Authorship vs. Assemblage in Digital Media
2021
This chapter outlines an approach to complement current analyses on agencies of storytelling in digital environments. As our everyday life and meaning-making are increasingly entangled with digital platforms such as those of social media services, ways to critically examine digital media as an environment in literary theory are urgently needed – something that the existing analyses have mostly ignored. The particular point of contention in this chapter is the concept of authorship which has gone hand in hand with the understanding of authoring as a work of distinct agents, as it fails to acknowledge the ways in which human agency is entangled with more-than-human actors within digital envir…

On the aestheticization of technologized bodies : a portrait of a cyborg(ed) form of agency
2017
Discussions revolving around cyborgs seldom include aesthetics, let alone propose aesthetics as an inextricable part of the phenomenon of the cyborg. Rather, the term “cyborg”, a contraction of “cybernetic organism”, evokes a figure of the (hu)man- machine. In the field of social and political sciences, the cyborg is designated a human-machine hybrid, a metaphor of humans becoming machinelike, or a portrait of (political) agency in an era of high technology. These approaches promote a figure of technologized bodies, that is, the cyborg as a figure of technologically dominated and altered bodies. I will sustain that the cyborg contributes to our understanding of agency in the age of high tec…
Vapaa valitsemaan? : musliminaisten päähineen käytön merkityksistä
2017
Tutkimuksen aihe on musliminaisten päähineen (huivi/ hijab) käyttöönsä liittämät merkitykset.
2018
Tutkielma käsittelee nuorille suunnatun matalan kynnyksen ohjaus- ja neuvontapalvelu Ohjaamon asiakkaiden kokemaa osallisuutta ja toimijuutta omassa ohjausprosessissaan ja laajemmin palvelussa. Ohjaamoiden julkilausuttu tavoite on ehkäistä nuorten syrjäytymistä. Toiminnan ytimessä on asiakkai-den osallistaminen myös palvelun itsensä kehittämiseen. Tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten tavoitteet toteutuvat asiakkaiden oman kokemuksen valossa. Tutkielmassa yhdistetään määrälliset ja laadulliset menetelmät. Osalli-suuden kokemusta tarkastellaan viisitasoisen mallin kautta. Siinä alin taso koskee omaa ohjausprosessia ja ylemmät tasot osallistumista ja päätöksentekoa palvelussa laajemmin. Tasomalli…
Emotions in leaders’ enactment of professional agency
2019
Purpose Although there has been an increase in workplace studies on professional agency, few of these have examined the role of emotions in the enactment of agency at work. To date, professional agency has been mainly conceptualised as a goal-oriented, rational activity aimed at influencing a current state of affairs. Challenged by this, this study aims to elaborate the nature and quality of emotions and how they might be connected to the enactment of professional agency. Design/methodology/approach Data are collected in the context of a leadership coaching programme that aimed to promote the leaders’ professional agency over the course of a year. The participants (11 middle-management lea…
Labor as Action: the Human Condition in the Anthropocene
2020
Abstract The Anthropocene has become an umbrella term for the disastrous transgression of ecological safety boundaries by human societies. The impact of this new reality is yet to be fully registered by political theorists. In an attempt to recalibrate the categories of political thought, this article brings Hannah Arendt’s framework of The Human Condition (labor, work, action) into the gravitational pull of the Anthropocene and current knowledge about the Earth System. It elaborates the historical emergence of our capacity to “act in the mode of laboring” during fossil-fueled capitalist modernity, a form of agency relating to our collectively organized laboring processes reminiscent of the…
Constructions of Nonagency in the Clients’ Initial Problem Formulations at the Outset of Psychotherapy
2019
This multiple case study investigated how clients construct nonagentic positions when formulating their problems in the beginning of their first psychotherapy session. The initial problem formulations of nine clients entering psychotherapy were analyzed with a detailed model drawing on discursive methodology, the 10 Discursive Tools model (10DT). We found ten problem formulation categories, each one distinguished by the tool from the 10DT model primarily used to construct nonagency. All clients gave several problem formulations from different categories and constructed nonagentic positions with a variety of discursive tools. When the resulting problem formulation categories were read in com…
Beyond free will : The embodied emergence of conscious agency
2019
Is it possible to reconcile the concept of conscious agency with the view that humans are biological creatures subject to material causality? The problem of conscious agency is complicated by the tendency to attribute autonomous powers of control to conscious processes. In this paper, we offer an embodied process model of conscious agency. We begin with the concept of embodied emergence – the idea that psychological processes are higher-order biological processes, albeit ones that exhibit emergent properties. Although consciousness, experience, and representation are emergent properties of higher-order biological organisms, the capacity for hierarchical regulation is a property of all livin…
Assessing agency of university students: validation of the AUS Scale
2016
Fostering agency as a core component of professionalism is seen as a critical task of higher education. However, the tools for assessing university students’ agency, and the pedagogical and relational resources needed for its development, are lacking. The present study describes the theoretical foundations and factor structure of the newly developed Agency of University Students (AUS) Scale, which assesses students’ course-specific agency. In the factor analysis, ten factors emerged. Four of these – Interest and motivation, Self-efficacy, Competence beliefs and Participation activity – are seen to represent individual resources of agency. The other four factors – Equal treatment, Teacher su…
