Chemometrics as a tool to discriminate geographical origin of Cyperus esculentus L. based on chemical composition
2013
[EN] In the present study the chemical composition of Cyperus esculentus L. (tiger nut) from four distinct geographical origin (Spain, Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa) was assessed to observe the possible effect of the cultivation site in the fatty acids profile, sterols composition, and squalene and -tocopherol content. It was verified that the individual fatty acids as well as the different fatty acids fractions were severely affected by the geographical origin. Tiger nut oils were predominantly monounsaturated with lower prevalence of saturated fatty acids, and with capability to provide appreciable amounts of essential fatty acids. The sterols fraction was affected as well, but in lowe…
Tiger nut and its by-products valorization: From extraction of oil and valuable compounds to development of new healthy products
2018
Abstract Consumer's growing demand for consumption of “Horchata de chufa”, a Spanish beverage produced from tiger nut tubers, has led to large-scale production of tiger nuts, and its subsequent processing for the food industry. Recent investigations clearly show that tiger nut is a valuable source of stable vegetable oils, rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, and phytosterols as well as high-added value compounds (proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds). Several conventional (Soxhlet) and alternative innovative (SC-CO2, enzyme, high pressure, etc.) extraction methods have been developed for the efficient recovery of tiger nut oil and high-added value compounds. …
Use of Tiger Nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) Oil Emulsion as Animal Fat Replacement in Beef Burgers
2020
The present study evaluated the replacement of beef fat in beef burgers using a tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) oil emulsion, in order to reduce total fat and saturated fatty acids in the studied samples. Three formulations were processed: Control&mdash
Untargeted metabolomics of fresh and heat treatment Tiger nut ( Cyperus esculentus L. ) milks reveals further insight into food quality and nutrition
2017
Tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) is a crop traditionally grown in Valencia Region (Spain) and other temperate and tropical regions in the world, where its tubers are commonly consumed as tiger nut milk (horchata). Because of their nutritive potential and original taste, these products are beginning to spread internationally and, as consequence, analytical procedures to assess nutritional profiles, quality control issues are acquiring increasing relevance. The main objective of this study was to use an advance analytical method and chemometrics tools to determine if the ultra-high temperature (UHT) treatment necessary to extend the shelf life of tiger nut milk would affect the profile of nu…
2018
Tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus) is a tuber that can be consumed raw or processed into beverages. Its nutritional composition shows a high content of lipid and dietary fiber, close to those of nuts, and a high content of starch, like in other tubers. Tiger nuts also contain high levels of phosphorus, calcium, and phenolic compounds, which contribute to their antioxidant activity. From those characteristics, tiger nuts and derived beverages are particularly relevant to limit food insecurity in regions where the plant can grow. In Europe and United States, the tiger nut derived beverages are of high interest as alternatives to milk and for gluten-free diets. Fermentation or addition of probioti…
Occurrence of fourteen mycotoxins in tiger-nuts
2012
Abstract A previous developed matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) extraction method was applied for the routine analysis of aflatoxins (AFs), ochratoxin A (OTA), fumonisins (FB 1 and FB 2 ), beauvericin (BEA), nivalenol (NIV), deoxynivalenol (DON), the toxin T-2 (T-2), toxin HT-2 (HT-2), diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS) and zearalenone (ZEN) in tiger-nuts by liquid chromatography–triple-quadrupole linear ion trap (HPLC–QTRAP ® ). The extraction solid support used was C 18 , while the elution solvent was acetonitrile/methanol (50/50, v/v) 1 mM ammonium formate. Using matrix-matched calibration, recoveries and repeatabilities were in the range 67–89% and 2–11% relative standard deviation (RSD), resp…
One-year monitoring of aflatoxins and ochratoxin A in tiger-nuts and their beverages.
2011
A sensitive and selective liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS-MS) method was developed for the routine analysis of aflatoxins (AFB(1), AFB(2), AFG(1) and AFG(2)) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in tiger nuts and tiger-nut beverage (horchata). A matrix solid phase dispersion was adapted to eliminate lipidic interferences. The solid support was C(18), while the elution solvent was acetonitrile. Mean recoveries obtained at two fortification levels were 72-83% and 71-81% for horchata and tiger nut respectively with relative standard deviations (RSDs) <13% and 15% respectively. The LC-MS-MS method allowed quantification and identification at low levels in two matri…
Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor : case series of 14 with wide range of clinical presentation
2017
Background To present 14 cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), highlighting their clinical, radiographic, and histologic characteristics. Material and Methods Fourteen cases of AOT were retrieved from the archives of the Oral Pathology Biopsy Service (OPBS). Clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings are described. Results Fourteen AOT cases were reviewed, of which 12 were intraosseous and two were peripheral (gingiva). The cases came from eight females and six males with an age range of 11-30. Of the 12 intraosseous cases, nine were follicular (associated with impacted teeth), while three were extra-follicular (present between teeth). Six of the 12 cases were in the maxilla, and…

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma arising in dentigerous cyst: Report of 2 cases and review of the literature
2015
Dentigerous cysts are one of the most common odontogenic cysts of the oral cavity. Odontogenic cysts can give rise to a variety of neoplasms. Carcinoma arising in a dentigerous cyst is extremely rare, with a review of literature showing near 30 cases. The present report describes 2 cases of primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma originated from a dentigerous cyst. The first one refers to a 57-year old female with a persistent lesion in the left retromolarregion and diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma originated fromthe incomplete excision of the lower third molar follicle during its surgical extraction. The second case describes the case of an 18-year old male with an impacted uppe…
