Extremely efficient evaluation of chromatic dispersion in realistic photonic crystal fibers

2004

We present a fast and accurate procedure for the evaluation of chromatic dispersion in photonic crystal fibers. It combines an iterative Fourier technique to compute the propagation constant at any fixed wavelength and an analytical approach to calculate its derivatives.

Suppression of pulse pedestal using nonlinear optical loop mirrors in grating-compensated dispersion-managed fiber transmission systems

2006

Pulse pedestal suppression by nonlinear optical loop mirrors is utilized to reduce the intersymbol interference caused by the group delay ripples of a real grating profile in dispersion-managed communication systems compensated by chirped fiber gratings.

N-TiO2 Photocatalysts highly active under visible irradiation for NOX abatement and 2-propanol oxidation

2013

N-doped TiO2 powders were prepared by two different sol-gel methods. Samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET specific surface area measurements (SSA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). XPS measurements revealed a signal at 400 eV assignable to nitrogen in the form of Ti-N-O. EPR signals are attributed to molecular NO trapped with cavities/defects possibly interacting with oxygen vacancies. The photocatalytic activity under UV and visible light was determined following the abatement of NOx and the photodegradation of 2-propanol in gas-solid systems. N…

Graphene oxide-silica nanohybrids as fillers for PA6 based nanocomposites

2014

Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by oxidation of graphite flakes by a mixture of H2SO4/H3PO4 and KMnO4 based on Marcano's method. Two different masterbatches containing GO (33.3%) and polyamide-6 (PA6) (66.7%) were prepared both via solvent casting in formic acid and by melt mixing in a mini-extruder (Haake). The two masterbatches were then used to prepare PA6-based nanocomposites with a content of 2% in GO. For comparison, a nanocomposite by direct mixing of PA6 and GO (2%) and PA6/graphite nanocomposites were prepared, too. The oxidation of graphite into GO was assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Micro-Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrosco…

In-situ study of multi-phase indium nanoparticle growth on/into CuPcF4 organic thin film in ultra-high vacuum conditions

2021

Abstract We study the in-situ growth of a nanocomposite material consisting of a thin CuPcF4 film and multiphase/multidimensional indium nanoparticles, self-organizing on the surface and in the bulk, at various stages of thermal deposition of metal on an organic film under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The analysis of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) images provided valuable information about the evolution of morphology, size, density, and distribution of indium nanoparticles upon indium deposition. These 2D/3D ultra-small nano-objects turned out to have not only body-centered tetragonal (bct) crystal structure, typical for bulk indium, but also unusual face-centered…

Thermal stability of Au–TiO2 nanocomposite films prepared by direct liquid injection CVD

2015

Abstract Nanocomposite films composed of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) embedded in a TiO 2 matrix have been prepared by direct liquid injection chemical vapor deposition process, using preformed nanoparticles and titanium isopropoxide as precursors. The spherical AuNPs about 4.1 nm in diameter were synthesized by using gold (III) chloride trihydrate and stabilized by thiol ligands. The depositions were carried out by performing at first oxide deposition, then gold nanoparticle one and capping with oxide. The morphology, structure; the chemical state and optical properties of nanocomposite films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman, X-ray photoelectron and UV–Vis absorption…

Giant Enhancement in the Supercapacitance of NiFe–Graphene Nanocomposites Induced by a Magnetic Field

2019

The rapid rise in energy demand in the past years has prompted a search for low-cost alternatives for energy storage, supercapacitors being one of the most important devices. It is shown that a dramatic enhancement (≈1100%, from 155 to 1850 F g-1 ) of the specific capacitance of a hybrid stimuli-responsive FeNi3 -graphene electrode material can be achieved when the charge/discharge cycling is performed in the presence of an applied magnetic field of 4000 G. This result is related to an unprecedented magnetic-field-induced metal segregation of the FeNi3 nanoparticles during the cycling, which results in the appearance of small Ni clusters (<5 nm) and, consequently, in an increase in pseudoca…

Dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide components: Going practical

2013

Surface plasmon propagating modes supported by metal/dielectric interfaces in various configurations can be used for radiation guiding similarly to conventional dielectric waveguides. Plasmonic waveguides offer two attractive features: subdiffraction mode confinement and the presence of conducting elements at the mode-field maximum. The first feature can be exploited to realize ultrahigh density of nanophotonics components, whereas the second feature enables the development of dynamic components controlling the plasmon propagation with ultralow signals, minimizing heat dissipation in switching elements. While the first feature is yet to be brought close to the domain of practical applicatio…

Surface plasmon subwavelength optics.

2003

International audience; Surface plasmons are waves that propagate along the surface of a conductor. By altering the structure of a metal's surface, the properties of surface plasmons- in particular their interaction with light-can be tailored, which offers the potential for developing new types of photonic device. This could lead to miniaturized photonic circuits with length scales that are much smaller than those currently achieved. Surface plasmons are being explored for their potential in subwavelength optics, data storage, light generation, microscopy and bio-photonics.
