The interaction of codes in dubbing: wordplay and visual restrictions
2012
The following paper delves into the complex transfer of humour focusing on a recurring problem that appears when dubbing comedies: wordplay partially transmitted by image. It analyses the factors that have a bearing on translation and illustrates the various translation techniques with scenes from the Marx Brothers' filmography. Finally, it details the conclusions obtained from the analysis of the dubbing of 74 puns with visual restriction and its comparison with 116 cases where there is no such restriction.
Visual perception and audiovisual translation: directed vision
2012
This paper is based on the premise that “some of the basic skills needed to understand film and television are identical to those necessary for natural visual perception” (Grodal 1999: 76). Perception is an unconscious and natural way of interpreting our environment based on prior experience and learning. In contrast to the deeply rooted Western belief that image is universal and true, our argument is that visual perception is a cognitive process determined by prior experience, environment, context, cultural values and motivation. This paper analyzes the application of cognitive research on visual perception in audiovisual narrative strategies and its implications for the study of the audio…
Translating Transculturality: Mediation of Identity in John Rabe’s Diaries
2019
Along with people’s movement and technology, local and foreign components in language and culture become interconnected. Hence translation and cultural studies need approaches, beyond the national, to fuzzy linguistic and cultural forms. One such case originates from the Nanking Massacre, which occurred in the East Asian theatre of WWII. John Rabe, a businessman from Hamburg and a foreign resident in Nanking, was elected by the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone to be its chairman. His humanitarian efforts eventually won him a special cultural identity, «the Living Buddha». This article focuses on mediation of identity. It presents «translating transculturality» as a new re…
Interpretación social y accesibilidad. Una propuesta de conexión disciplinar
2020
Dubbing dialogues… naturally: a pragmatic approach to the translation of transition markers in dubbing
2012
Although research in Audiovisual Translation is said to have come of age in the past decade, there are still several key issues that have not received the scholarly attention they deserve. In the case of dubbing, the study of the naturalness of dubbed dialogue is a case in point. The aim of the present article is to analyse the use of transition markers in dubbing in order to look precisely at the naturalness of dubbed dialogue while taking into account the dubbing constraints at play. This analysis is carried out by comparing the dubbed dialogue (English-Spanish) of a popular American sitcom to the non-translated but prefabricated dialogue of a Spanish sitcom and finally to spontaneous con…
Analysis of documentary and terminological needs of doctors and medical translators as a basis for the development of a next-generation multilingual …
2014
The objective of this study is to develop a multilingual lexicographical resource aimed at doctors and medi…
The use of social surveys in translation studies: methodological characteristics
2010
This article is the English version of "El uso de la encuesta de tipo social en traductología: características metodológicas" by Anna Kuznik, Amparo Hurtado Albir & Anna Espinal Berenguer. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. Translation is an activity carried out by professionals – in some cases after a period of formal training – who are employed or self-employed, and whose work is destined for translation users. Translators, translator trainees, employers of translators, and translation users are four clearly defined social groups withi…
2013
The first part of this paper revisits the rationale for examining historical views on translation and offers examples of questions that can help researchers—particularly those new to the study of translation history—contextualize and evaluate historical writings on translation. The second part applies some of these questions to a study of the relatively unknown writings of Motoki Ryōei, an eighteenth-century Japanese translator of European scientific works, in an indirect attempt to demonstrate how such questions, although best combined with a more holistic framework, can help researchers delve beyond the obvious historical facts
Traduir sota la dictadura franquista, traduir clandestinament: Poesia (1944-1945) i Ariel (1946-1951)
2013
After the Spanish Civil War, Francisco Franco’s dictatorship banned Catalan translations for a decade. But in 1948, Carles Riba’s translation of the Odyssey and Josep Maria Sagarra’s translation of the Divine Comedy were published, albeit with severe restrictions. These restrictions remained virtually unchanged until 1962, when the regime began allowing the publication of Catalan translations without prior censorship. In the 1940s, when the repression was at its fiercest, two clandestine journals in Catalan, Poetry (1944-1945) and Ariel (1946-1951), regularly translated a portion of one of the classics of Western literature, and also published contemporary and avant-garde material as well a…
