Venous Thromboembolism Risk in Patients With Locoregional Urothelial Tract Tumors

2017

Data de publicació electrónica: 24-08-2017 BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is common in cancer patients, but there is limited data on patients with urothelial tract tumors (UTT). We previously identified several associative factors for increased VTE rates in patients with metastatic UTT. In this study, we assessed the frequency, associative factors, and impact on survival of VTE in patients with locoregional UTT. METHODS: Patients with locoregional bladder, upper urinary tract, or urethral cancer were included in this multi-center study from 29 academic institutions. Patients with N1, or M1 disease at diagnosis were excluded. Patients with incomplete clinical staging or miscoded/mi…

Farbcodierte Dopplersonographie (FD-Sonographie) primärer und sekundärer Lebertumoren

2008

50 Patients with 78 focal liver lesions were examined via colour-coded Doppler system to study the vascularity of metastatic lesions and primary benign and malignant liver tumours. According to the amount of detectable colour Doppler signals, tumour vascularity was graded into 4 types. Metastases (n = 40) and cavernous haemangiomas (n = 12) seemed to be avascular with no evidence of increased vascularity (Type I/II). Conversely primary liver cancer (PLCA) (n = 7) and focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) (n = 16) mainly produced arterial Doppler signals within the tumour (Type III/IV). AV shunts and partial portal vein thrombosis could be demonstrated in PLCA. Doppler colour flow imaging for dete…

C-reactive protein and efficacy of antiplatelet therapy in (intracranial) atherosclerosis

2018

C-reactive protein (CRP) and other inflammatory biomarkers can indicate both the severity and extent of atherosclerosis, reflecting the inflammatory nature of the disease process.1 Atherogenesis begins with an inflammatory response to vascular injury with cells and mediators initiating the healing response and later inducing growth of atherosclerotic plaques. Inflammation then increases plaque instability, promoting rupture, fissuring, or erosion—the pathogenetic milieu of thrombosis in atherothrombotic ischemic strokes.

Background Catheter-based lysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) is a well-established therapy for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The effectiveness of this therapy can be increased with ultrasound, but the optimal conditions are not yet clearly established. Using a novel in vitro system of blood clots previously developed by our group, we investigated various parameters of intralesional sonothrombolysis using an endosonography catheter in combination with rtPA. Methods Standardized human blood clots were equipped with a drainage catheter and weighed before and after 4 treatments: control (drainage only), rtPA only, ultrasound only and the combination of rtPA…

AbstractAssays measuring platelet aggregation (thrombus formation) at arterial shear rate mostly use collagen as only platelet-adhesive surface. Here we report a multi-surface and multi-parameter flow assay to characterize thrombus formation in whole blood from healthy subjects and patients with platelet function deficiencies. A systematic comparison is made of 52 adhesive surfaces with components activating the main platelet-adhesive receptors, and of eight output parameters reflecting distinct stages of thrombus formation. Three types of thrombus formation can be identified with a predicted hierarchy of the following receptors: glycoprotein (GP)VI, C-type lectin-like receptor-2 (CLEC-2)&g…

Novel contributions of neutrophils in the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysm, the role of neutrophil extracellular traps: A systematic review.

2020

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a vascular disorder caused by a dilatation of the aortic diameter that can be potentially lethal in case of rupture. Molecular mechanisms underlying the development of AAA are complex and not completely understood. However, inflammation plays a pivotal role in AAA development. Infiltration of inflammatory cells, especially macrophages, has been widely observed in lesion areas. Nevertheless, neutrophils have been gaining importance in the context of AAA. The release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), extracellular structures formed by DNA, histones, granular and cytoplasmic proteins, is a recently discovered mechanism of neutrophil activation that ca…

Intracapillary HbO2 Saturation in Tumor Tissue of DS-Carcinosarcoma During Normoxia

1978

Investigations on solid tumor tissue have shown that O2 uptake by cancer cells depends largely on the supply conditions. The absence of sufficient neovascularization and a general rarefaction of the terminal vascular bed during tumor growth as well as reduced and inhcmogeneous blood flew due to vascular stasis in neoplastic tissue prevent normal functions of the terminal vascular bed. In some areas of the tumor circulating blood is not visible despite the intactness of vessels. Stasis occurs since lacuna-like, sinusoidal and cystiform blood vessels cannot be drained completely because ‘tissue-pressure’ due to continuous cell proliferation can prevent efficient circulation. Thrombosis follow…

How Epidemiology of Polycythemia Vera Has Changed in the Last 10 Years: Results From the Whole Prospective Cohort of Patients in Cyto-PV Trial As Com…

2012

Abstract Abstract 1748 Introduction: Polycythemia vera (PV) is a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms characterized by erythrocytosis, vasomotor disturbances, pruritus, risk of disease progression into acute myeloid leukemia or myelofibrosis and cardiovascular events, the last representing the main cause of morbidity and mortality. Since 2005 the V617F point mutation in Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) gene gained a dominant role in determining the molecular basis and the diagnosis of PV. We compared the clinical epidemiology of the 1638 patients included in the ECLAP trial in the years 1997 to 2001, with that of a “modern” cohort of 365 PV, JAK2-positive patients included in the Italian CYTO-PV rando…

Otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis in children: proposal of an experience-based treatment flowchart

2018

Purpose: To describe the prevalent clinical, laboratory, and radiological features of otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis (OLST) in children; to identify clinical predictors of outcome; to propose a management algorithm derived from experience. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of the clinical records of patients with OLST, treated in a single tertiary care referral center for pediatric disease from 2006 to 2017. The inclusion criteria were pediatric age (0–16 years) and OLST diagnosis confirmed by a pre- and post-contrast CT or venography–MRI scan. Primary outcome measures were early (1–2 months) and late (6 months) sinus recanalization assessed by means of neuroimaging. Results:…
