Identification of a new nonsense mutation (Tyr129Stop) of the SRY gene in a newborn infant with XY sex-reversal.

2004

Point mutations and deletions of SRY gene have been described in several cases of XY gonadal dysgenesis. To date, most of these mutations affect the HMG domain of SRY which plays a central role in DNA binding activity of SRY. We report on a non-mosaic XY sex-reversed newborn girl (completely female external genitalia). The direct sequencing of SRY showed a new nonsense mutation in a codon of SRY gene flanking the 3' end of the HMG domain: a thymine is replaced by a guanine at position +387 in codon 129, resulting in the replacement of the amino acid tyrosine (TAT) by a stop codon (TAG). The new mutation of this patient provides further evidence to support the functional importance of the pu…

Sexes in gynodioecious Geranium sylvaticum do not differ in their isotopic signature or photosynthetic capacity

2017

In gynodioecious plants, females are expected to produce more or better seeds than hermaphrodites in order to be maintained within the same population. Even though rarely measured, higher seed production can be achieved through differences in physiology. In this work, we measured sexual dimorphism in several physiological traits in the gynodioecious plant Geranium sylvaticum. Photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, WUE and isotopic signatures were measured in plants growing in two habitats differing in light availability. Females have been reported to produce more seeds than hermaphrodites. However, we did not observe any significant difference in seed output between …

Pircēju apmierinātības uzlabošanas iespējas veikalu tīklā ”top!”.

2021

Bakalaura darba mērķis – pamatojoties uz teorētiskām atziņām un veiktā pētījuma rezultātiem, izpētīt pircēju apmierinātību, par praktisku piemēru izvēloties veikalu tīklu “top!”, atklāt nepilnības pircēju apmierinātībā, sniegt ieteikumus to uzlabošanai. Darbs sastāv no trim nodaļām. Pirmajā autore sniedz pircēju apmierinātības teorētisku skaidrojumu, otrajā tiek raksturots pētāmais uzņēmums “top!”, trešajā nodaļā – apkopoti autores veiktā pētījuma dati. Noslēgumā apkopoti secinājumi un izteikti priekšlikumi.

Effects of ectopic expression of NGAL on doxorubicin sensitivity.

2012

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL, a.k.a Lnc2) is a member of the lipocalin family which has diverse roles including stabilizing matrix metalloproteinase-9 from auto-degradation and as siderocalins which are important in the transport of iron. NGAL also has important biological functions involved in immunity and inflammation as well as responses to kidney damage. NGAL expression has also been associated with certain neoplasia and is important in the metastasis of breast cancer. Many advanced cancer patients have elevated levels of NGAL in their urine and it has been proposed that NGAL may be a prognostic indicator for certain cancers (e.g. breast, brain, and others). NGAL exp…

Large-scale genotyping identifies 41 new loci associated with breast cancer risk

2013

Journal article Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Common variants at 27 loci have been identified as associated with susceptibility to breast cancer, and these account for ~9% of the familial risk of the disease. We report here a meta-analysis of 9 genome-wide association studies, including 10,052 breast cancer cases and 12,575 controls of European ancestry, from which we selected 29,807 SNPs for further genotyping. These SNPs were genotyped in 45,290 cases and 41,880 controls of European ancestry from 41 studies in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC). The SNPs were genotyped as part of a collaborative genotyping experiment involving four consortia (Collaborat…

Trophic ecology of piscivorous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) in subarctic lakes with contrasting food-web structures

2019

The trophic ecology of piscivorous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus (L.); charr) in the food webs of large subarctic lakes is not well understood. We assessed charr diets, parasites, growth, maturity, and stable isotope ratios in Fennoscandian subarctic lakes dominated by monomorphic or polymorphic whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus (L.)) populations. Charr density was low in all lakes, except in profundal habitats. Charr shifted to piscivory at small size (16–25 cm total length) and consumed a range of prey-fish sizes (2–25 cm). Cannibalism was observed in a few individuals from one monomorphic whitefish lake. Charr matured at 37–51 cm (5–8 years old), grew to 52–74 cm maximum observed length …

Particle radiation in microelectronics

2012

The unavoidable presence of particle radiation in space and on the ground combined with constantly evolving technology necessitates a deep understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying radiation effects in materials and electronic devices. This thesis provides an overview of the different radiation environments, with a review of the interaction mechanisms between energetic particles and matter. In this work a new semi-empirical model for estimating the electronic stopping force of solids for heavy ions is introduced. Radiation effects occurring in microelectronics due to particle radiation are also discussed with a brief introduction to radiation hardness assurance (RHA) testing of elect…
