Laccase: A Review of Its Past and Its Future in Bioremediation
2011
Laccases are multicopper proteins that use molecular oxygen to oxidize a broad spectrum of organic compounds by a radical-catalyzed reaction mechanism. Many articles over the past 15 years have touted the diverse potential applications of laccase in various biotechnological processes. This review covers the natural roles of the enzyme, its structural properties, substrates, reaction mechanism, and inhibitors, as well as its applications regarding the detoxification and bioremediation of polluted wastewaters and soils. Other applications are briefly covered as well. The authors critically assess the advantages, shortcomings, and future needs relating to laccase availability, effectiveness, a…
The Diagnosis of Disease by Element Analysis
1988
The elemental composition of the human body images in principle the elements of the periodic system. In the literature, about 80 elements are reported to occur in the human body and the number is expected to increase by the introduction of methods more sensitive in detection. The elemental composition in reference man as published (1) is summarized in tab. 1. From the major elements in reference man, the determination of the elements nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chlorine and magnesium are of importance for the diagnosis of diseases. The importance of the element determination for the diagnosis of diseases is also documented by the numbers of element determinations done …

Gender differences and gender convergence in alcohol use over the past three decades (1984–2008), The HUNT Study, Norway
2016
Background: To examine changes in men‘s and women’s drinking in Norway over a 20-year period, in order to learn whether such changes have led to gender convergence in alcohol drinking. Methods: Repeated cross-sectional studies (in 1984–86, 1995–97, and 2006–08) of a large general population living in a geographically defined area (county) in Norway. Information about alcohol drinking is based on self-report questionnaires. Not all measures were assessed in all three surveys. Results: Adult alcohol drinking patterns have changed markedly over a 20-year period. Abstaining has become rarer while consumption and rates of recent drinking and problematic drinking have increased. Most changes were…
Massive digoxin intoxication in childhood.
1978
In a 10 year old boy 8 hours after taking about 16 mg beta-acetyl-digoxin a maximum serum digoxin level of 31.8 ng/ml was measured radioimmunologically. This is the highest digitalis level in childhood described to date. The serum potassium level rose to 7.4 mmol/l. Complete atrio-ventricular block, and salves of ventricular premature beats were the most serious rhythm disturbances. The absence of life threatening rhythm disturbances is attributed to the early use of diphenylhydantoin in small frequent doses.
Physical Activity in Adolescence as a Predictor of Alcohol and Illicit Drug Use in Early Adulthood: A Longitudinal Population-Based Twin Study
2009
AbstractWe investigated prospectively whether physical activity level in adolescence predicts use of alcohol and illicit drugs in early adulthood. We studied 4,240 individual twins (1,870 twin pairs). We classified those who consistently reported frequent leisure physical activity at ages 16, 17 and 181/2 as persistent exercisers, those exercising less than three times monthly as persistently inactive, and all others as occasional exercisers. To control for familial confounds, within-family analyses compared activity-substance use associations in co-twins discordant for baseline physical activity. Individual-based analyses showed no clear association between baseline physical activity and s…
Chronic quercetin feeding decreases plasma concentrations of salicylamide phase II metabolites in pigs following oral administration.
2011
We investigated acute effects and effects after chronic intake of the orally administered flavonol quercetin on pharmacokinetics of salicylamide metabolites (SAM) after oral administration of salicylamide in pigs. Salicylamide (8 mg/kg body weight) was orally administered to seven pigs either without or with quercetin (10 mg/kg body weight). Additionally, salicylamide was administered to five pigs that had received a diet supplemented with the flavonol for 1 week. Daily quercetin intake was 10 mg/kg in these animals. Co-ingestion of quercetin with the drug did not alter area under the concentration-time curve (AUC(0→∞)), time to achieve maximum plasma concentration (t(max)), mean residence …
Effects of typical inducers on olfactory xenobiotic-metabolizing enzyme, transporter, and transcription factor expression in rats.
2010
International audience; Several xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes (XMEs) have been identified in the olfactory mucosa (OM) of mammals. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of these enzymes have been little explored. In particular, information on the expression of the transcriptional factors in this tissue is quite limited. The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of five typical inducers, Aroclor 1254, 3-methylcholanthrene, dexamethasone, phenobarbital, and ethoxyquin, on the activities and mRNA expression of several XMEs in the OM and in the liver of rats. We also evaluated the effects of these treatments on the mRNA expression of transcription factors an…
Explanatory Psychological Factors of Inconsistently Condom Use among Spanish University Students: Gender Differences
2020
Abstract More than 50% of Spanish youth does not use of condoms correctly and consistently. University students are a particular population at high risk of the HIV infection, other STIs and unwanted pregnancies. The influence of psychological variables in using of condom is analyzed by gender and type of sexual relationship. A total of 256 females and 168 males were assessed (Mage= 20.62; SD = 2.16). A regression logistic analysis showed that sexual sensation seeking appears as an explanatory variable of inconsistently condom use in both females and males in vaginal intercourse, steady relationship intercourse and sex under the alcohol and other drugs effects (adjusted odds ratio between 1.…
Traits that define the different alcohol intensive consume type during the practice of "botellon".
2012
