The Autoimmune Regulator AIRE in Thymoma Biology: Autoimmunity and Beyond

2010

Thymomas are tumors of thymic epithelial cells. They associate more often than any other human tumors with various autoimmune diseases; myasthenia gravis is the commonest, occurring in 10-50% of thymoma patients, depending on the World Health Organization-defined histologic subtype. Most thymomas generate many polyclonal maturing T lymphocytes but in disorganized microenvironments Failure to induce self-tolerance may be a key factor leading to the export of potentially autoreactive CD4 progeny, thus predisposing to autoimmune diseases. Normally, the master Autoimmune Regulator promotes expression of peripheral tissue-restricted antigens such as insulin by medullary thymic epithelial cells a…

Bilateral single-port thoracoscopic extended thymectomy for management of thymoma and myasthenia gravis: Case report

2016

Background Video-assisted thoracoscopy is become a widely accepted approach for the resection of anterior mediastinal masses, including thymoma. The current trend is to reduce the number of ports and minimize the length of incisions to further decrease postoperative pain, chest wall paresthesia, and length of hospitalization. Herein, we reported an extended resection of thymoma in a patient with myasthenia gravis through an uniportal bilateral thoracoscopic approach. Case presentation A 74 years old woman with myasthenia gravis was referred to our attention for management of a 3.5 cm, well capsulate, thymoma. All laboratory and cardio-pulmonary tests were within normal; thus, she was schedu…

Typification and taxonomic characterization of Thymus longicaulis C. Presl (Lamiaceae)

2014

Thymus longicaulis, described from Sicily by Carl Bořivoj Presl, is a critical Mediterranean species, often confused with other taxa belonging to Th. sect. Serpyllum. In order to preserve the current application of this name, a lecotype is designated. Furthermore a detailed morphological description and information about habitat, phenology, distribution, karyology and taxonomy are provided.

The thymus at the crossroad of neuroimmune interactions.

2006

The numerous relationships existing between the nervous and the immune systems suggest that the neural networks present in the intrathymic microenvironment may influence T-cell development. We previously reported that thymic neural-crest-derived stromal cells are involved in a neural differentiation pathway and are able to produce neurotrophic factors and neurokines that are in turn able to increase and/or modulate thymic-stromal cell neuronal phenotype. We also showed that EGF promotes a neural phenotype in thymic epithelial cells by enhancing the expression of neuronal-specific markers, neurotransmitters, and neuropoietic cytokines, such as IL-6 and CNTF. More recently we showed that the …

Thymus vulgaris Essential Oil and Hydro-Alcoholic Solutions to Counteract Wooden Artwork Microbial Colonization

2021

Aromatic plants represent a source of natural products with medicinal properties, and are also utilized in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Recently, the need for eco-compatible and non-toxic products, safe for both the environment and human health, have been proposed for the sustainable conservation of historic–artistic artifacts. In this study, in order to counteract microbial colonization (Aspergillus sp., Streptomyces sp., Micrococcus sp.) on wooden artwork surfaces, Thymus vulgaris L. (Lamiaceae) essential oil (EO) and hydro-alcoholic (HA) solutions were applied in a polyphasic approach. The antimicrobial activities of EO and HA solutions were preliminarily assessed by agar disc…

Thymoma and paraneoplastic myasthenia gravis

2010

Paraneoplastic autoimmune diseases associate occasionally with small cell lung cancers and gynecologic tumors. However, myasthenia gravis (MG) occurs in at least 30% of all patients with thymomas (usually present at MG diagnosis). These epithelial neoplasms almost always have numerous admixed maturing polyclonal T cells (thymocytes). This thymopoiesis-and export of mature CD4(+)T cells-particularly associates with MG, though there are rare/puzzling exceptions in apparently pure epithelial WHO type A thymomas. Other features potentially leading to inefficient self-tolerance induction include defective epithelial expression of the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene and/or of major histocompatib…

Chromatogrphic Profiles of Polyphenols and Terpenoids in the Herbs of Some Thymus L. Represntatives

2022

The aim of the work. To perform the identification of phenolic compounds and terpenoids in the aerial parts of Thymus pulegioides L. (cultivar ‘2/6-07’), Thymus richardii Pers. (cultivar 'Fantasy') and Thymus vulgaris L. (cultivar ‘Jalos’) using thin layer chromatography (TLC), as well as to conduct the gaschromatographic analysis of Thymus richardii essential oil. Materials and Methods. The TLC method was used in this study for the qualitative analyses of polyphenols and non-polar compounds in the aerial part of three Thyme (Thymus L.) species from the Lamiaceae Martinov family cultivated in Kherson region (Ukraine). The volatile compounds were determined in the essential oil of Thymus ric…
