Cutoff solitons and bistability of the discrete inductance-capacitance electrical line: Theory and experiments
2007
A discrete nonlinear system driven at one end by a periodic excitation of frequency above the upper band edge (the discreteness induced cutoff) is shown to be a means to (1) generate propagating breather excitations in a long chain and (2) reveal the bistable property of a short chain. After detailed numerical verifications, the bistability prediction is demonstrated experimentally on an electrical transmission line made of 18 inductance-capacitance $(LC)$ cells. The numerical simulations of the $LC$-line model allow us also to verify the breather generation prediction with a striking accuracy.
3-D image analysis of fluorescent drug binding
2004
Fluorescent ligands provide the means of studying receptors in whole tissues using confocal laser scanning microscopy and have advantages over antibody- or non-fluorescence-based method. Confocal microscopy provides large volumes of images to be measured. Histogram analysis of 3-D image volumes is proposed as a method of graphically displaying large amounts of volumetric image data to be quickly analyzed and compared. The fluorescent ligand BODIPY FL-prazosin (QAPB) was used in mouse aorta. Histogram analysis reports the amount of ligand-receptor binding under different conditions and the technique is sensitive enough to detect changes in receptor availability after antagonist incubation or…
Bipolar disorder: A neural network perspective on a disorder of emotion and motivation
2013
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe, chronic disease with a heritability of 60-80%. BD is frequently misdiagnosed due to phenomenological overlap with other psychopathologies, an important issue that calls for the identification of biological and psychological vulnerability and disease markers. Altered structural and functional connectivity, mainly between limbic and prefrontal brain areas, have been proposed to underlie emotional and motivational dysregulation in BD and might represent relevant vulnerability and disease markers. In the present laboratory review we discuss functional and structural neuroimaging findings on emotional and motivational dysregulation from our research group in BD…
Multispectral and autofluorescence RGB imaging for skin cancer diagnostics
2019
This paper presents the results of statistical clinical data, combining two diagnostic methods. A combination of two skin imaging methods – diffuse reflectance and autofluorescence – has been applied for skin cancer diagnostics. Autofluorescence (AF) and multispectral diffuse reflectance images were acquired by custom made prototype with 405 nm, 526 nm, 663 nm and 964 nm LEDs and RGB CMOS camera. Parameter p’ was calculated from diffuse reflectance images under green, red and infrared illumination, AF intensity (I’) was calculated from AF images exited at 405nm wavelength. Obtained results show that criterion p` > 1 gives possibility to discriminate melanomas and different kind of keratosis…
Effect of high-pressure processing on carotenoids profile, colour, microbial and enzymatic stability of cloudy carrot juice
2019
Abstract The objective of this work was to assess the impact of high-pressure processing (HPP) on the carotenoid profile, colour as well as the microbial and enzymatic stability of cloudy carrot juice. The predominant carotenoids in the fresh juices were by far the provitamin A carotenoids β-carotene and α-carotene. Others were ζ-carotene, phytofluene, phytoene and lutein. HPP at 300 MPa in three cycles caused the highest carotenoids degradation (41%) whereas the lowest degradation (26%) was achieved at 600 MPa. The highest inactivation of POD (31%) and PPO (57%) was achieved with 600 MPa and 300 MPa applied in three cycles, respectively what indicates that POD is more responsible for carot…

High-performance and ion-exchange chromatography and chromatofocusing of the human uterine progesterone receptor: its application to the identificati…
1984
Two independent lines of evidence were used to identify the human uterine progesterone receptor. First, three differently tritiated progestogens (Org 2058, R 5020, progesterone) were used for reversible labelling of the receptor. Secondly, the highly potent affinity label 21-[3H]dehydro Org 2058 was used to label covalently the steroid-specific binding site of the receptor. The labelled cytosols were chromatographed on a Mono Q high-performance anion-exchange column in the absence or presence of a high molar excess of the respective unlabelled competitor steroids. In the case of 21-[3H]dehydro Org 2058, Org 2058 was used as the unlabelled competitor. After elution with a NaCl gradient, the …
A quantitative analysis of stratospheric HCl, HNO3, and O3 in the tropopause region near the subtropical jet
2014
The effects of chemical two-way mixing on the Extratropical Transition Layer (ExTL) near the subtropical jet are investigated by stratospheric tracer-tracer correlations. To this end, in situ measurements were performed west of Africa (25-32 ◦ N) during the Transport and Composition of the Upper Troposphere Lower Stratosphere (UTLS)/Earth System Model Validation (TACTS/ESMVal) mission in August/September 2012. The Atmospheric chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer sampling HCl and HNO3 was for the first time deployed on the new German High Altitude and Long range research aircraft (HALO). Measurements of O3, CO, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analysis, and the tig…
Psychological defense styles, childhood adversities and psychopathology in adulthood.
2003
OBJECTIVE: The present study explores the link between reported sexual and/or physical abuse and psychological defense styles, as well as the association of both with psychological distress in adulthood. In two patient samples that differ in psychological distress and somatization, we examine whether the adversities reported and immature defense styles are associated with psychopathological symptoms. METHOD: We examined 266 consecutive inpatients in the psychosomatic department and 109 consecutive inpatients who had been treated for low-back pain in the orthopedic department of a German university hospital. Psychological defense styles were assessed by a two-factor solution of the German mo…
