Visualization of tonal content with self-organizing maps and self-similarity matrices

This article presents a dynamic model of tonality perception based on a short-term memory model and a self-organizing map (SOM). The model can be used for dynamic visualization of perceived tonal content, making it possible to examine the clarity and locus of tonality at any given point of time. This article also presents a method for the visualization of tonal structure using self-similarity matrices. The methods are applied to compositions of J. S. Bach, S. Barber, and J. Pachelbel. Finally, a real-time application embracing the tonality perception model is presented.
The digital outcry: What incites participation behavior in an online firestorm?

Brands, celebrities, or politicians are increasingly facing enormous online outrages in response to moral misconducts. These online firestorms are characterized by high message volume, indignant tonality, and negative opinion climate. Based on the concept of moral panics, this article analyzes why people join online firestorms. We argue that participation behavior is driven by a moral compass and a desire for social recognition. Results of an experiment and a content analysis of user comments show that a higher number of participants decreases users’ willingness to participate but fosters compliance with the prevalent opinion and tonality of the comments. Importance of Enharmonic Tone Spelling in Computational Analysis of Tonal Structure

This paper will discuss various instances of enharmonic spellings of chords. Selected characteristic enharmonic chords in compositions of the tonal period will be presented. The paper's main purpose is to show: (1) the importance of the enharmonic spelling of chords/tones in the automated analysis of tonal music, (2) how the analysis of the relative strength of a given key range is modified when we take into account its enharmonic spellings, (3) the problem of enharmonic spelling in characteristic chords (For example in the Tristan chord), (4) the interdependence between the enharmonic spelling in a given piece of music and the whole tonal structure (relationship between given key ranges).

The methods used in tonality perception research are various, like counting the appearance rate of tonic, accumulating the duration of tones in a scale, the "probe-tone" technique, etc. However, the purpose of different methods is the same that is to try to build a model of tonality perception. A Psychoacoustic Model of Harmonic Cadences - A Preliminary Report

This report presents a psychoacoustically derived computational model of the perceived distance between any two major or minor triads, the degree of activity created by any given pair of triads, and the cadential effectiveness of three-triad progressions. It also provides statistical analyses of the ratings given by thirty-five participants for the ?similarity? and ?fit? of triads in a pair, and the ?cadential effectiveness? of three-triad progressions. Multiple regressions show that the model provides highly significant predictions of the experimentally obtained ratings. People report that specific emotional reactions accompany the perception of tonal relations during listening to tonal music. These reactions are not restricted only to people living in the Western culture. Different types of tonality which are observed in all musical cultures seem to evoke similarly strong emotional reactions.
