Immune-inflammatory and metabolic effects of high dose furosemide plus hypertonic saline solution (HSS) treatment in cirrhotic subjects with refracto…

2016

Introduction Patients with chronic liver diseases are usually thin as a result of hypermetabolism and malnutrition expressed by reduced levels of leptin and impairment of other adyponectins such as visfatin. Aims We evaluated the metabolic and inflammatory effects of intravenous high-dose furosemide plus hypertonic saline solutions (HSS) compared with repeated paracentesis and a standard oral diuretic schedule, in patients with cirrhosis and refractory ascites. Methods 59 consecutive cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites unresponsive to outpatient treatment. Enrolled subjects were randomized to treatment with intravenous infusion of furosemide (125-250mg⁄bid) plus small volumes of HSS …

Titrated hypertonic/hyperoncotic solution for hypotensive fluid resuscitation during uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock in rats.

2002

In volume- or pressure-controlled hemorrhagic shock (HS) a bolus intravenous infusion of hypertonic/hyperoncotic solution (HHS) proved beneficial compared to isotonic crystalloid solutions. During uncontrolled HS in animals, however, HHS by bolus increased blood pressure unpredictably, and increased blood loss and mortality. We hypothesized that a titrated i.v. infusion of HHS, compared to titrated lactated Ringer's solution (LR), for hypotensive fluid resuscitation during uncontrolled HS reduces fluid requirement, does not increase blood loss, and improves survival. We used our three-phased uncontrolled HS outcome model in rats. HS phase I began with blood withdrawal of 3 ml/100g over 15 mi…

Comparison of post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) after isometric and isotonic exercise on vertical jump performance.

2021

Purpose This study aimed to compare the post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) induced by isometric and isotonic exercise on vertical jump performance. Methods 18 healthy trained men (25.8±2.7 years; 78.4±8.2 kg; 175.7±6.1 cm; 25.4±1.8 BMI; 126.72±10.8 kg squat 1-RM) volunteered for this study. They randomly performed two different PAPE protocols: Isotonic squats (ISOTS), which consisted of 2 sets of 3 repetitions at 75% of one-maximum repetition (1-RM); and isometric squats (ISOMS), which consisted of 2 sets of 4 seconds of submaximal (75% of 1-RM) isometric contraction at 90°-knee flexion. Countermovement jump (CMJ) height was tested at baseline and 4 minutes after each condition…

Effects of a single-dose hypertonic saline hydroxyethyl starch on cerebral blood flow, long-term outcome, neurogenesis, and neuronal survival after c…

2012

The beneficial effects of hypertonic saline on neuronal survival and on cerebral blood flow have been shown in several animal models of global and focal brain ischemia. Because of the potential benefits of hypertonic solutions, it is hypothesized that hydroxyethyl starch enhances cerebral blood flow and improves long-term outcome after cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an animal model.Laboratory animal study.University animal research laboratory.Fifty-nine male Sprague-Dawley rats.Rats were randomized to receive either 7.2% saline/6% hypertonic saline hydroxyethyl starch (4 mL/kg) or vehicle (NaCl 0.9 %) after 9 mins of asphyxic cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscita…

Hypertonic fluid resuscitation from subarachnoid hemorrhage in rats: A comparison between small volume resuscitation and mannitol

2005

Abstract Objective Death and severe morbidity after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) are mainly caused by global cerebral ischemia through increased intracranial pressure (ICP) and decreased cerebral blood flow (CBF). We have recently demonstrated neuroprotective effects of small volume resuscitation (7.5% saline in combination with 6% dextran 70) in an animal model of SAH, leading to normalization of increased ICP, reduced morphological damage and improved neurological recovery. In the present study, we compared the concept of small volume resuscitation represented by two clinically licenced hypertonic–hyperoncotic saline solutions with the routinely used hyperosmotic agent–mannitol–and inves…

Short-Term Effects of Hypertonic Saline Solution in Acute Heart Failure and Long-Term Effects of a Moderate Sodium Restriction in Patients With Compe…

2011

INTRODUCTION: Hypertonic saline solution (HSS) and a moderate Na restriction plus high furosemide dose showed beneficial effects in compensated heart failure (HF), in short and long terms. The study was aimed to verify the effects of this combination on hospitalization time, readmissions and mortality in patients in New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III. METHOD: Chronic ischemic or nonischemic cardiomyopathy uncompensated patients with HF in NYHA III functional class with ejection fraction <40%, serum creatinine <2.5 mg/dL, blood urea nitrogen <60 mg/dL and reduced urinary volume were single-blind randomized in 2 groups: the first group received a 30-minute intravenous infusion of fur…

Least Energy Solutions with Sign Information for Parametric Double Phase Problems

2022

We consider a parametric double phase Dirichlet problem. In the reaction there is a superlinear perturbation term which satisfies a weak Nehari-type monotonicity condition. Using the Nehari manifold method, we show that for all parameters below a critical value, the problem has at least three nontrivial solutions all with sign information. The critical parameter value is precisely identified in terms of the spectrum of the lower exponent part of the differential operator.

The effect of the type of colloid on the efficacy of hypertonic saline colloid mixtures in hemorrhagic shock: dextran versus hydroxyethyl starch

1993

Colloids increase and prolong the efficacy of hypertonic saline solutions in hemorrhagic shock. We compared the efficacy of dextran 60 and hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 200,000/0.5 at iso-oncotic concentrations of 6.5 or 6% in a 7.5% NaCI solution. Thirty-two rabbits were bled to maintain a mean arterial pressure at 35 mmHg. Twenty-five percent of the shed blood volume was replaced after 40 min by bolus infusion either with hypertonic dextran (HS-DEX) (n = 16) or with hypertonic hydroxyethyl starch (HS-HES) (n = 16). The animals were then observed for a 120-min period. In both groups immediate and complete restoration of cardiovascular function was achieved in up to 30 min and adequate restorat…

Thermodynamics of yeast cell osmoregulation: Passive mechanisms

1996

International audience; The response of yeast cells to osmotic pressure variations of the medium were studied through the kinetics of cell-volume modifications corresponding to the mass transfer of water and solutes. Osmotic variations were made by modification of the concentration of an external binary solution (polyol/water) without nutritive components. Two phases were distinguished in the thermodynamic response. A transient phase following an osmotic shift, which is characterised by rapid water transfer across the cell membrane and whose kinetics determine cell viability; then, a steady-state phase is reached when the cell volume becomes quasi-constant. The response of the cell during t…

Anoxia in vitro does not induce neuronal swelling or death

1996

To improve the understanding of neuronal cell swelling in cerebral ischemia, cell volume regulation, viability, intracellular electrolytes, and lactate production of Neuro-2A neuroblastoma cells were studied using an in vitro model. The volume regulatory capacity of Neuro-2A cells was assessed after incubation in hypo- and hypertonic media. Anoxia was studied alone and together with inhibition of glycolysis by iodoacetate. Reducing the tonicity of the incubation medium to 250, 200, or 150 mosm/l caused immediate swelling followed by a regulatory volume decrease within 20 min, which, however, was not complete. The final cell volume after regulation depended on the tonicity of the medium and …
