios (95/5, 90/10, 70/30, 50/50, 34/66) were tested and the as-obtained scaffolds were characterized via Scanning Electron Microscopy, Wide Angle X-Ray Diffraction, Thermogravimetric analysis, Gas Pycnometry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and mechanical compression test. Non-isothermal thermogravimetry as an accelerated tool for the shelf-life prediction of paracetamol formulations

Abstract In this work, non-isothermal thermogravimetric studies have been carried out on several paracetamol formulations with the aim to predict their shelf-lives under variable storage conditions. Specifically, paracetamol tablets of different brands have been investigated allowing to estimate their pharmaceutical quality by considering the specific drug stability. Preparation and Characterisation of Alendronate-Loaded Chitosan Microparticles Obtained Through the Spray Drying Technique

Microparticles of chitosan (CHT) containing alendronate sodium (AL) were prepared in four drug:polymer ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:6) using the spray drying technique. The efficiency of the method was evaluated by determining production yield (about 70 %) and microencapsulation efficiency, which was almost 100 % in the case of all four of the formulations studied. Particles had a mean size of between 3.6 and 4.6 microm, and a near-spherical shape. Comparative study of historical woods from XIX century by thermogravimetry coupled with FTIR spectroscopy

Thermal and structural properties of historical woods from apparatuses of the Historical Collection of the Physics Instruments of the University of Palermo have been investigated by FTIR spectroscopy coupled with thermogravimetric analysis. Specifically, the wooden portions of apparatuses from XIX century have been studied. The investigated woods belong to different taxa (Swietenia mahagoni, Picea abies and Juglans regia). Thermal stability and reactivity in oxygen of potassium ferrites with spinel structure

The potassium content really incorporated in the spinel lattice of the magnetite determined by thermogravimetric analysis in vacuum or in oxygen was about 2.45 wt%. In spite of this low content, the potassium strongly stabilises the defect spinel structure resulted by the potassium-substituted magnetite oxidation and increases the transformation temperature of the defect phases into α-Fe2O3 or KFe11O17.

Hierarchical structure and cytocompatibility of fish scales from Carassius auratus

Abstract To study the structure and the cytocompatibility of fish scales from Carassius auratus , scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphology of fish scales treated with different processing methods. Based on varying morphologies and components, the fish scales can be divided into three regions on the surface and three layers in vertical. The functions of these three individual layers were analyzed. SEM results show that the primary inorganic components are spherical or cubic hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles. Water Absorption of Hemp Fibre Nonwovens Modified with Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles

In this paper changes of ability of hemp fibre nonwovens to absorb water after deposition of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles were investigated. Moisture content of samples after storage in different climatic conditions was determined using thermogravimetric method. The obtained results were compared with the results of previous research based on investigation of water absorption of metalized woven fabric of bast fibre. Analysis of measurements showed that nonwoven samples with surface treated in plasma attract water slightly better than sample with untreated surface; this was more pronounced in woven fabric samples. Thermogravimetric behavior of black liquors and their organic constituents

The slow thermal degradation of various black liquors and their organic components (lignin, aliphatic carboxylic acids, extractives and polysaccharides) was investigated by thermogravimetry in the temperature range 25–700 °C under an inert nitrogen atmosphere and at a heating rate of 20 °C/min. Oven-dried samples of pine and birch black liquors from kraft and soda-anthraquinone pulping were tested. Similar tests with black liquor components were carried out both in the absence and in the presence of alkali. In all cases, the mass loss occurred primarily in the temperature range 250–500 °C.
