Temperature affects the ontogeny of sexually dimorphic cuticular hydrocarbons inDrosophila melanogaster
2002
0022-0949 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; Hydrocarbons on the cuticle of mature Drosophila melanogaster flies play a crucial role in mate recognition, and protect against dehydration. We measured the effect of temperature on mature cuticular hydrocarbons (CHs) by (i) rearing two control strains at different temperatures, (ii) shifting the temperature after metamorphosis and (iii) inducing a single heat-shock pulse in control and heat-sensitive transgenic strains, over a period of 3 days following adult eclosion. This study describes the time course of the events involved in the production of male- and female-predominant CHs. We also found that 'immature' CHs, sexua…
Abnormal synchrony and effective connectivity in patients with schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations
2014
Auditory hallucinations (AH) are the most frequent positive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Hallucinations have been related to emotional processing disturbances, altered functional connectivity and effective connectivity deficits. Previously, we observed that, compared to healthy controls, the limbic network responses of patients with auditory hallucinations differed when the subjects were listening to emotionally charged words. We aimed to compare the synchrony patterns and effective connectivity of task-related networks between schizophrenia patients with and without AH and healthy controls. Schizophrenia patients with AH (n = 27) and without AH (n = 14) were compared with healt…
Significant divergences between the temporal structure of the behavior in Wistar and in the spontaneously more anxious DA/Han strain of rats tested i…
2013
Abstract The aim of present research is to study the temporal structure of the behavior in two strains of rats with different basal level of emotionality. To this purpose, the temporal profile of the behavior in Wistar rat and in the spontaneously more anxious DA/Han strain was analyzed in the Elevated Plus Maze. Both quantitative and multivariate t-pattern analyses were carried out. In comparison with Wistar, DA/Han subjects showed a significant reduction of the permanence in open arm and a significant increase of the time spent in the central platform of the maze. Mean frequencies of each behavioral element showed significant modifications both in open and in closed arm. Multivariate t-pa…
Developmental changes in the microgenesis of face perception revealed by effects of context and inversion
2011
AbstractPresent studies on the development of face perception mechanisms are ambiguous about the question of whether holistic face vision arises early, or in the second decade of life (Crookes & McKone, 2009). Measuring the time course of face matching we assess effects of context and inversion as correlates of holistic processing in the microgenesis of face perception within the first 650ms, and compare among 8- to 10-year-old children and adults. Results for adults indicate dominance of holistic viewing at brief timings, which is gradually replaced by feature selective strategies enabling them to selectively attend either internal or external features, as demanded by instruction. For chil…
Similar level of metabolic activation of benzo(a)pyrene in perfused rat lung and liver and protection of lung by liver in a combined perfusion system
1982
Abstract Irreversible binding of metabolically activated benzo(a)pyrene to DNA, RNA and protein proceeds by a different time course in perfused liver and lung of 5,6-benzoflavone-treated rats. Peak binding in liver is obtained after 15 min while binding in lung continuously increases over 120 min. Total irreversible binding per mg DNA or RNA is in the same order of magnitude in both organs. While binding in lung is lower at 15 min it exceeds binding in liver at 120 min. Binding per mg protein is higher in lung than in liver over the whole perfusion period. Introduction of a liver into the lung perfusion circuit decreases binding in lung. This protection effect is more pronounced when the li…
Adhesive interaction measured between AFM probe and lung epithelial type II cells
2007
The toxicity of inhaled nanoparticles entering the body through the lung is thought to be initially defined by the electrostatic and adhesive interaction of the particles with lung's wall. Here, we investigated the first step of the interaction of nanoparticles with lung epithelial cells using atomic force microscope (AFM) as a force apparatus. Nanoparticles were modeled by the apex of the AFM tip and the forces of interaction between the tip and the cell analyzed over time. The adhesive force and work of adhesion strongly increased for the first 100 s of contact and then leveled out. During this time, the tip was penetrating deeply into the cell. It first crossed a stiff region of the cell…
The time course of face matching for featural and relational image manipulations
2011
It was found recently that horizontal and vertical relationships of facial features are differently vulnerable to inversion (Goffaux & Rossion, 2007). When faces are upside down manipulations of vertical relations are difficult to detect, while only moderate performance deficits are found for manipulations of horizontal relations, or when features differ. We replicate the findings of Goffaux and Rossion, and record the temporal courses of face matching performance and the effects of inversion. For vertical relations and featural changes inversion effects arise immediately, starting with the first 50 ms of processing. For horizontal relations inversion effects are absent at brief timings, bu…
Hepatic extraction of isosorbide dinitrate in cardiac patients
1983
Hepatic extraction of organic nitrates, including that of isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN), has been thought to be nearly complete in man but has never been directly measured. We examined the time course of plasma ISDN and metabolite concentrations in arterial and hepatic venous blood in four cardiac patients receiving an intravenous ISDN infusion. Apparent hepatic extraction of ISDN was high (90%) at the beginning of infusion but fell to about 44% 1 hr after termination of infusion. The decrease in ISDN concentration gradient across the liver correlates with an increase in plasma isosorbide-5-mononitrate concentration, but a cause-and-effect relationship resulting from metabolite inhibition can…
Serial assessments of microvascular obstruction by contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance predict contractile recovery and clinical outcome after reper…
2015
AIMS The purpose of the study was to investigate, using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), the presence and time course of microvascular obstruction (MO) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and to test its relationship with cardiac remodeling and clinical outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS 53 patients with AMI and successful percutaneous reperfusion underwent CMR examination at four separate timepoints: within the first 48 hours, at 10 days, at six and twelve months after infarction. MO was quantified immediately (early imaging) and 10 minutes (late imaging) after contrast administration in each session. The extent of MO decreased from early to late imaging at both the first and t…
Deterioration of organization in the first minutes of atrial fibrillation: A beat-to-beat analysis of cycle length and wave similarity
2007
Deterioration of AF Organization. Introduction: It has been recently suggested that many episodes of atrial fibrillation (AF) may be partially organized at the onset and thus more suitable for antitachycardia pacing therapy. Nevertheless, the time course of organization in the first minutes of AF has not been quantified yet. Methods and Results: Twenty episodes of paroxysmal AF were studied. Electrograms were recorded from the right atrium (RA), distal (CSd), and proximal coronary sinus (CSp). The time course of AF cycle length (AFCL) and the regularity of wave morphology (similarity index S) were beat-to-beat measured at each recording site during the first 7 minutes of AF. AFCL and S show…
