L’esilio al femminile. Neue Frauen oltreoceano
2020
The essay offers an overview of the experience of exile of a group of German and Austrian female writers (Adrienne Thomas, Irmgard Keun, Victoria Wolff, Gina Kaus and Vicki Baum), who had been a symbol of the so–called Neue Frau in the Twenties and emigrated after the rise of National Socialism. From an autobiographical point of view the reconstruction of their experience of exile, which sometimes include common stations (Vienna, Paris, the crossing of the Atlantic, Hollywood and, in some cases, the return to Europe), allows to compare their careers and to find out breaks and possible lines of continuity in the process of their literary affirmation and social emancipation which had begun in…
«Ich kann Nietzsche nicht böse sein, weil er mir meine Deutschen verdorben hat…». Thomas Mann lettore della Geburt der Tragödie
2022
The paper proposes an analysis of the reception of Nietzsche’s Die Geburt der Tragödie in Thomas Mann, with particular attention to the essay (1947) dedicated to the philosopher and to Doktor Faustus. The novel is read as an example of productive reception: Nietzsche’s categories of Apollonian and Dionysian, and even more so the idea of a rebirth of the great tragic art, become narrative cues that animate the entire story. The Doktor Faustus does not limit itself to parodying particular concepts of the Birth of Tragedy, but ends up presenting itself as a captivating ‘instruction manual’ for a correct reading of Nietzsche’s work.
Giuseppe e i suoi fratelli: la ritraduzione come forma di competizione
2023
The article reconstructs the history of the Italian retranslation of Thomas Mann’s "Joseph und seine Brüder". Although Mondadori already published the work (four volumes from 1933 to 1948), shortly after the death of the first translator, the retranslation of the entire tetralogy was commissioned. Based on the letters between the publisher, the author and the new translator, the paper tries to shed light on an unusual case of retranslation, where the rules that generally determine its necessity do not seem to be applicable.
"Deutschlands ganze Tugend und Schoenheit entfaltet sich erst im Kriege". I "Pensieri di guerra" di Thomas Mann
2015
«Deutschlands ganze Tugend und Schönheit entfaltet sich erst im Kriege». Thomas Mann’s Thoughts in Wartime by Francesca Tucci Thomas Mann’s writings of a journalistic nature, produced on the day following the outbreak of the conflict, provide one of the most significant cross-sections of “Culture in wartime”. These writings are remarkably topical, and, as regards analogy of tone and theme, they are in perfect accordance with the militarist output of the time. However, a more profound level of signification can be traced in these writings, and this allows the original nucleus of specifically Mannian themes, bound with a double-knot to the sphere of Art, to shine through as a constant presenc…
