COMPARISON OF THE PHOTOCATALYTIC DEGRADATION OF 2-PROPANOL IN GAS-SOLID AND LIQUID-SOLID SYSTEMS BY USING TiO2 – LnPc2 HYBRID POWDERS

2009

Photocatalytic degradation of 2-propanol was carried out as a probe reaction both in gas–solid and in liquid–solid systems in the presence of TiO2 both bare and impregnated with lanthanide (Sm, Gd, Ho) bis-phthalocyanines (LnPc2) used as sensitizers. Continuous and batch photo-reactors, irradiated with an equal flux of photons, were used in gas–solid and in liquid–solid systems, respectively. Propanone and acetaldehyde were the main intermediates found in both systems during 2-propanol oxidation, whereas carbon dioxide and water were the final oxidation products exclusively in the gas–solid regime. The photocatalysts exhibited significantly higher activity in the liquid–solid system than in…

Trattamenti a base di TiO2 nanocristallina ad azione protettiva indiretta fotocatalitica applicati ai beni architettonici

2009

The research is focused on the definition of a diagnostic program to verify a protective product for stone surfaces. The objective is, in particular, to verify the treatments efficacy of nanocrystalline TiO2 (Titania) with indirect photocatalytic protective action, in the form of thin films made through the sol-gel method, and applied to the stone materials of the Monumental Heritage, through a poly-methodological scientific research, that allow to assess the innovative behaviour towards the fundamental principles of conservation and restoration of the architectural-artistic heritage. To define the research’s program have collaborated Department of Geosciences of University of Padova, ISTM-…

Synthesis of vanillin in water by TiO2 photocatalysis

2012

Abstract The photoproduction of vanillin is studied in aqueous medium starting from trans-ferulic acid, isoeugenol, eugenol or vanillyl alcohol by using both commercial and home prepared TiO2 samples as photocatalysts and batch Pyrex photoreactors. The photo-oxidation at room temperature of these compounds produces vanillin with a selectivity ranging from 1.4 to 21 mol% with respect to the converted substrate. An investigation on the intermediates was performed in the case of trans-ferulic acid; for this substrate the most important intermediates were homovanillic acid, vanillyl mandelic acid, trans-caffeic acid, formic acid, acetic acid, and oxalic acid. The carbon mass balance, including …

Degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) using Fe–TiO2 as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst

2010

Photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol was investigated using Fe-doped (1, 3, 5 and 8 wt.% Fe) TiO(2) catalysts under UV light irradiation in aqueous dispersions in the presence of H(2)O(2). Photocatalysts with the lowest Fe content (1%) showed a considerably better behavior with respect to the unloaded TiO(2) and the catalysts with higher Fe contents. Photocatalytic degradation was studied under different conditions such as amounts of 1% Fe-TiO(2) catalyst, H(2)O(2) dose and initial pH of 4-NP solution. The results indicated that about 67.53% total organic carbon of a solution containing 20 mg L(-1) 4-NP was removed at pH 6.17 by using 4.9 mM of H(2)O(2) and 0.4 g L(-1) of the catalys…

Electron and Energy Transfer Mechanisms: The Double Nature of TiO2 Heterogeneous Photocatalysis

2021

Photocatalytic chemical transformations in the presence of irradiated TiO2 are generally considered in terms of interfacial electron transfer. However, more elusive energy-transfer-driven reactions have been also hypothesized to occur, mainly on the basis of the indirect evidence of detected reaction products whose existence could not be justified simply by electron transfer. Unlike in homogeneous and colloidal systems, where energy transfer mechanisms have been investigated deeply for several organic syntheses, understanding of similar processes in heterogeneous systems is at only a nascent level. However, this gap of knowledge can be filled by considering the important achievements of syn…

Titania Photocatalysts for Selective Oxidations in Water

2011

Heterogeneous photocatalysis by polycrystalline semiconductor oxides is an unconventional technology that has been mainly applied for the degradation of organic and inorganic pollutants in both the vapor and liquid phase. The application of photocatalysis in synthetic routes has also been researched in recent years, demonstrating its viability as an alternative route in organic chemistry. This work illustrates the main findings in the application of heterogeneous photocatalysis to the oxidation of organic compounds dissolved in water, free of any organic co-solvent. Two main aspects of the oxidative process have been studied: the first one is the partial oxidation of various mono-substitute…

Depth profiling of Al2O3 + TiO2 nanolaminates by means of a time-of-flight energy spectrometer

2011

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is currently a widespread method to grow conformal thin films with a sub-nm thickness control. By using ALD for nanolaminate oxides, it is possible to fine tune the electrical, optical and mechanical properties of thin films. In this study the elemental depth profiles and surface roughnesses were determined for Al2O3 + TiO2 nanolaminates with nominal single-layer thicknesses of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 nm and total thickness between 40 nm and 60 nm. The depth profiles were measured by means of a time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis (ToF-ERDA) spectrometer recently installed at the University of Jyväskylä. In TOF-E measurements 63Cu, 35Cl, 12C and 4He ions…

From tungsten hexacarbonyl adsorption on TiO2(1 1 0) surface to supported tungsten oxide phases.

2008

Abstract Synchrotron-based photoemission spectroscopies were used to study the adsorption of tungsten hexacarbonyl on (1 1 0) TiO 2 surfaces: experiments using W4f and Ti2p intensities variations show that, at 140 K, the hexacarbonyl growth proceeds via a layer-by-layer mode. Moreover, it was evidenced using both core levels and valence band experiments that, after back to room temperature, W(CO) 6 desorbs without significant decomposition. However, low energy (500 eV) ion (Ar + ) irradiation can allow partial decomposition of tungsten hexacarbonyl molecules leading to sub-carbonyl tungsten molecules. The bonding of sub-carbonyl species to the TiO 2 surface was then stronger than the one of…
