The ultimate message : a study of medieval tombstones in ducal Burgundy : 12th-16th centuries

The tombstone has long been neglected by historians. As obituaries and wills, tombstones reveal as much the relationship of the deceased to death that the management of their memory by their heirs. This study first shows the wealth of medieval Burgundy graves goods. Typological diversity adds to the richness of iconography with large amounts of effigial monuments. Tombs materialize burial of prestige. Originally reserved for prelates and princes, burial ad ecclesiam progressively extended to the feudal aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. [EN] The paper concerns the 3D reconstruction and virtual restoration of a painted rock-cut chamber tombs located in the interior of Southern Etruria (Viterbo Province, Central Italy). The tomb was discovered in 1901 in a place named Pranzovico and it dates from the mid-fifth century BC; it has a cross plan with central atrium (decorated with paintings) and three chambers in which there are the rock-cut funerary beds. The paintings have been largely destroyed by illegal excavators in the days immediately following the discovery; during the 20th century it was damaged due to agricultural works in the surroundings and now it is partially filled up. The building of the high-speed rail track linking the Rhine to the Rhone led to the discovery of two Bell Beaker burials in an Iron Age cemetery located in the plain to the east of Dijon. The Tilles plain is an alluvial environment, shaped by the valleys of the Tille and the Ouche and populated since Late Prehistory, particularly during the Bell Beaker and Early Bronze periods, which have yielded settlements located on the rivers. AbstractA new study of the patere baccellate from the Tomba del carrettino at Ca’ Morta offers the opportunity to re-examine the typology of the ribbed bowls of Vetulonia/Colmar type and to re-evaluate their funerary contexts. These vessels appear in central and southern Etruria at the end of the eighth and the beginning of the seventh century BC, the site of Vetulonia being considered as their main production site.Ferdinando Sciacca’s (2005) classification of the ribbed bowls of Vetulonia/Colmar type is supported by solid evidence ; it has advanced the subject significantly, but Sciacca’s model nevertheless raises some questions in terms of the hierarchy of the criteria that were chosen.Du…

La construction d'un complexe d'entreprises au hameau de Merchin, au sein d'une zone sensible de découvertes archéologiques, a motivé plusieurs prescriptions de fouille qui se sont déroulées entre l'été 2008 et l'été 2009. Elles ont porté sur un ensemble de structures néolithiques, sur un complexe à vocation agro-pastoral protohistorique/antique, et, enfin, sur une nécropole du premier Moyen Âge.
