Safety and performance of a suprachoroidal sensor for telemetric measurement of intraocular pressure in the EYEMATE-SC trial

2023

AimTo investigate the safety and performance of a telemetric suprachoroidal intraocular pressure (IOP) sensor (EYEMATE-SC) and the accuracy of its IOP measurements in open angle glaucoma (OAG) patients undergoing simultaneous non-penetrating glaucoma surgery (NPGS).MethodsProspective, multicentre, open-label, single-arm, interventional clinical trial. Twenty-four eyes of 24 patients with OAG regularly scheduled for NPGS (canaloplasty or deep sclerectomy) were simultaneously implanted with an EYEMATE-SC sensor. Six-month follow-up on the sensor’s safety and performance as well as on the level of agreement between the EYEMATE-SC measurements and IOP measurements with Goldmann applanation tono…

Comparison of subconjunctival microinvasive glaucoma surgery and trabeculectomy

2021

Purpose To assess surgical success and the post-operative development of intraocular pressure between XEN45® gelstent, Preserflo® MicroShunt and trabeculectomy with mitomycin C. Methods Data from 105 eyes from 105 patients of matched cases with refractory open-angle glaucoma, who underwent surgery between January 2019, and August 2020, were evaluated. Patients underwent either stand-alone XEN gelstent insertion with Mitomycin C, stand-alone Preserflo with Mitomycin C or trabeculectomy with Mitomycin C. The primary outcome was the proportion of complete surgical success at 6 months post-operatively (i.e. intraocular pressure between 5mmHg and 18mmHg, no revision surgery, no loss of light per…

Tear production and intraocular pressure values in clinically normal eyes of whooper swans (<i>Cygnus cygnus</i>)

2018

The objective of this study was to determine the normal range of tear production and values of intraocular pressure (IOP) in clinically normal eyes of whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus). A total of 86 birds: 81 cygnets (6-10 weeks old) and 5 moulting - adult swans (3-6 years old) were examined in this study. Both eyes of all birds underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, including evaluation of tear production with the phenol red thread test (PRTT) and the assessment of the IOP by rebound tonometry, employing the TonoVet® device. The mean ± standard deviation of PRTT values were as follows: all cygnets (81) 22.59±3.48 mm/15s, male cygnets (45) 22.64±3.54 mm/15s, female cygnets (36) 22.53±3.4…

Heritability of Intraocular Pressure in Older Female Twins

2006

Purpose To examine the heritability of intraocular pressure (IOP) among older women not diagnosed as having glaucoma. Design Cross-sectional twin study. Participants 94 monozygotic (MZ) and 96 dizygotic (DZ) female twin pairs aged 63–76 years and not diagnosed as having glaucoma. Methods Intraocular pressure was measured using a noncontact tonometer. The contributions of genetic and environmental factors to individual differences in IOP were estimated by applying an independent pathway model to twin data. Main Outcome Measures Contribution of genetic and environmental effects to the variation in IOP among MZ and DZ twins. Results Mean IOP of the study population was 14.1 mmHg (± standard de…

Comparison of Intraocular Pressure During Corneal Flap Preparation Between a Femtosecond Laser and a Mechanical Microkeratome in Porcine Eyes

2011

To compare the increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) during corneal flap preparation in porcine eyes when using a femtosecond laser or a mechanical microkeratome. The present study was conducted at a university hospital and a private clinic. The vitreous IOP was directly measured with a cannula through the optic nerve in 24 porcine globes (n = 12 for each device). In the first procedure (worst-case procedure), the eye interface was lowered against the globe until abortion of the docking maneuver when using the IntraLase femtosecond laser (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, CA) or the suction ring was pressed very firmly against the globe when using the Amadeus microkeratome (Ziemer Ophthalmic…

Intraocular Pressure Telemetry for Managing Glaucoma during the COVID-19 Pandemic

2021

Purpose To evaluate in glaucoma patients the feasibility and use of remote monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP) with an implanted telemetry sensor during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown. Design Cross-sectional study. Participants Patients previously implanted with a telemetric IOP sensor (Eyemate; Implandata GmbH) were included. Methods Intraocular pressure measurements acquired by the patients during the lockdown were collected by physicians who were located remotely. A questionnaire was sent to 10 participating study centers to evaluate the clinical impact of remote monitoring of IOP via the IOP sensor system. Main Outcome Measures Number of patients who obtained home…

Suture Removal After Trabeculectomy With Fornix-based Conjunctival Flap Leads to Faster Visual Recovery but Not Reduced Astigmatism

2019

PReCIS:: The closing limbal suture after trabeculectomy with a fornix-based conjunctival flap plays no critical role in the development of corneal astigmatism and intraocular pressure (IOP). A standard removal is not recommended. Purpose To investigate the effect of removal of the conjunctival suture after trabeculectomy with fornix-based conjunctival flap on corneal astigmatism, visual acuity, and IOP. Methods Eighty-seven cases of trabeculectomy with mitomycin C with a fornix-based conjunctival flap performed in the eyes of 82 patients (5 patients underwent bilateral trabeculectomy) were enrolled in a prospective randomized study. All surgeries were conducted by the same surgeon (J.W.) in…

The Size of Subconjunctival Preparation Does Not Influence the Outcome of Trabeculectomy With Mitomycin C

2014

PURPOSE To compare the outcome of fornix-based trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (MMC) using 2 different sizes of subconjunctival preparation (36 mm² compared with 72 mm²). METHODS Prospective, randomized interventional case series. STUDY POPULATION Patients 18 to 85 years of age with open-angle glaucoma and progressive visual field defects under maximum tolerated medical therapy were randomized to undergo initial fornix-based trabeculectomy with MMC (0.2 mg/mL for 5 min) with subconjunctival preparation of 6×6 mm (group A) or 8×9 mm (group B). Main outcome parameters were: intraocular pressure (IOP), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), number of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) injections, and laser s…

The Evonik-Mainz Eye Care-Study (EMECS): Development of an Expert System for Glaucoma Risk Detection in a Working Population

2015

Purpose To develop an expert system for glaucoma screening in a working population based on a human expert procedure using images of optic nerve head (ONH), visual field (frequency doubling technology, FDT) and intraocular pressure (IOP). Methods 4167 of 13037 (32%) employees between 40 and 65 years of Evonik Industries were screened. An experienced glaucoma expert (JW) assessed papilla parameters and evaluated all individual screening results. His classification into “no glaucoma”, “possible glaucoma” and “probable glaucoma” was defined as “gold standard”. A screening model was developed which was tested versus the gold-standard. This model took into account the assessment of the ONH. Valu…
