Hanging disguised as bondage: accidental or suicidal death?

The concept of autoerotic asphyxiation refers to the use of devices or substances intended to enhance one's arousal by inducing cerebral hypoxia, which can involuntarily lead to death. Although in most cases death occurs accidentally, it is nonetheless true that the same devices might be used by the practitioners in order to attempt suicide. The case of a 34-year-old practitioner of autoerotic asphyxiation found dead in his apartment with bondage-like ligatures and masking is reported here. The case raised some issues concerning the accidental or suicidal nature of the act. Emergency toe-to-hand transfer for post-traumatic finger reconstruction: A multicenter case series

Abstract Background The aim of this paper was to evaluate the outcomes of a homogenous series of emergency with a toe-to-hand transfer reconstructions with a different timing: immediate (same surgical step with the debridement), primary (in the first 24 h), early (24–72 h after the debridement) or delayed (72 h-7 days). Materials and methods Between 2001 and 2011, 31 patients received an immediate reconstruction with a toe-to-hand transfer. Data on indications, timing, type of surgery, complications and outcomes (sensory and motor recovery, patient satisfaction) were extrapolated and recorded. Brain lateralization of metrical accenting in musicians.

The perception of meter, or the alternation of strong and weak beats, was assessed in musically trained listeners through magnetoencephalography. Metrical accents were examined with no temporal disruption of the serial grouping of tones. Results showed an effect of metrical processing among identical standard tones in the left hemisphere, with larger responses on strong than on weak beats. Moreover, processing of occasional increases in intensity (phenomenal accents) varied as a function of metrical position in the left hemisphere, but not in the right. Our findings support the view of a relatively early, left-hemispheric effect of metrical processing in musicians.

Imaging the visual autokinetic illusion with fMRI

During fixation of a stationary, dim light-emitting diode (LED) in complete darkness, a subtle, apparent motion is perceived which is called autokinesis. This autokinetic illusion increases with increasing fixation time. Eleven healthy subjects were examined by fMRI while fixating an LED in darkness for 35 s. BOLD signal changes of the first and the second half of the fixation period were compared. While the stimulus was the same for both periods, perception differed in that autokinesis was more pronounced in the second half. Photobleaching effects onin vivoskin autofluorescence lifetime

The autofluorescence lifetime of healthy human skin was measured using excitation provided by a picosecond diode laser operating at a wavelength of 405 nm and with fluorescence emission collected at 475 and 560 nm. In addition, spectral and temporal responses of healthy human skin and intradermal nevus in the spectral range 460 to 610 nm were studied before and after photobleaching. A decrease in the autofluorescences lifetimes changes was observed after photobleaching of human skin. This commentary highlights key points, basic ideas, and future outlooks presented by Eastep et al. (2012) in Frontiers in Physiology-Systems Biology. The authors have provided an interesting investigation about the successful use of an environmentally friendly product derived from plants as a larvicidal agent to control mosquito populations as well as a substance that could alter the vector competence of mosquitoes for arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses). Aerosol properties of the Eyjafjallajökull ash derived from sun photometer and satellite observations over the Iberian Peninsula

The Eyjafjallajökull ash that crossed over Spain and Portugal on 6e12 May 2010 has been monitored by a set of operational sun photometer sites within AERONET-RIMA and satellite sensors. The sun photometer observations (aerosol optical depth, coarse mode concentrations) and ash products from IASI and SEVIRI satellite sensors, together with FLEXPART simulations of particle transport, allow identifying the volcanic aerosols. From local structure to nanosecond recrystallization dynamics in AgInSbTe phase-change materials

Phase-change optical memories are based on the astonishingly rapid nanosecond-scale crystallization of nanosized amorphous 'marks' in a polycrystalline layer. Models of crystallization exist for the commercially used phase-change alloy Ge(2)Sb(2)Te(5) (GST), but not for the equally important class of Sb-Te-based alloys.
