Cueing complex animations: Does direction of attention foster learning processes?
2011
Abstract The time course of learners’ processing of a complex animation was studied using a dynamic diagram of a piano mechanism. Over successive repetitions of the material, two forms of cueing (standard colour cueing and anti-cueing) were administered either before or during the animated segment of the presentation. An uncued group and two other control conditions were also employed. Development of an internal representation of the movements depicted in the animation was evaluated through participant demonstrations of the mechanism’s operation on a replica piano mechanism. Eye tracking (fixation lengths) indicated that overall, conventional visuospatially-based cueing was largely ineffect…
Visual Attention in Virtual Reality Settings: An Abstract
2019
Virtual reality, VR, is challenging marketers to understand both brand interaction and the customer experience at the point of sale. In order to test the usefulness of VR in retailing, research must address how the customer’s visual attention in a VR setting affects his/her behavior. There are two main drivers for this research. First, there has been an enormous growth in recent years in the use of neurophysiological methods to measure visual attention. At the store level, previous works show that attention to products measured through eye tracking influences consumer decision. Second, VR is being increasingly adopted by brands, but research is lacking into comparisons between VR formats. W…
Interaction between turbulent structures and particles in roughened channel
2016
Abstract The distribution of inertial particles in turbulent flows is highly non-uniform and is driven by the local dynamics of the turbulent structures of the underlying carrier flow field. In the specific context of dilute particle-laden wall-bounded flows, deposition and resuspension mechanisms are dominated by the interaction between inertial particles and coherent turbulent structures characteristic of the wall region. The macroscopic behavior of these two-phase systems is influenced by particle inertia, which plays a role at the microscale of a single dispersed element. These turbulent structures, which control the turbulent regeneration cycles, are strongly affected by the wall rough…
FRIPON: a worldwide network to track incoming meteoroids
2020
Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receiver…
Algoritmi krustvārdu mīklu veidošanai
2020
How Quickly Can We Predict Users’ Ratings on Aesthetic Evaluations of Websites? Employing Machine Learning on Eye-Tracking Data
2020
This study examines how quickly we can predict users’ ratings on visual aesthetics in terms of simplicity, diversity, colorfulness, craftsmanship. To predict users’ ratings, first we capture gaze behavior while looking at high, neutral, and low visually appealing websites, followed by a survey regarding user perceptions on visual aesthetics towards the same websites. We conduct an experiment with 23 experienced users in online shopping, capture gaze behavior and through employing machine learning we examine how fast we can accurately predict their ratings. The findings show that after 25 s we can predict ratings with an error rate ranging from 9% to 11% depending on which facet of visual ae…
Tracking your detector performance: How to grow an effective training set in tracking-by-detection methods
2015
In many tracking-by-detection approaches, a self-learning strategy is adopted to augment the training set with new positive and negative instances, and to refine the classifier weights. Previous works focus mainly on the learning algorithm and assume the detector is never wrong while classifying samples at the current frame; the most confident sample is chosen as the target, and the training set is augmented with samples selected in its surrounding area. A wrong choice of such samples may degrade the classifier parameters and cause drifting during tracking. In this paper, the focus is on how samples are chosen while retraining the classifier. A particle filtering framework is used to infer …
Coherent Microscopy for 3-D Movement Monitoring and Super-Resolved Imaging
2010
In this chapter we present three types of microscopy-related configurations while the first one is used for 3-D movement monitoring of the inspected samples, the second one is used for super-resolved 3-D imaging, and the last one presents an overview digital holographic microscopy applications. The first configuration is based on temporal tracking of secondary reflected speckles when imaged by properly defocused optics. We validate the proposed scheme by using it to monitor 3-D spontaneous contraction of rat’s cardiac muscle cells while allowing nanometric tracking accuracy without interferometric recording. The second configuration includes projection of temporally varying speckle patterns…
Object tracking in medical imaging using a 2D active mesh system
2003
International audience; Abstract: This article proposes a technique for tracking moving organs in medical imaging. It can be split into two stages. We first initialize a 2D-triangular mesh on the first image of the sequence. We distinguish different objects of interest by grouping together the triangles that make them up. Afterwards, we deform this mesh on the successive images in order to track each identified object. The tracking stage uses optical flow by adding a node relaxation step to avoid mesh deteriorations. The mesh deformations analysis provides access to motion information along the sequence. This technique is applied to a cine-MRI sequences of the heart and allows the analysis …
