Biological responses to individualized small titanium implants for the treatment of focal full-thickness knee cartilage defects in a sheep model.

2019

Abstract Background The present study aimed to evaluate the functional, radiological and histological outcome of a customized focal implant for the treatment of focal full-thickness cartilage defects in sheep. Methods The study used magnetic resonance imaging data as the basis for construction of the titanium implant using a three-dimensional printing technique. This was then placed on the medial condyle of the knee joint in eight sheep and left in place in vivo over a period of six months. Following euthanasia, the local biological response was analyzed using micro-computed tomography, light microscopy and histological evaluation (International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) score). The v…

Hierarchical, Lithium‐Templated Assembly of Helicate‐Type Complexes: How Versatile Is This Reaction?

2007

Catechol ligands that bear carbonyl functions such as esters or aldehydes in the 3-position (1a–c-H2) form triple-stranded, helicate-type complexes [Li3(1a–c)6Ti2]– with titanium(IV) and the corresponding double-stranded compounds [Li2(1a–c)4B2] with boron(III) in hierarchical, lithium-templatedprocesses. The related 8-hydroxyquinoline ligands 2a,b-H can be used for the formation of similar complexes[Li3(2a,b)6M2]+ with cobalt(II), nickel(II), or zinc(II). A prerequisite for the formation of the lithium-bridged dimers is a negative charge of the mononuclear complexes, which are able to electrostatically attract the lithium cations and thus compensate the repulsion between the cations. The Micro-Shear bond strength of different cements to commercially pure titanium

2019

Background The most appropriate luting agent for attaching the prefabricated Ti-based insert of hybrid abutments to its ceramic component has not yet been determined. This study was done aimed at examining the micro-shear bond strength (μSBS) of different cements to commercially pure titanium (Cp Ti). Material and Methods A total of 100 milled cubes of Cp Ti was airborne-particle abraded using 250 μm aluminum oxide particles. Specimens were then divided into 5 groups (n=20) according to the type of resin cement used: (1) Panavia F.2, (2) Rely X U200, (3) Panavia SA LUTING Plus, (4) GC Fuji I, and (5) GC FujiCEM 2. After 24h storage, half of the samples were subjected to 5000 cycles of therm…

Photocatalytic Properties of Cement-Based Plasters and Paints Containing Mineral Pigments

2010

Innovative cement-based premix products for surface coating of buildings that possess photocatalytic activity arouse great interest because of the results they can achieve in reducting air pollution and maintaining aesthetics. This photoactivity is induced by a photocatalyst, titanium dioxide, that can accelerate the oxidation processes of air pollutants, particularly nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, which are mainly produced by incomplete combustion of fuel and are present in urban environments through the exhaust gases of motor vehicles. Surfaces that are coated with these products acquire a self-cleaning characteristic (maintenance of original color) because the decomposi…

Development of new centrifuges for fast solvent extraction of transactinide elements

1995

The H-0.3 liquid-liquid centrifuge applied for rapid and efficient separation of two liquid phases, and the HG-0.1 gas-liquid centrifuge used to separate the gas phase stemming from a gas jet transportation system and the liquid phase, have been further improved. New centrifuges have been produced of PEEK, a plastic material, which makes them resistant to most aqueous and organic solutions. The performance with respect to time behavior and phase purity is comparable to the titanium centrifuges used so far. The H-0.3 centrifuge has been applied to solvent extraction studies of Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W and Pa from HF solutions into tri-n-octylamine.

Fracture resistance and the mode of failure produced in metal-free crowns cemented onto zirconia abutments in dental implants.

2019

The purpose of the investigation was to analyze fracture resistance and mode of failure of zirconium oxide (zirconia) abutments placed on dental implants bearing crowns of different esthetic materials: zirconia, lithium disilicate (LDS), and nano-ceramic resin, for replacing single teeth in the anterior sector. Eighty implant-abutment-crown units were divided into four groups: Group T-MC (control): 20 metal-ceramic crowns cemented onto titanium abutments; Group Z-Z: 20 zirconia crowns on zirconia abutments; Group Z-LD: 20 lithium disilicate crowns on zirconia abutments; and Group Z-NCR: 20 nano-ceramic resin crowns on zirconia abutments. Specimens underwent a fatiguing process (dynamic load…

A comparison between photocatalytic and catalytic oxidation of 2-Propanol over Au/TiO2-CeO2 catalysts

2016

Abstract Photocatalytic and catalytic oxidation of 2-propanol, representative of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), were compared over mixed TiO 2 –CeO 2 -based catalysts. The effect of different amounts of CeO 2 and the presence of gold (1 wt%) on TiO 2 was investigated. In the photocatalytic oxidation CeO 2 had a negative effect on the performance towards the alcohol conversion of both TiO 2 –CeO 2 and Au/TiO 2 –CeO 2 catalysts, being Au/TiO 2 the most active system. On the contrary mixed TiO 2 –CeO 2 and Au/TiO 2 –CeO 2 samples showed a higher catalytic oxidation efficiency for 2-propanol conversion compared to the single oxides. In this case Au/CeO 2 catalyst had the best performance. …

Mechanical performance of experimental acrylic resins modified by nanoparticles after chemical and mechanical degradation.

2020

Background Different materials have been incorporated into the polymethylmethacrylate matrix to improve its performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion (DC), the flexural strength (FS), the elasticity modulus (EM), and the effect of exposure to food-simulating liquids prior to brushing simulation on the gloss loss (GL) of experimental acrylic resins modified by nanoparticles. Material and methods Three different types of nanoparticles; silicon oxide (SiO2), cerium oxide (CeO2) and titanium oxide (TiO2) were added to a poly (methylmethacrylate) matrix, in proportions of 0.5wt%, 1wt% and 3wt% each, forming nine experimental groups. The acrylic resin was also te…

Chemical Vapour Deposition of Pure Titanium Using a Heated Wire Reactor and TiI4

2017

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 An experimental reactor system has been optimized throughout a series of experiments for making titanium tubes from an electrically heated titanium coil filament by a chemical vapour deposition method, based on the original van Arkel-de Boer -process. The titanium is thermally decomposed on the filament from vapourized titanium tetraiodide in a method not seen in similar experiments. The small-scale reactor is built for this purpose, and the associated systems and methods are developed to maintain the optimal conditions for a continuous metal deposition. A filament current control system is made of an Arduino micro-controlle…
