Design of large scale sensors in 180 nm CMOS process modified for radiation tolerance
2019
International audience; The last couple of years have seen the development of Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (DMAPS) fabricated with a process modification to increase the radiation tolerance. Two large scale prototypes, Monopix with a column drain synchronous readout, and MALTA with a novel asynchronous architecture, have been fully tested and characterized both in the laboratory and in test beams. This showed that certain aspects have to be improved such as charge collection after irradiation and the output data rate. Some improvements resulting from extensive TCAD simulations were verified on a small test chip, Mini-MALTA. A detailed cluster analysis, using data from laboratory…
Search for particles with unexpected mass and charge in Z decays
1993
During 1989 and 1990 over 180 000 hadronic and leptonic events, corresponding to 8 pb-1 of luminosity, were collected by the ALEPH detector in a scan of the Z peak at the e+e- collider LEP. This letter reports the results of a search in these data for particles with unexpected mass and charge by measurement of the ionization energy loss of charged tracks in the ALEPH TPC central tracking detector. The mass limits for the pair production of fractionally charged particles and of heavy, long lived charged particles are extended to 43 GeV/c2 at 90% confidence level. If single production of a heavy particle is considered, the mass limit is extended to more than 70 GeV/c2. RI Perrier, Frederic/A-…
Search for exclusive decays of the Lambda_b baryon and measurement of its mass
1996
A search for fully reconstructed \lb beauty baryons is performed using about 3 million Z decays collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP. The analysis relies on the combined use of the accurate tracking and of the hadron identification capabilities of DELPHI. A total of four events has been found, three in the \lc\ppm channel and one in the \lc\a1m channel over a small background. The \lb beauty baryon mass is measured to be (~ 5668 \pm 16~ ({\rm stat.}) \pm 8~({\rm syst.})~)~ \mv.

Radiation hard monolithic CMOS sensors with small electrodes for High Luminosity LHC
2019
Abstract The upgrade of the tracking detectors for the High Luminosity-LHC (HL-LHC) requires the development of novel radiation hard silicon sensors. The development of Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors targets the replacement of hybrid pixel detectors with radiation hard monolithic CMOS sensors. We designed, manufactured and tested radiation hard monolithic CMOS sensors in the TowerJazz 180 nm CMOS imaging technology with small electrodes pixel designs. These designs can achieve pixel pitches well below current hybrid pixel sensors (typically 50 × 50 μ m ) for improved spatial resolution. Monolithic sensors in our design allow to reduce multiple scattering by thinning to a total si…
A New Three-Dimensional Track Fit with Multiple Scattering
2017
Modern semiconductor detectors allow for charged particle tracking with ever increasing position resolution. Due to the reduction of the spatial hit uncertainties, multiple Coulomb scattering in the detector layers becomes the dominant source for tracking uncertainties. In this case long distance effects can be ignored for the momentum measurement, and the track fit can consequently be formulated as a sum of independent fits to hit triplets. In this paper we present an analytical solution for a three-dimensional triplet(s) fit in a homogeneous magnetic field based on a multiple scattering model. Track fitting of hit triplets is performed using a linearization ansatz. The momentum resolution…

Evidence of octupole-phonons at high spin in 207Pb
2019
A lifetime measurement of the 19/2 state in Pb has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a Pb beam impinging on a Mo enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt γ rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. The measured large reduced transition probability B(E3,19/2→13/2)=40(8) W.u. is the first indication of the octupole phonon at high spin in Pb. An analysis in terms of a particle-octupole-vibration coupling model indicates that the measured B(E3) value in Pb is compa…
Conceptual design of the AGATA 1$\pi$ array at GANIL
2017
The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This setup exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy γ rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on sim…
On the performances of a particle tracking detector based on triangular scintillator bars read out by silicon photomultipliers
2020
Abstract A tracking detector composed of scintillator bars with a triangular cross-section read out by silicon photomultipliers in analog mode was developed. The tracker was designed to instrument a low density spectrometer for neutrino experiments. The performance of the system has been studied by exposing it to charged particle beams at the CERN-PS. The tests have shown that the position resolution in reconstructing charged particles’ tracks is within 2.2 mm over the momentum range 0.5–10 GeV/c.
