State surveillance as a threat to personal security of individuals
2015
Changes in modern society are crucial to individuals. Article starts with analysis of control in nowadays societies. Then author tries to understand useful categories, as "Panopticon", "ban-opticon" and "synopticon". Last part is focused on stete surveillance, i.e. surveillance by American National Security Agency.
Support for collective action against refugees: The role of national, European, and global identifications, and autochthony beliefs
2019
To understand recent anti-refugee protests in Europe, we examined how different levels of inclusiveness of group identities (national, European, and global) are related to intentions to protest among native Europeans. We focused on the mediating role of autochthony (a belief that the first inhabitants of a territory are more entitled) and the moderating role of threat. Survey data from 11 European countries (N=1909) showed that national identification was positively associated with autochthony, and therefore, with the intention to protest against refugees. In contrast, global identification was related to lower protest intentions via lower autochthony. These paths were found only among Euro…
Selecting networks of nature reserves: methods do affect the long-term outcome
1999
Data on vascular plants of boreal lakes in Finland were used to compare the efficiency of reserve selection methods in representing four aspects of biodiversity over a 63 year period. These aspects included species richness, phylogenetic diversity, restricted range diversity and threatened species. Our results show that the efficiency of reserve selection methods depends on the selection criteria used and on the aspect of biodiversity under consideration. Heuristic methods and optimizing algorithms were nearly equally efficient in selecting lake networks over a small geographical range. In addition, a scoring procedure was observed to be efficient in maintaining different aspects of biodive…
Woodland key habitats evaluated as part of a functional reserve network
2010
Abstract Woodland key habitats (WKHs) represent a potentially cost-efficient means to protect biodiversity in managed forests. The Forest Act of Finland defines 13 habitat types of WKHs, which enjoy legal protection. It has been argued that WKHs are too small-sized and scattered in occurrence to be actually important in the maintenance of forest biodiversity. However, from the species’ perspective, WKHs form a network together with nature reserves. We evaluated the value and role of WKHs as a part of the whole reserve network using a graph-theoretical connectivity approach in three areas (ca. 500 km 2 each) located in Central Finland. The networks were formed separately for different habita…
Effects of cyber domain in crisis management
2019
There is fundamental need in EU-level to develop common alarm procedures and emergency response models with preventive functions which work well from local to national level and from national to international level. European Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) services such as law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical and disaster recovery services have recognized that lack of interoperability of technical systems limits cooperation between the PPDR authorities. Also, the military (MIL) and critical infrastructure protection (CIP) faces similar challenges. Recent major accidents have indicated that lack of human resources affects to disaster recovery. PPDR-actors cannot star…
Apparent Life-Threatening Events
2018
Objectives Apparent life-threatening event (ALTE) refers to a constellation of unexpected events suddenly occurring in infants that extremely alarm the observers. The objectives of this study were to evaluate 1) intervention of Emergency Service (ES) at home, 2) parental behavior before ES intervention, 3) patients' outcome at follow-up of a minimum of 6 months. Methods Retrospective study of infants younger than 12 months whose parents called ES and were evaluated for ALTE from 2005 to 2014. Tactile stimulation (TS) was defined as any maneuver performed by parents or ES staff aimed at rescuing patients without cardiopulmonary resuscitation attempts. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was define…
Analiza stanu świadomości zagrożenia zjawiskiem powodzi na obszarze zlewni rzeki Biała Głuchołaska
2016
Celem pracy było zbadanie poziomu świadomości dotyczącej powodzi wśród osób zamieszkujących zlewnię transgranicznej rzeki Biała Głuchołaska. Empiryczną analizę przeprowadzono za pomocą ankiety w grupie około 300 osób. Wśród ankietowanych wyróżniono sześć grup wiekowych. Respondenci udzielili odpowiedzi na 25 pytań. Ankieta stanowiła narzędzie do określenia poziomu wiedzy z zakresu zabezpieczeń przeciwpowodziowych, systemów ostrzegania, zachowania się w czasie powodzi i częstości jej występowania oraz strat, jakie ze sobą niesie, przygotowania służb reagowania do powodzi, ogólnego poziomu obawy przed powodzią, stopnia przygotowania ludności do wystąpienia powodzi oraz ochrony przeciwpowodzio…
Impact of landscape on spatial genetic structure and diversity ofCoenagrion mercuriale(Zygoptera:Coenagrionidae) in northern France
2015
AbstractLoss and fragmentation of habitat is a current main cause of biodiversity loss in freshwater habitats. Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) depend on these habitats to complete their development. Fragmentation may be a particular threat for odonates because it generates a network of small habitat patches within which populations could suffer from isolation and loss of genetic diversity. The southern damselfly Coenagrion mercuriale is categorized on the IUCN red list as Near Threatened, largely because of population fragmentation and demographic declines associated with changes in land use. Small populations at the margin of this species’ range are of particular concern because the…
Up-to-date report on the distribution ofHelianthemum lippii(Cistaceae) in Italy
2015
An up-to-date report on the distribution of Helianthemum lippii in Italy is provided also on the basis of the findings by Lojacono-Pojero in 1889 who reported the existence of a relic population in Sicily (southern Italy), which is now thought to be extinct because of human disturbance. Field excursions permitted to confirm the locus classicus reported by Lojacono-Pojero as the other Sicilian localities that have been reported more recently. Based on a careful analysis of the literature the presence of H. lippii is currently excluded in Calabria and Apulia. The main causes that threaten the habitat of H. lippii in Sicily are pointed out according to IUCN Threats Classification Scheme.
Patch size and connectivity influence the population turnover of the threatened chequered blue butterfly, Scolitantides orion (Lepidoptera: Lycaenida…
2008
Chequered blue butterfly, Scolitantides orion (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) has severely declined in many parts of Europe and is currently red-listed in many countries. We studied the population structure and turnover of the species in a lake-island system in a National Park in eastern Finland over a three-year period. The incidence of the chequered blue on the suitable islands (n = 41) and habitat patches (n = 123) was high: an average of 82% of the islands and patches were occupied over the three year period. At the island scale, the annual population turnover rate was 17%, with an extinction and colonization rate of 7% and 10%, respectively. At the patch scale, the annual population turnover…
