Differences in the topographical distribution of EEG activity during surgical anaesthesia and on emergence from volatile anesthetics.

1994

Computerized processing of a 16 channel EEG allows mapping and display of cortical electrical activity in a useful mode for intraoperative monitoring. We studied the topographical distribution of EEG-activity displayed as spectral maps comparing inhalational anaesthesia with isoflurane or enflurane during surgical anaesthesia and emergence. Two groups of nine patients each were anaesthetized with one of the two regimens. The EEG patterns during steady state end-tidal concentrations of isoflurane (0.7-1.1%) or enflurane (0.8-1.3%) showed highest activity in the frontal and occipital areas. At near awakening the frontal and occipital dominance of delta activity disappeared in both groups and …

Distribution of chlorpromazine in a simplified blood influenced by various drugs

1973

The binding of chlorpromazine to erythrocytes and to albumin as influenced by other drugs was studied in a simplified blood (31.5±0.3% bovine erythrocytes, 4 g-% bovine serum albumin in 0.02 M phosphate buffer solution containing 0.15 M NaCl). the total concentration of chlorpromazine in the simplified blood was 10−4 M, the concentration of the displacing drugs was 10−3 M. After an incubation period of 3 h at 22° C the chlorpromazine concentration was determined in the albumin solution after centrifugation of the blood at 3000×g and in the aqueous phase after ultracentrifugation at 150000×g. Under control conditions 68.1±0.9% of chlorpromazine was bound to the erythrocytes, 28.5±0.9% was bo…

The Hemodynamic Effects of Ephedrine on the Onset Time of Rocuronium in Pigs

2004

Several studies have found a correlation between the onset time of muscle relaxants, cardiac index, and muscle blood flow. Ephedrine increases these hemodynamic variables and shortens onset time of rocuronium in humans. Our aim in this animal study was to determine the effect of ephedrine on the onset time of rocuronium, cardiac index, and muscle blood flow after administration of thiopental. At predefined measuring points, mean arterial blood pressure and cardiac index were measured invasively and onset time was determined mechanomyographically. Twenty-four pigs were randomly assigned to three groups. Group I received etomidate and subsequently rocuronium (2 x 95% effective dose). Instead …

Role of the Endothelium in the Relaxation Induced by Propofol and Thiopental in Isolated Arteries from Man

1997

Abstract Induction of anaesthesia with intravenous propofol and thiopental is often accompanied by hypotension. This study evaluates whether propofol and thiopental induce relaxation of isolated arteries from man and whether this effect is modulated by the endothelium. Mesenteric artery rings (with and without endothelium) from 12 patients were placed in organ baths and precontracted with phenylephrine before addition of propofol (10−3 M) or thiopental (10−3 M). Relaxation induced by propofol and thiopental was evaluated for rings with intact endothelium in the presence of the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME; 10−4 M) or the cyclooxygenase inhibitor i…

Determination of Death in Execution by Lethal Injection in China.

2018

Abstract:Since 1997, execution in China has been increasingly performed by lethal injection. The current criteria for determination of death for execution by lethal injection (cessation of heartbeat, cessation of respiration, and dilated pupils) neither conform to current medical science nor to any standard of medical ethics. In practice, death is pronounced in China within tens of seconds after starting the lethal injection. At this stage, however, neither the common criteria for cardiopulmonary death (irreversible cessation of heartbeat and breathing) nor that of brain death (irreversible cessation of brain functions) have been met. To declare a still-living person dead is incompatible wi…

Inspired supplemental oxygen reduces markers of oxidative stress during elective colon surgery.

2007

.Anaesthesia was induced with sodium thiopental andfentanyl, and maintained with sevoflurane. After inductionof anaesthesia, patients were randomly assigned 30 or80 per cent oxygen throughout surgery and for 6 hafterwards. During surgery, lungs were ventilated involume-controlled mode (10 ml/kg), whereas during the6 h afterwards respiration was spontaneous with an oxygenmask (16 l/min)
